After hitting TERRIBLE traffic, we managed to get to the theater only 5 minutes late and experienced the best family outing I've had in a while. My Mother's Day present, I suppose. The show is great, and it was nice that I didn't already have a bootleg of the concert because I got to be surprised. It was fun to see Robyn having such a good time. There is even an audience sing-along for Uncorrected Personality Traits. I loved Antwoman. Great Johnny Cash imitations. No audience shots, however, so I didn't get to see the west coast crew. My kids thought it was great (both started singing along to UPT, but they didn't need the lyrics); my daughter asked if there were any Robyn CDs in the car on the way home. It was nice to see Harold and Woj and crew. We made up most of the audience (there couldn't have been more than 20 people there, no?). I'm still grinning. Yeah, Max, Robyn started off kind of rough at the beginning on Craig Kilborn (thanks to Harold for informing me that this is not a Canadian show and that I could receive it at my house - the only thing on TV that I am sure about is Spongebob). It's great to play really loud - thus annoying your neighbors. Now if you had "Crises" on the list, I could possibly understand that. I'm sure my explanation for having records that critics would consider unworthy is that I establish emotional ties with my music. I can hear a song and it will fill me with memories and emotions from when I first heard it or when I used to listen to it a lot or how the song was shared with someone else. When I hear Pink Floyd's "Money", it reminds me of summertime and sunshine. When I was a kid, we'd go to the pool and this song must have been in the top 40 because it was always on the radio loudspeaker. I know most people think the top 40 music of the 70's to be pure crap but I love it because it's what I heard all the time during my childhood and I associate the songs with so many memories. Ninety percent of the time, I also consider the first record I owned from an artist/group to be my favourite of their catalog. Not sure if this is true for any of you. I guess it's because I bought the record because a song struck an emotional chord with me or maybe because being the first of a catalog, it got played the most - repetition makes the songs grow fonder. Oh, and I missed Robyn on CK last night - although I did get to hear some fegs do karaoke. The highlight of the evening was our friend Tammy doing "Baby Got Back" - definitely a crowd pleaser. s.Mary np - GbV - "Under the Bushes, Under the Stars" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 May 2002 17:11:26 +0200 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Re: bloody emotions (0.1%RH) - -- mary is rumored to have mumbled on Samstag, 11. If RS thinks your even in the vicenity of cool --well, it time to fall on your sword. So I took solace from this. Their coolest VU record is my least favorite. Where is early Buffallo Springfield or Byrds? Miles "In a Silient Way"? Theres other stuff I prefer. QMS was one of those bands RS always had a hard-on for, and no one ever knew why. And I agree with Ross about the quality of Taylor's guitar work. Drew, Taylor put out alot of pop crap that was horribly overplayed, but, inmho, he also made some good music. I would love to be able to refind a copy of his very first record, the one that came out on Apple. Oh, and Drew, I finially rented "Rushmore." I liked it, but didnt love it(Sorry Nat) the way I loved "The Royal Tannanbaums," perhaps due to the lack of an easily-identifiable-with female figure. However, love whoever chooses the music to these movies. Now I've had Bete Noire on cassette for ages, and I can't believe I never looked more closely at the liner notes or listened more closely to the songs, because actually half of them sound like mid-to-late-eighties Madonna. And why? Well, naturally, because Patrick Leonard co-wrote them with Ferry. Duh. I feel so silly for not seeing it before, but now when I listen to the songs it's inescapable. Not unpleasant, mind you -- I always liked Pat Leonard's songs for Madonna. Adding to the fun is the fact that while I always knew who "Marr" was, I didn't realize until maybe two or three years ago that "The Right Stuff" was actually an instrumental called "Money Changes Everything" for the Smiths. If he gets up there and sings a Dylan song what exactly has he proven? Also, he's got a label to please with the Soft Boys album and in all likelihood the label got him the gig. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't this his first US TV performance since "I Something You" on Conan many years ago? I thought he really put his best foot forward this time, and I'm not just talking about his stance while he sang (I gather the mic was set up a little too low?). I was somewhat annoyed but as a sports fan I enjoyed the bit. Kilborn was clearly no match for "Ed" as an actor though, and he brought the bit to a halt every time he spoke. leftover thoughts: * In the wake of Spidermania, has anyone dug out their copy of that first Katrina & The Waves album? "Spiderman" was one of my favorite tracks on that album way back when. * Journey had some actual merit before Steve Perry arrived. They were basically Santana without Carlos...a good tight prog/fusion unit. The first couple of albums were very good if you're into that sort of thing. If ever there was a band that sold it's soul... * I gotta go mow my lawn now. - -rUss ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 May 2002 18:38:10 -0500 (CDT) From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: Re: Craigers/Kilby On Sat, 11 May 2002, Russ Reynolds wrote: > > Did anyone else think it odd that The Soft Boys CD was promoted instead of > > Robyn Sings? He's been playing this live for almost two years, and that's the third different way I've heard it; the faster, percussive acoustic version (unfinished, from the 7/16/00 show), the full-band, slower SB's live version from last year's tour, or this one with Jon.
