It isn't a naive "either/or" proposition by any means. The BEST results derive from a complex interplay, a dynamic balancing act, between the two drives - as is reflected in nature. And in no way are they mutually exclusive or polar opposites. The extremist capitalists and anti-capitalists fail to grasp this obvious point. Healthy competition can coincide, compliment and even promote productive cooperation, and vice versa. It's when self-interest and competitiveness dominate and become nakedly aggressive and selfish, or when "cooperativeness" veers into submissiveness and lethargy, that the systems become ineffective and destructive. I would also note that currently the United States is spiralling deeper and deeper into the territory of the former.
