I must say I am partial to Neal's early, Slingerland days, but I haven't listened that much to his new DW setup (single bass drum, fewer toms, holding his snare stick the old-fashioned way). I do have a copy of his instructional video. Also, I have never liked his choice of Zildjian for cymbals; even though he uses them well, I find them rather flat and colorless. Sure, his use of the China crash is notable, and there's no denying the beauty of his beloved, well-worn ride cymbal, but for splashes, he needs to brighten it up a bit. He's used several types of drums, why doesn't he give Paiste or Sabian a try sometime? I am also not one of those "Neal is God" types. I just like drums. I enjoy Ed Blackwell, Elvin Jones, Phil Rudd, Alex Van Halen (Ludwig and Paiste, the True Rock Drum Kit), Morris Windsor, Paul Lovans, and so on. Oh, and btw, Peart rhymes with "heart," not "hurt." > b) Gene has been drinking coffee and playing the videos nonstop for the last > two months getting psyched for the new release Close. But I have been tweaking my home stereo, using the Rush Remaster CDs as some of my reference recordings (f'rinstance, the soundstaging at the beginning of "Xanadu" is quite good, and "Jacob's Ladder" is good for testing bass and dynamics). I do plan a special Vapor Trails night -- lights off, no distractions, a good Cabernet -- when I finally get the CD. And yes, I have been considering buying an HDCD-capable CD player just for this new Rush album. > who noticed that if you look in Nick's fegphotos pages, Gene is always > standing in the background with a beer in his hand...clearly a man not to be > trifled with. Well, it is a *popular* poll, and whatever flaws their are with critics polls, these sorta things are always going to have more chart-topping-balladry crapola. That being said, the fact that so many Beatles songs made it (I'd guess in part because of the success of _1_ keeping them fresh in the public's mind) strikes me as a heartening thing. Lennon, R.E.M., Nirvana, Prince by way of Sinead, and U2 are also solid if unsurprising choices. Drop the bottom ten, and you've got 20 songs that I really wouldn't mind listening to myself (though given the preponderance of ballads, not in one sitting). And you really hadn't heard ten of these? The only ones I haven't heard are the songs by Steps, Melanie C., and All Saints. Oops...I don't know my line! Am I the defender of ambiguity or its prosecutor? Personally, I think the key is "time will destroy you," and whether it's "like a Mexican god would" or "was" makes very little difference to me. As for "evil I" / "evil eye," well, the lyric sheet says "I" but the phrasing (at least on CD) says "eye." I think it's more interesting as "I," because it makes you wonder who the others the speaker wished this evil on are (and 10 out 10 for syntax, thank you very much). I agree with Quail that the song is metaphorical and personal. To me it's the less direct and more aesthetic flipside of "I Wish I Liked You," and might be about the same person. My choir director in high school loved James Taylor *retch* and we sang at least one of his (Taylor's) shitty songs while I was there. He also liked that "Naturally" song by Huey Lewis and the Motherfucking News and we sang that in Vocal Jazz (wa-dup, wa-dup, wa- wa- wa-dup, over and over and over). What made all this ten times worse was that the adorable boy I had a crush on for much of high school also loved these "artists" and songs. Argggggggh.
