It was loosely based on a short story called "Memento Mori", written by the director's brother. I'm not sure which title I like better, but this way I don't have to deal with my mom calling the main character "Morrie". I was slightly disappointed with my second viewing of it -- not that it changed my overall opinion of the movie, but it wasn't as much of a revelation as I'd hoped. Okay, spoiler space... The big thing I got from a second time was just how much of a liar Teddy is. He lies, he contradicts himself; he obviously is in the habit of telling Leonard whatever's handy at the moment. And Natalie comes off better the seoncd time because you realize that she betrays Leonard *before* she genuinely sort of falls for him... a ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Dec 2001 18:09:56 +0000 From: "Redtailed Hawk" Subject: Left-overs! And Natalie comes off >better the second time because you realize that she betrays Leonard >*before* she genuinely sort of falls for him... Well, but in her "last" meeting (i.e., her first scene in the film), she still comes off very bitter and sarcastic. I wouldn't say she "fell for him." She used him. I picked up a lot of little touches on my second viewing. Like how Natalie shrewdly removed the pens from the desk before starting the big "Your wife is a fucking cunt" fight...or how the bloody photo of the murderous Leonard is shown in *black and white* the first time, so you don't realize there's blood until later. Brilliant. And then the Web brought a couple of neat bits into focus for me...like how Teddy is constantly trying to get the Jaguar's car keys from Leonard, so he can steal the drug money from the trunk. Or best of all, how the b&w shot of institutionalized Sammy suddenly morphs into *Leonard* for a moment, right before the scene ends. Wow! I'm wondering if "Sammy" existed at all, now. Teddy said he was just a con man, which would make perfect narrative sense, but like you say above, Teddy lies and lies and lies. I think the film left this aspect open to individual interpretation. And yet, the film's website (http://www.otnemem.com) *strongly* suggests that Leonard is a recent escapee from a mental institution...much more strongly than the film does. Best new film I've seen in *ages*. As far as I'm concerned, the only things which could have made Memento better would be if Ridley Scott had directed it, and if the cast of characters had included a whimsical gnome with aspirations of being a cartoonist. The fucked up thing is that DVDs have had "Chapter Select" listed as a feature on them since they started coming out, even though I doubt a measurable number of people ever cared -- and yet for Memento, a movie where seemingly everyone who saw it started talking about getting the DVD and watching it in order using that thrilling Chapter Select feature, they screwed up the chapter breaks so that you can't; many chapters include both a b&w scene and the adjoining color scene. Most critics of the film picked up only on the "backwards" aspect, overlooking the equally ingenuous interweaving of the conventionally chronological (among themeselves) b&w sequences - and the rather perfect way the two sequences dovetail. I won't give it away...see for yourself. For the curious and/or lazy, there's an article somewhere on the Salon site that details the whole thing. Sad to hear they fucked up the DVD - that was going to be my first DVD purchase (quite possibly my motivation to even buy a DVD player).
