We returned just a week before all hell broke loose. It's been a hard time for me because I feel like I'm visiting my early Vietnam past (when my parents took me on anti-war protests before it was the popular thing to do). The flags don't make me feel good. The president inspires little but scorn and antipathy in my gut. In addition, three people in my small community were killed in Flight 11 (I live right outside of Boston), and I pass two of their houses everyday. I realized that re-subbing to the feglist would probably make me feel better, or at least help me remember that there are people out there who don't feel that bombing the crap out of Afghanistan is a good idea. When I returned a few days ago, there was immediately a Viv-Eb flame, so I knew I was in the right place. I'm going to ask a real fegquestion now, one that I'm sure has been answered before. I was able to get an "I can read any region anywhere"DVD player (write me off-line if you want to know more about getting one of these sort of kind of not quite legal machines), and it arrived two weeks ago. Of course, I have no DVDs! I want to get Gotta Let This Hen Out, but I'm a bit confused. I went to Amazon, and they seem to have two versions on DVD at slightly (marginally) different prices. Can someone advise me on which to order? And is there a difference between the British one (is there a British one?) and these two American releases? You can write me back off digest. I picked up a copy at lunch and have listened to bits of it all the way through and I would agree it is a departure, though not a return to the original s/t release. I totally agree with you on the first album , which I though was exceptional. Quite a powerful album. Though the follow-up did try to pick up some of the strong points in the first album, with the exception of a couple of tracks (I did love "The Trick Is to Stop Breathing") it sounded more like a collection of b-sides. The power tracks were just too formulaic and forced. The new album is all over the place stylistically. A very slick sound that covers the gamut from pop to rock to hip hop to techno and more. There's a lot going on in each song, a lot of melody changes, sampling and a bit heavier on the use of keyboards/samples/synths. Certainly on one incomplete listen the verdict is still out for me but I think it's a stronger effort than 2.0. There's portions of many songs I thought were near brilliant in it's uniqueness but I'm not certain how the whole meal's gonna digest. - -Larry |-----Original Message----- |From: Poole, R. Lou Reed butchered 'Jealous Guy'! File that one with the rest of the gag-inducers, 'living legend' or not. I generally like Lou's signature sing-speak style, but his phrasing here was just terrible. Rufus was OK, although Sean and Moby made him unlistenable as well.
