It's understandable that there'd be a soundtrack release for this movie, given the centrality of music to its plot and the general quality of the performers (not to mention the composers!) - but in some cases, the existence of a soundtrack CD for a movie just has me scratching my head. For example, last night we rented _The Man Who Wasn't There_. In the previews on the videotape, there was an ad for the soundtrack CD. And I'm thinking, "okay, there's the Beethoven sonatas Birdy plays endlessly, there's that dance song from the party at Nirdlinger's, one or two background songs...and maybe one recognizable Carter Burwell theme..." Who the hell would buy that? All of it (except the nondescript Burwell) is readily available elsewhere, there seems little to recommend putting all those things together on one CD (other than that they're all in this movie)...'tis a mystery. And yet no label wanted to release Jon Brion's _Meaningless_. Go figure... Once again, the mysterious ways of record industry accountants have me thoroughly befuddled. - --Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::In terms of the conjunctures of cultures, [LA is] less like a salad bowl ::and more like a TV dinner with those little aluminium barriers keeping ::all the vegetables in their places. __Catherine Ann Driscoll__ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 May 2002 10:55:14 -0400 (EDT) From: Jill Brand Subject: Biff Rose Jeff wrote in response to my Biff Rose question: "I was intrigued by it - I think it had some strange word in the title...and wasn't he mentioned in the liner notes to a Bowie album? He had this niche following in NYC in the late 60s, and he even did the late night circuit a bit (I begged my parents to let me stay up and watch him on Carson). Anyway, he had this heart-wrenchingly beautiful song called Molly (remembrance of old love) that I found myself singing all last week, possibly because of the discussions of heart-wrenching Robyn songs. I couldn't get it out of my head...so I ambled over to google to see if anyone else in the world had fond memories as well. I thought that Robert Carlyle walked away with that film. The only other thing I've seen EmcG in is 'Brassed Off', where he was pleasant if anonymous. Surprisingly, Stephen Tompkinson was good in 'Brassed Off' - but I wish he'd go back to being the dud overseas correspondent in 'Dead Donkey'. I liked that show until Haydn Gwynne left, then it suddenly turned into a soap opera. - - MRG PS Saw an interview with Gerry Anderson on breakfast TV a couple of weeks ago. The production is better than on "The Spirit Cage" (which I also like, by the way) -- but still not quite like the "Greatest Living Englishman". Andy P. definitely helped make GLE a fantastic album, but I've been quite happy with the Off-White Album and the newer stuff. I personally don't have a problem with any minor self-plagiarism (hey -- I'm a Ray Davies fan, too!), and I don't get the same feeling you do about his Englishness - - I don't think he's trying to call attention to it -- he just is what he is and does what he does, and whoever likes it likes it, and whoever doesn't, doesn't. He's not trying to be more or less than what he is -- I find it refreshing.
