He was, as every obituary ends by saying, 58. This is something of a sad way to roll into work, listening to Paul's near unemotional perfunctory remarks about George. I guess they never did heal those old wounds. Nobody seemed to have asked Ringo to comment. Now one half of the Beatles are gone - my favorite half too, the serious and somber and, to me, more spiritual half. Now we are just left with Ringo's alcoholism and Paul's O-Bla-Di-O-Bla-Da - ness of things, his rosy posy children's songs. I was thinking about what a hard society we have become. I reflected on the right-ish wing radio that I let chirp into my studio, giving me the illusion of company while I paint. I call it the 'I'm right and you're wrong' brand of radio, a tailor-made format for the 'black and whiters' of the right side of the spectrum. I thought how the hippies truly have lost, overrun by all the money of the last few decades. I am NOT going to get into a baby boomer diatribe here. I can remember when John Lennon died, but like with everything for me I was either too young [in the case of Lennon's death when I was 10] to truly comprehend the scope of things or too old [in so many other cases] to truly care. But I remember the powerful emotional outpouring his demise created. Today, we are too concerned with the latest white sale at JC Penney's. "Oh, he died? That's sad, well lets go I want to get good parking before the crowds get to the mall." Lennon's death was like a rupture though, like a toppling of The Towers. George's death is more like a passing, though at way too young of an age. His is more of a garden slowly gone to weed. No pun intended. So I guess my mind turned to death as I rolled down Olympic Blvd toward the establishment, to go work for 'The Man,' and gladly collect a paycheck. Hey today is payday, I almost forgot. I had this thought that for me death seems, voyeur that I am, like constantly walking out of a film 30 minutes before it ends. Warhol put it best when he said of death, "Oh, it's too abstract. I just think that she's gone shopping at Tiffany's." Part of me wants to stay alive for as long as possible so I can simply stick around and see how things turn out, how the movie ends. But I suppose that isn't possible. This movie never truly ends. George doesn't get to stick around to see how things will turn out either, his character has been removed from the plot. Death is the great equalizer, putting us all on the same level and reminding us of that fact every day, a thought that I think George would agree with. http://www.theweeklywalker.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2001 09:05:28 -0800 From: "Walker, Charles" Subject: Cleveland-bound >Now, apart from the question of whether an artist -- or that artist's fans >- -- should or would ever desire such a fate (though that's a decent question, >of course), does Robyn have a shot? chas in LA replies: i clicked over to amazon.com the other day and who was featured on the lead webpage for the music section but SB's UM! they were hawking it at a 20% discount, but i thought this was interesting esp now that the x-mas spree is upon us. your comment above led me to think that yes, now probably more than ever, there is a shot, but only under a 'very influential' type of a way in - a critic's choice and not a 'prom king/queen' type of scenario. has RH ever even played in Cleveleand? he seems to keep near the coast as much as possible. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2001 12:26:15 -0500 From: "Poole, R. True enough... But to be honest, I've completely dropped the ball in recent months, Robynbase-wise. I haven't added a new gig since the SB's left the US! I'm a mess... I don't know about Bayard, but if I were obsessive-compulsive, I'd probably be better off. The gig list originally came from Eddie Tews, based (IIRC) largely on his own research. Nobody knows how many gigs are missing -- but I think he/we can claim about 80% completeness, at least for the 80's onward. (The gigs that are there are mostly entered accurately, at least.) Sorry to burst any bubbles... Anyway, I believe there are quite a few gigs missing from that 1989 tour. Specifically, there's a gap from 6/22 (Toronto) to 6/27 (Columbus, OH), so I suspect the Cleveland gig in question would have been on 6/26 or thereabouts. So get out those old ticket stubs! You never know what you might find! John "not yet on Prozac" Hedges PS. Just recently Da9ve Stovall brought my attention to a gig in Champaign, IL on 2/13/92 that wasn't in the DB. And while he *did* scan the ticket stub for me (thanks again, D), it's not like any of us insist on that sort of thing! I am Fric Chaud. I have been here for quite a few weeks now, and I can tell you these people are mostly very nice -- quite willing to set you straight when you are wrong. There are just a few exceptions, like that viper Stewart whose name I won't mention. I hope you will have as much fun here as I do. - -- Fric Chaud ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V10 #444 ********************************
