My impression is that PC rules the UK airwaves. Spike Milligan died complaining that the Beeb refused to re-show the various Q series, and I can only think that they didn't like the 'Donald McGill' elements of the show. Similarly but on a lower plane, Benny Hill was taken off even though his show was still getting substantial ratings. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, having given up on them when they brought out Phantasmagoria but with Sensible back on board and having enjoyed last year's Grave Disorder I had hopes of a good show despite memories of the old Sensible era performances that where usually pretty messy occaisions. The Bierkeller was the same dark, low ceiling venue I remember from my younger days but the beer has gone downhill in the intervening years. Hop flavoured sodastream. The crowd was mostly 30 plus, as to be expected, and heavily biased towards punks with a few goths (including the three I went with, lured by Phantasmagoria/Patrica Morrison). I am happy to say they played a stunning set. The kicked off with Street of Dreams but that was the last we heard from the P album. The main set consisted of 5 tracks from Grave Disorder and a fine selection of furious rockers from my fave period of the Damned (MGE to Strawberries). After a quick performance of Happy Talk by Sensible and Monty they came back for the expected finale of Eloise,Love Song, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat (with a dodgy jam and Last train to Clarksville version) and an incredible Smash it Up. Rather than the feared sloppiness or tame retread of past glories the band produced an exhilarating noise, incredibly fast, tight and gloriously fun. I have never seen them so focused or producing so much energy. The frenzied scrum that covered the front half of the dance floor completely overwhelmed our friends who had had no idea what a "real" damned gig would be like and who also couldn't understand the game of Sensible baiting. Vanian looks more like Roy Orbison than ever, sang better than ever, and was in a jovial mood. Sensible stills plays a fearsome punk guitar, those old,old riffs somehow sounded fresh and more exciting than the records, also almost succeeded in a note for note copy of the solo from Under the Floor Again. Pinch, not much to say as I'm not a great judge of drummers and I couldn't really see him, powerful and with feeling which is good enough for me. I didn't miss Rat's "theatrics". Monty was a little low in the mix, a "bit of a nutter" in the dance moves. Patricia was splendid. I had been dubious coz of her goth image and had only heard her before with the Sister of Mercy "I'm to dark, deep and precious to Rock out". She belted out the bass riffs with passion and power, especially the really frantic stuff like Love Song, New Rose&c where she was at the front of the stage with a huge grin. Longer post than expected but it was the best gig I've seen for a long while (SBoys included I'm sorry to say) and they where my fave's when I was a teen. Witness how Dubya's righteous indignation and ability to render final judgments gives way to mealy-mouthed ambiguities before political (and pragmatic) realities: President Bush promised that both the SEC and the Justice Department would "fully investigate and hold people accountable" for what he called "outrageous" accounting methods that company executives disclosed Tuesday night. . . . Bush said: "There is a need for a renewed corporate responsibility in America. Those entrusted with shareholders' money must -- must -- strive for the highest of high standards." (George W. "All I can tell you is that in the corporate world, sometimes things aren't exactly black and white when it comes to accounting procedures," Bush said in defending Harken. . . . Bush, who appeared irritated by the questioning, glared at reporters in the White House briefing room when he heard titters after that answer. "There was an honest difference of opinion as to how to account for a complicated transaction," he said. "And you're going to find that in different corporations. Sometimes the rules aren't as specific as -- as one would expect, and therefore the accountants and the auditors make a decision." Bush said that some of the corporations suspected of wrongdoing could merely be victims of honest disagreements. "It could be," he said. "It's not my role to judge or the Congress's role to judge. It is the SEC's role to judge." (George W. Bush, speaking of the 1992 "honest disagreement" with the SEC over accounting practices at his former company that overstated company profits by treating as a cash gain a large asset sale financed by the company's loan to the buyer, July 8, 2002 at a White House news conference: July 9, 2002 Washington Post at A-1). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 09:18:41 -0800 From: noe shalev Subject: Re[2]: reap unce upon a time, Monday, July 8, 2002, glen typed this: glen uber> Bachman, earnestly scribbled: >>Hank was one of the greatest >>Jewish athletes of all time, along with Sandy Koufax. glen uber> This would be a great off-list topic for anyone who cares to continue it glen uber> (I know I would). glen uber> I know of only two Jewish athletes playing today: Shawn Green of the Los glen uber> Angeles Dodgers and Josh Taves of the Oakland Raiders. As you are all probably aware, Robyn is playing two nights at the Edinburgh Festival fringe this year - Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th August. The thing is, he's playing two shows per night... 18:25 to 19:25 and 20:00 to 21:00. Tickets are #9.00 for _each_ show. We're already booked up for something else on the Tuesday, so I am now looking at the two Monday shows and wondering whether to go to both. Now, I'm sure some of you are thinking "You lucky *******! Two chances to see Hitchcock in one day - and you're wondering whether to miss one?!" Thing is, the tickets aren't cheap, and if you've ever been to Edinburgh in August, you'll know that there will be a large number of other things happening that are also worth seeing. My question therefore is... will Robyn play two completely different sets, or are they likely to have some material in common, or be largely the same, or a rehash with a few changes? My initial thoughts are that they will be completely different, but if anyone has any experience of RH playing 2 sets in a day, or even insider knowledge as to how he is approaching this, then I'd be most grateful.
