Apollo 18 has always been my favourite TMBG album; I don't see why it turned so many of you off TMBG. Part of it may be that TMBG has no real sound; it's an amalgam and I can automatically accept thigns added to that before I started listening and am critical of the things added. Another part of it is that they're not as witty as they used to be. The lyrics aren't as complex and intertwined as they used to be. So far...hmm...it's kinda hit-or-miss. I don't know if I like it better than Factory Showroom or Flood yet....I'm not sure if I like it better than State Songs so far; Idaho and South Carolina led me to expect something a bit more traditional from this album. No, on second thought, I like this a lot better than Factory Showroom. I just forgot how bad FS was. Cyclops Rock - I give the verse an 8 and the chorus a 3. Man, It's So Loud in Here - I remember back when me and my friends were really impressed with They Might Be Giants (and Nine Inch Nails) because they could make a drum machine sound Mr. Xcitement - Well, it's catchy, but what did They Might Be Giants actually do with this track and why is it on their album? I'd like it better if Doughty actually wrote lyrics. It's not the stupidest thing he's sung (Disseminated, Supra Genius) but it's close. Yeh Yeh - I really like this one. It's a nice 50s pop song that manages to avoid the stylistic excesses and dullness of most throwbacks. The way the backing track switches near the end just makes the song for me. Older - Dunno...the sarussophone and rauschpfife seem kinda gratuitous. "Hey, kids! We're using strange instruments like we used to!". Worked fine with guitar and bass. Mink Car - Ooh...phased vocals on the bridge. I love this song. Wicked Little Critta - I liked the faux-Boston accent on Self Called Nowhere. This one just seems so pointless. (She thinks she's) Edith Head - Robyn, John, and John ought to do "She Thinks She's Waffle Head". Eh list - Bangs, Another First Kiss, Hovering Sombrero, Hopeless Bleak Despair, Drink, Finished with Lies. They seem to like long, slow novelty songs. The joke always seems to wear thin halfway through. Or slow, repetitive love songs. So that's about 1/3 of the album that I could really do without, which isn't that great... Unrelatedly, I can't tell which John sings what. Yeah, that's what I always sorta thought. i always thought the live video version of this from 2 hip 4 Tv was great. I think it took me by surprise when I saw it as a teenrager. Can anyone offer > pointers? i'm never positive, but at this point i can generally tell them apart: Bangs - Linnell (nasal A on "bangs", says "yer" for "your") Cyclops Rock - Flans (says "ah'm" and "lahk" for "I'm" and "like", plus the lyrics are more goofy than creepy) Man It's So Loud - Linnell (that A comes back on "say" in the first line of the chorus. also, Linnell does most of the wordplay.) Another First Kiss - Flans (mellower voice, sweetly retro aesthetic) Fang - Linnell (creepy lyric, doesn't sound calm even when singing this quietly) Sombrero - Linnell (voice cracks up a little on the high notes) Yeh Yeh - Flans (sweet & retro again; his "baby" is more "behby" than Linnell's "bayyybee"; "groovy hah-fah") Hopeless Bleak Despair - Linnell (it's about despair, nearly HAS to be Linnell) Drink - Flans (doing a decent Linnell impression, vocally and thematically, but note the "rum"-like "room") My Man - Linnell (seriously Linnell nasality) Older - Linnell, then Flans Mink Car - Flans (that's right, the retro and gentle voice) Critta - Flans (even when he's NOT accentuating it, Flans has more of a Boston accent) Finished With Lies - Linnell (the way he swallows the "I'm" after "now" at the very beginning is very Linnell) Edith Head - Flans (pop culture references are generally Flans; see above comments about the mellow voice) Working Undercover - Flans (that's about as high as his voice goes; he likes the spy lyrics) i thought State Songs blew away both Mono Puff albums, and yet if i had to rank the songs on Mink Car, Flansburgh would have almost the entire top half. ("Bangs" and "It's So Loud" are the two best Linnell songs; both beat "Working Undercover" and "Critta", the two worst Flansburgh ones.) a ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Oct 2001 22:44:23 -0700 (PDT) From: Capuchin Subject: Re: Mink Car On Sun, 7 Oct 2001, Aaron Mandel wrote: > > Unrelatedly, I can't tell which John sings what. Flansburgh is smoother and -- err -- more soulful, maybe? Certainly more likely to smooth out his melodies. Whereas Linnell is a bit more nasal and harder on his consonants. They almost never sing each other's songs, so content alone can give it away where the vocals are uncertain (or few). I don't have Mink Car (I'm afraid to buy ANYTHING this close to my birthday), but judging from Aaron's descriptions, I think his notes are probably dead on. Contrast Triangle Man (Linnell) with Twisting (Flansburgh), to hear a nice example. Playing with the new free (speech, not just beer) DVD player that supports menus (!!!) ... Yeah. Or tossing containers of anthrax. I've got a plane ticket booked to Beijing (my wife is currently working there and in Hong Kong) on Nov. 8 and now there's a 'travel alert' issued for Americans worldwide. Let the nightmares begin. So much for Bush's, 'Let's get back to normal. C'mon! Let's get back on the airplanes!' > I'm > also very concerned that Taliban/Bin Laden will 'Sell' this as an attack > on Islam. He certainly is. CNN aired a statement from him (possibly taped earlier today) that is filled with some pretty hateful rhetoric against Americans, and he did say, "this is a war between believers of Islam and non-believers". He said that the US is "fighting Islam under the guise of fighting terrorism".
