Should I add my TBS records > to > the uncool list? : ) I think it depends on who you ask. My impression is that any group with Paul Heaton at the helm is likely to be considered a bit MOR by the folks across the pond, and I think you have to admit that however cutting the lyrics get the music is still pretty tame. My girlfriend likes them a lot, though. I think they're pretty listenable myself, and very good to sing along with. > I know most people > think the top 40 music of the 70's to be pure crap but I love it because > it's what I heard all the time during my childhood and I associate the > songs with so many memories. I feel the same way about the top 40 music of the first half of the 80s. Such a magical time for pop culture -- so disposable and yet so inventive. Or maybe it just seemed that way to an eight- year-old (and to Sebastian, I see, reading ahead in the digest). > Ninety percent of the time, I also consider the first record I owned > from > an artist/group to be my favourite of their catalog. I do this a lot, but not always. The sure thing is that I overestimate it for sentimental reasons, but this doesn't always make it my favorite. Depends how good the others are. > From: "May Apple" > Their coolest VU record is my least favorite. It's the least listenable, certainly. I thought "The Gift" was fun the first time I heard it but I always skip it now, and I've never understood why "Sister Ray" is supposed to be so amazing. I guess I have a tin ear for the avant-garde. However, the title track is one of my favorite VU songs. > Drew, Taylor put out alot of pop crap that was horribly overplayed, but, > inmho, he also made some good music. The horror I have for him emanates somehow from the man (or his musical persona) itself, and the quality of the songs is almost secondary. I don't mean for you or anyone else to take it personally, and I'm sorry I brought it up because now I keep having to think about him. > Oh, and Drew, I finially rented "Rushmore." I liked the characters and the setting of Rushmore, and I wished they'd had different relationships and a different plot. I'd rather listen to James Taylor than read fan fiction, but -- hmmm. He had lots of his own songs with titles like "Coca Cola is the drink of the death squads" and also sang an old Phil Ochs tune. Quite took me back to the days when Tom Paxton used to tour the UK (whatever happened to...?) Mick Thomas used to have a band called 'Weddings Parties Anything' who had an Oz hit with 'Father's Day'. I thought he was good, but my wife's friends dismissed him as typical boring male angst. Anyone else heard of him (Dave?). Attila was good - everyone enjoyed 'Libyan students from Hell' - but he shows worrying signs of mellowing - he included a love song(!) amongst all the rants about Murdoch, supermodels, Crystal Palace FC and Coldplay. What's uncool to a Kwakiutl might be cool to a Yanamamo. Particularly, there's the problem of "classic" rock. What are we to do w/ Cream? Led Zep, the Moody Blues, lots of others are similar. Or CSN -- I mean David Crosby is ultra-cool in some contexts, but w/ just the whiney Brit, no. I guess a lot of it comes from the Baby Boomers monopolizing the airwaves. So I'll try to give samples of my uncool that I think either Rolling Stone or people I really respect would find uncool. Shall I open up the wound and let the puss flow? If yes, can the jpegs (or however it is being done) be sent to branches (and then to leaves). I don't have a scanner, so I can't duplicate some of the beautiful cover work that you all generate. (late reply) Sebastian mentioned DivX Doctor II 2.1, but if you're using OS 9, it might not work. I've had some luck with an older version -- actually, an older program called DivX Player, which includes an earlier version of DivX Doctor. It successfully doctors AVIs about three-quarters of the time, with occasional glitches even in the successes. It's also a time-limited demo, so you now have to change your system date to use it. I've recently been on a kick of > re-creating my record collection as a teenager, In recent years I've been getting into music that was popular when I was a teenager, but which I hated with the white-hot self-righteous hatred of a teenage boy who never got laid. This means I now like a little synthpop, and I've even developed a sneaking affection for hair metal. Meanwhile, I can't think of the last time I played MDC and Minor Threat.... Speaking of hair metal, a few years ago a friend of mine named Vinu became a big hair metal freak. He even rented the top floor of a local bar and hosted an all-hair-metal party, which he DJ'd himself from his extensive collection. It was a lot of fun. Vinu, BTW, was about ten years old when Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister were in their heyday. - --Chris ______________________________________________________________________ Christopher Gross On the Internet, nobody knows I'm a dog. chrisg@gwu.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 23:11:20 -0400 From: rosso@videotron.ca Subject: Re: I dig everything (cool v. un-) On 13 May 2002, at 14:28, Christopher Gross wrote: > Uncool albums, eh? This is as good an opportunity as any to express my perplexity at the recent trend to canonise or at least beatify some old acts that sucked, suck, and will continue to suck. What's the deal with recent expressions of reverence by credible musicians for: Abba Kiss The Carpenters ??? Is there a huge wink here that I'm missing?
