No response, of >course. Mortifying. What happened at this Kristin Hersh show was that this girl was screaming "Kristin, I love you!" and Kristin smiled and said "Thank you!" Then the girl screamed, "The Throwing Muses were my life!" and Kristin responded sadly, "They were my life, too. And now I'm here." (This was very shortly after the Muses officially broke up.) I actually have this on tape somewhere... >I didn't think >much of the second album (and never bought it); Sky Motel >had some moments on it but was ultimately texture rather >than substance. Sunny Border Blue is hard to listen to but >it does seem to be moving in a catchier direction again. "Strange Angels" is OK - there's some good songs on it, like "Gazebo Tree." I reviewed "Sky Motel" for WCBN and was sufficiently underwhelmed that I didn't buy it. "Sunny Border Blue" is stronger, but has a sort of bland flavor to it. I actually haven't managed to listen to it all the way through, but I don't have the heart to sell it. I saw her perform some of the songs live and they were better than on the album. >The first one I heard was The Real Ramona, >and I still love it, along with Red Heaven. I kind of lost >interest in Muses records after that... Yeah, me too. I didn't buy "Red Heaven," though - maybe I should pick it up some time. I do like the fact that Gilbert Hernandez did the cover for "Limbo." (Hey, here's a stupid thread - what comic book artists have done covers for albums? I can think of Los Bros Hernandez, Dan Clowes, and Jim Woodring right off the bat. Any others? I'm sure Peter Bagge must have done one.) > > Spike Milligan. > >oh man! The Last Of The Goons -- goon. NOOOOOO!!!!! (falls to the ground in a fit) And now, Spike Milligan's "Return to Sorrento (Third Class)": I must go down to the sea again To the lonely sea and sky I left my vest and socks there I wonder if they're dry? >It recently occurred to me that whenever I put in Quasi's CD >"Featuring >Birds" I listen to it over and over and over until it >occurs to me that >I've been listening to it over and over and should >consider listening to >one of my 850 other CDs. Oh my god! It's not just me! I'm not alone! >And that big crunchy organ? Boy howdy that's good stuff. It's a roxichord - some sort of vintage keyboard that Sam Coomes bought in a pawnshop for $50. He abused it so much on tour that it broke, and now he has a synthesizer that makes similar sounds. (I've done my research, baby!) >I have only one Quasi record, but what about his other stuff -- his >work >with Elliot Smith in Heatmiser, and his other Quasi CDs? I was just listening to their first album, "R&B Transmogrification" (sp?) today, which is pretty similar to "Featuring Birds" but less sophisticated - the lyrics aren't as good, and the production is kind of muddy, but if you like that big roxichord sound, then it's for you. "Field Studies" is OK, but the more elaborate arrangements (strings, etc.) tend to drag everything down. I haven't heard their latest, "The Sword of God," nor have I heard Heatmiser, or the Donner Party, for that matter. I was just pondering this morning. If Mates of State and Quasi got in a fight, then Quasi would certainly win. But what if Quasi got in a fight with the White Stripes? Janet Weiss would kick Meg White's ass, but Jack White and Sam Coomes may be evenly matched. This is what you think about when you don't have a TV. n., who once stood behind Janet Weiss at a Black Heart Procession show, but has not yet encountered Sam Coomes _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Feb 2002 09:39:16 -0800 From: drew Subject: five classical muses > From: "Snow Drop" > > Hmm, even thou I am currently undergoing a momentary Sebastian and > Belle(is > it just me, or is there a Smiths-twisted- about-in-different-directions > thing going on there?) Oh, absolutely -- as much emphasis on the "different directions" as "Smiths," I would say. The influence is clear and huge (right down to the album covers) but some elements are definitely skewed. > So -- could anyone supply 5 Throwing Muses song titles that will knock > my > socks n buskins off? Man, picking five would be hard, and especially five stunners, since the effect is almost more cumulative than anything else. I'll reel off a few I'd put on a "welcome to the Muses" mix. Note first of all that a real Muses fan (which I guess I'm not) would be choosing from the first two albums (eponymous and House Tornado), which I don't like but I do recognize as being less pop-oriented and more interesting to people who don't like catchy songs. "Hate My Way" is supposed to be a classic, and I kind of like "Mexican Women" (hi honey!). I'd definitely pick "Dizzy," just to show you how commercial the band could be when they tried; though I gather it's not one of Hersh's favorites for just that reason, it's a pretty stirring little pop song. I'd also choose "Counting Backwards," my introduction to the band thanks to Dave Kendall. After that it gets harder. I've always liked "Pearl" from Red Heaven, and the duet with Bob Mould on that album ("Dio") is pretty great -- he sounds terrific singing with Hersh. The Real Ramona almost has to work as a whole, but "Golden Thing," "Say Goodbye," and Tanya's "Not Too Soon" are all amazing. From Hunkpapa I might throw in "Dragonhead" or "Fall Down." So that's more than five, but it covers a lot of ground. I don't know the post-Red Heaven albums at all, but of the three I know and love I'd say that Hunkpapa is more college-rocky, Red Heaven is more raw rock (Tanya had left, so there's no more sweetness) and it's all got a bit of a Mouldish sound to it, actually, and The Real Ramona is bright-edged chaos, a real mixture from light pop to thundering mania to languid dreaminess. Of the three I like The Real Ramona best overall; I started there and you could too. Though I DO know it's the title of a Robyn Hitchcock CD. Is it a kind of ridiculous word related to Beatlemania? Actually I'm picking up all your references to music like Throwing Muses. I like the idea that there's a place where excellent music is recognized even though it's out of the mainstream. Back in the 80's I used to follow a London, Ontario group called Suffer Machine. They were amazing but somehow it never translated well into any recordings. Somehow the energy and passion was lost. So they are not famous. Very much a performance/dance band. There were many of us faithful fans who trailed around after them to all their gigs and danced like pagans. They made it onto an indie movie soundtrack, "Roadkill" but I wouldn't recommend it. Not worth listening to unfortunately. What I'm figuring out is that the producers of recordings have a LOT to do with capturing the spirit of the music... This is just a quick heads-up to remind you about the FISH GLOSS 2-disc set that is being hand-made in a singular run of 30 units - this is available to those who buy two or more GLASS FLESH discs - for example, two of the new GLASS FLESH 2 cd's, or if you prefer, one of the new ones and one of the original album, GLASS FLESH. The price is $25 and that includes two GLASS FLESHes, the 2-disc FISH GLOSS and parcel postage. What a deal! Regarding FISH GLOSS, I have received much positive feedback.
