Rev. Richard Ross, pastor of St. Bernard's Church in Joliet, released a statement saying, "There is no adequate way for me to express my intense sorrow for the irreparable harm I have caused by my comments recently reported in the media and especially for the harm to all victims of abuse and their families who have suffered so much in the past and who may never heal. ... My comments were inexcusable!" In a story published by the Joliet Herald-News on Wednesday, Ross said, "I don't have much sympathy for people who somehow couldn't stop whatever happened. I'll take all of these people who were abused, and I'll abuse them with a baseball bat. You can quote me on that." Ross said in his apology that he believed the conversation was off the record. Ross' comments came in reaction to the news that his brother, Rev. Anthony J. Ross, is accused of sexually abusing a teenage boy in the Joliet Diocese in the early 1980s. Anthony Ross has been a priest in the Diocese of Santa Rosa, Calif., since 1993. He remains on active duty ministering to inmates there. He has not done parish work since leaving the Chicago area. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 16:22:13 -0000 From: Subject: Eno alert, current film version ...in the middle of _Y Tu Mama Tambien_, as Julio, Tenoch, and Luisa drive through a rural Mexican town, "By This River" begins playing for a good half- minute. It's then revealed that the characters are, as part of the narrative, listening to the song inside the car, as the music begins to stutter and fade: "Dude, don't! This song rules!" "The batteries died. Let's listen to the radio." The movie's really good, by the way -- very well cast, loose, funny, and makes its political points without being heavyhanded. Also, for no clear reason (however welcome), Zappa's "Watermelon in Easter Hay" plays over the ending credit crawl. I have a lot of views of the subject ... but what seems to be overlooked (please don't flame me) on the list are the serious global consequences. Could the situation there start World War III? Maybe it's because I'm from Quebic, where a battle over language and heritage has been raging since the French and British landed in Canada ... a battle I don't see an end to ... ever. The desires of many residents of Quebic will always be to separate from the rest of Canada. (imho) And *that's* come down to 'war' more than once. Perhaps the most memorable event would also be the most terrifying for Canadians and the Government leaders, the FLQ Crisis. ..................................................... The 'Front de Libiration du Quebic' were (and still are) a group of self-proclaimed terrorists. Their 'manifesto' called for non-democratic separation of Quebec from Canada, and it was to be brought about by acts of terror. (sound familiar?) The FLQ were determined it was time to take matters into their own hands, to rid French Canada of an oppressive system of British rule. From 1963 to 1967, the FLQ planted 35 bombs; from 1968 to 1970 they planted over 50 bombs. By the fall of 1970 the terrorist acts of the FLQ cells had claimed 6 lives. Then came the 'October crisis' (in 1970) when the FLQ kidnapped a British Trade Commissioner and an acclaimed writer who was both the Vice-Premier of Quebic and Minister of Immigration and Labour. Trudeau ... our Prime Minister at the time ... invoked the War Measures Act ... which meant the suspension of Canadian civil liberties. The army and their tanks and weapons marched into the streets of Ottawa, Ontario and Montrial, Quebic. At the time, the government were afraid of 'civil' war. Oh ~ The British Trade Commissioner, James Cross, was held for 60 days and freed by the police. The Vice Premier and Minister of Immigration & Labour; Pierre Laporte, was found stuffed in the trunk of a green Chevrolet. And we have had, and arguably still do, have terrorists in Quebic. ..................................................... Sorry, I didn't mean to go on but it is really a huge long story, as it is in the Middle East. I regularly get blasted by my Jewish family for my views on the war. So I've learned to keep my mouth shut. But sometimes I think, when it comes to Quebic, just separate and be done with it. Sadly, when I think of the Middle East, I wish an iceberg could change the geography of the situation. Why does it have to be in the middle of everything? Does anyone think it's really truly going to end? ... More Robyn ... I believe Ross T. mentioned something about if we knew if Robyn was left handed. You know, I'm left-handed and I can't believe had to think about it but as far as I remember Robyn's right handed. I remember talking to him and I actually expressed my amazement to him after he signed an autograph for someone. For the record left / right handedness makes no difference to Robyn :-} He does wear his watch on his right hand, as I do, I think that's a lefty thing ... but Robyn might do it out of convenience. Jill and Kay mentioned Robyn wearing his wedding band on his right hand. That *is* just a normal European thing. And Evelyn, shame ;-} Robyn's not a coke addict, he was an alcoholic, but not coke ... anyway he'd grow his pinky not his thumbnail n'est pas? Steve T. asked about Robyn's kids. Robyn is one of three and he made one. Now, what about Robyn's book?
