Maybe it's a rights questions -- after all, the did release a BTVS "Soundtrack" CD -- but, from what I can tell, it's incidental music plus songs by bands that played at the Bronze (uniformly crappy music, with the exception of Japanese Pop Masters Cibo Matto -- who actually appeared on an episode playing live). ============================================================================This e-mail message and any attached files are confidential and are intended solely for the use of the addressee(s) named above. Alright, I know there are other listservs devoted to Buffy (probably several), but it bears noting to a wider audience that this "musical" episode was simply superb. (note: every other episode of this season, save perhaps one, has made Perot's "giant sucking sound" seem like a dustbuster, so you know I'm not some die-hard-Buffy-can-do-no-wrong-fan-boy. [although, I second the thumbs up on Willow. wait, that's sounds considerably worse than's Eugene's comment, doesn't it?]. If you like musicals, you'll find this one to be a competent effort. If you don't, you'll find this episode to be a hilarious satire (supposedly some dark magic is causing everyone to burst into song, rhapsodizing the excellent work of their dry cleaners) that nevertheless works on its own terms. On top of that, it actually moves the plot of the show along significantly. But, no, there is no DVD and no soundtrack album. They are releasing whole seasons of the show on boxed set DVDs (the US only has the first season; I think the UK is up to season three or four by now), so it will eventually find its way to DVD. ============================================================================This e-mail message and any attached files are confidential and are intended solely for the use of the addressee(s) named above. No. They're merely recorded from the TV. It would be nice for there to be an official soundtrack, and in fact, the official Buffy site had a poll up asking people whether or not they'd buy one - but I suspect its audience isn't quite big enough to justify a solo release. Certainly, I'm hoping the DVD will at least contain clean recordings of the songs (i.e., free of any background sounds, dialogue, cuts), particularly for "I'm Under Your Spell," which in context got roughly cut off at the scene change (made sense in dramatic context, but musically unfortunate). I won't go as far as to say everything else this season's sucked - the memory-loss episode was quite fun, to name one - but overall, yeah, it's been pretty disappointing. The degree of sulk and floundering about has been excruciating - not to mention a couple of way-overdrawn-out plot strands (Xander & Anya's wedding - how long ago was I really tired of any that?). Still, nearly every episode contains at least ten minutes, if only in scattered shots, that's better than 90% of the rest of TV. (Oh yeah: since a couple of you have mentioned it offlist, I thought I'd point out that I've finally updated my music review site - URL below. I might be willing to add the invisibility one, for a similar reason -- for much of the episode, Buffy (and thus the audience) was free of the iron-clad chains of depression and malaise that has plagued this season. I mean, it's one thing to recognize that life isn't all fun and games, and that the characters have to grow up sometime, but why jettison the formula (or ambiance or style or whathaveyou) that attracted your audience in the first place? Why abandon the escapist fun that was your forte and subject your core audience to an everlasting bummer (when we have enough real-life anxieties to keep us occupied, thank you very much). A friend of mine who had access to some spoiler-type inside info on the rest of the season tried to tell me what's coming (but I never want to know that kind of thing), but he insisted on telling me that the tone of the show would not be brightening any time soon -- indeed, it will get darker before any hint of light is revealed. great, just what I needed to hear. >::playing around with the decentered self is all fun and games >::until somebody loses an I. heh. intellectual pun-iness, I love it. reminds me of the university of chicago (my alma mater), where everyone and their brother tended towards the geeky (though bright and interesting) and making Thucydides or Foucault jokes was par for the course. ("Q: How many deconstructionists does it take to screw in a light bulb? A: Why are you asking me? I can claim no objective truth in the matter." heh. I just made that up, but I think I'll be using it again). My former roommate there also claimed, early on freshman year, that his Mom always used to say "Well, it's not a party until someone gets crucified." He later admitted that she never had said any such thing. Henceforth, our group of friends frequently was heard to say "As Adam's mother never said..." ============================================================================This e-mail message and any attached files are confidential and are intended solely for the use of the addressee(s) named above. Bastards. First -- According to Joss Whedon, Fox (the makers though not the broadcasters of Buffy) have definitely decided to release a CD from the musical CD. However, being Fox, they're just taking their sweet time to do so. Next ... I nabbed a pretty good quality MPEG of the entire musical ep from the old Morpheus. However, I don't have a CD burner on this computer, and since the file is almost 600 MB, I can't transfer it to another computer on a Zip disk. Can I use an FTP program to transfer it over the Internet to someone else's computer (I mean an ordinary user's computer, not a server)? Or can I somehow use Morpheus to transfer it to a particular user, instead of throwing it open to the whole world on a first-come-first-served basis? (I also have a low-quality copy of the musical as a 60 MB Quicktime movie. The picture's grainy and the sound is flat, but at least I can take it home with me.) Finally, I want to offer an opposing viewpoint to the negative opinions we've heard about this season of Buffy. I too have found it a bit disappointing, but it hasn't been THAT bad. In fact, I think the first third of the season, up through "Tabula Rasa" (the one after the musical), were comparable to any previous season. A decline set in with the next ep, "Smashed," but IMHO opinion it still been at least tolerable. (However, I don't agree that "Gone," the invisibility episode, was one of the better recent eps. Instead, I'd pick "Doublemeat Palace" and "Normal Again," the last new episode.) Mind you, I don't deny this season has had problems. The biggest ones in recent episodes are a general lack of direction and a marked increase of script sloppiness -- more weak jokes (like invisible Buffy's pranks), more unconvincing plot developments (the whole "magic addiction is just like heroin adiction" thing), and more continuity errors. (Note that these flaws weren't much in evidence before "Smashed." Hopefully they'll go away again!) On the other hand, I personally don't mind the increased gloominess, and I did find the Buffy-Spike and Xander-Anya plot lines interesting. And of course the musical episode was brilliant -- probably among the top 5 episodes ever, not that I'm one to make such lists.... So there, now you have the opposing viewpoint. - --Chris "Bunnies! Actually, an awful lot of people say that very same thing. And especially since SMG has been looking pretty gaunt lately. I wonder if that's deliberately intended to indicate Buffy the character's state, or if Sarah the actress became gaunt for unrelated reasons. I just want to sit her down and feed her a couple of milkshakes before she turns into Callista Flockhart. (And then maybe she'd break up with Freddie and marry me, her savior. Ahhh....) Meanwhile, I really hope Alyson gets a decent movie role soon. I'm sure American Pie I and II made her a fortune, but, well ... bleah! She needs to appear in something at least *slightly* artistic.
