One For The Road is also a great live album. - -Ken ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 09:38:07 -0500 (EST) From: dmw Subject: Re: I think I like the Kinks On Sat, 9 Feb 2002, Ken Weingold wrote: > > Are their other releases from that time in their career this good? I'll vouch for "are the Village Green Preservation Society" and "Muswell Hillbillies," but you can probably leave "Schoolboys in Disgrace" until you decide you're a fanatic. I also really, really love '79's _Give the People What they Want_, a tough, nasty record with some beautiful songs -- it's very "rawk" for the Kinks. But it's also somewhat of a dark horse choice. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 10:04:08 -0600 From: "Gene Hopstetter, Jr." Subject: Do you work at UTSA? All you non-Texan Fegs can ignore this post . A few weeks ago I began a new job at UTSA -- the University of Texas at San Antonio. Last night a Web Designer/Usability friend of mine, Baron, told me he met a woman who works at UTSA who does Web design and so on, and Baron mentioned me to her, and she seemed to recall having heard my name before and that I was a Robyn fan. Well, that's me. Is that woman you? If so, drop me a line! I'd love to discuss things Feg, Web, and UTSA with you. It seems we're both involved in the same sorta thing at UTSA. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 10:08:39 -0600 From: "Gene Hopstetter, Jr." Subject: The Kinks police never sleeps Wow. Very soon after my post about the Kinks, I received three messages offlist praising the Kinks and their fabulous body of work. Thanks, folks. I have much new music to discover. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 11:14:37 -0500 (EST) From: Jill Brand Subject: Gene asked "Are their other releases from that time in their career this good? I just might need to pick up some more Kinks LPs." I FEEL LIKE A FUCKING MOONY GOING IN FOR THE KILL!!!!!!!!!!! Deep breath. In out. OK, Gene, this is what you need Face to Face (the album before Something Else) (The Kinks are) the Village Green Preservation Society Arthur Lola vs. Powerman and the Money-go-round Those five albums (including Something Else) are, to me, what the Kinks were all about when they were simply the best band in the world. They've put out a lot of crap since 1985 (and moderate amounts of crap since 1977), but no one can top this stuff IMHO. I'm feeling somewhat fragile at the moment. Please no one write in about how the Kinks were crap. Oh, and as for the British band quiz thing, I ended up as Travis on purpose. I just acted wide-eyed and gracious on the questions and figured it would get me there. I don't care how derivative they are. They make me smile. I've long said that no-one has put out 5 consecutive albums that could top the Kinks Face to Face - Something Else - VGPS - Arthur - Lola v Powerman run. The Beatles could match it, Dylan could match it, but the Kinks can stand tall with the best. And for my money, VGPS is the best of the lot - but it's a tough choice. Muswell Hillbillies (the first album after Lola, except possibly for the negligible Percy soundtrack) started the long slow downward spiral. Both fantastic records particularly Village. Be sure and get the latest cd versions with all the bonus tracks and stereo/mono mixes. There seem to be quite a few of the old and cheaper cds sans bonus tracks available in many record stores. Avoid! Chris in DC Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! MUSWELL HILLBILLIES is freakin' brilliant, extending the Kinks' giant unbeaten wonderful album streak to six in a row. It's the studio disc of EVERYBODY'S IN SHOWBIZ that started the long slow downward spiral. Even then, the Kinks' '70s concept albums weren't as obnoxious and leaden as everyone else's '70s concept albums, and their 1979-85 output (LOW BUDGET, ONE FOR THE ROAD, the superb GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT, STATE OF CONFUSION, Ray's RETURN TO WATERLOO EP, and WORD OF MOUTH) was nothing to sneeze at, even if it couldn't match their 1966-71 run. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2002 08:49:12 +0000 From: "Stewart C.
