It's just a little friendly back-and-forth. For those who are wondering, BN has released a number of instrumental albums. Some are incidental music for plays, a TV documentary, and an art instillation. CHANCE ENCOUNTERS IN THE GARDEN OF LIGHTS is a double album of short pieces about which Bill writes: The music presented on these two compact discs marks the consolidation of several years of musical and philosophical practice. Almost every piece was conceived during moments of intense stillness or "magical vacuity". For this I acknowledge the influence of the late Austin Osman Spare, whose technique for creating "automatic drawing" has found a sympathetic resonance in my own work. Of all the music I have made, this is, perhaps, the most personal and yet the least demonstrative. Attempting nothing and existing purely for itself, it is, nevertheless, a practical music, ideally suited to the occultist in search of ritual atmosphere or serene meditation. With such a purpose in mind I offer this work to my fellow initiates as a testament to the Gnosis and a confirmation of The World Within. Is this profound insight, or a pile of crap? I leave that for Fegs to decide. I would point out that Bill now describes himself as the world's laziest Buddhist. As I said, check his diary at >www.billnelson.com<. I don't listen to Bill's strictly instrumental albums all that much, but the 2 CD CONFESSIONS OF A HYPERDREAMER, which uses a lot of "found" vocals is pretty cool. The individual albums are called WEIRD CRITTERS and MAGNIFICENT DREAM PEOPLE. Evidently, a large part of NOISE CANDY is songs that didn't make it onto Bill's album ATOM SHOP, but some date back several years to the era of his Cocteau Records label. Everything was recorded in Bill's home studio, but the quality should be good. Mitchell Froom was approached to produce ATOM SHOP, but told Bill that he didn't see any way that he could improve on what had already been recorded. ATOM SHOP sounds as good as any album I've purchased in the last few years, so NOISE CANDY isn't quite the slapdash affair that some may think. I'm most looking forward to the KING FRANKENSTEIN disc, which Bill says is the guitarboy part of of NOISE CANDY, perhaps even more so than AFTER THE SATELLITE SINGS. - - Steve __________ Art is love. However, a title like "Ceramic Cock Einstein" or "Theme From the 3rd Movement of Sinister Footwear" makes me think "Wow, I wonder what that sounds like??" whereas Nelson's titles just make me go "Ugh...no thank you." :) Just got the new Suzanne Vega today...really looking forward to checking out her new Froomless guise. I have yet to see any evidence of U.S. authorities going easy on the lunkheads who commit these hate crimes. Everyone from local religious leaders to the President is publicly denouncing this activity. If it's being reported in the foreign press that we are not doing anything to crack down on hate crimes targeted at Moslems and other people of Middle-Eastern ancestry, than that is just unfortunate. - -tc ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 20:01:18 -0500 From: Dolph Chaney Subject: Re: bill n. When I did a project of poetry and short fiction based on Zappa records (available for view at http://www.sprewt.com/dolph/projectz.html), much of my work had to do with extrapolating from the concepts presented in his titles. Great great fun to do, and hopefully to read. And need it be said that this is a great bonus in the work of Our Robyn as well? Granted, the ideas in the titles are usually more compact than those of Messers Nelson, Zappa, or Pollard, but it's no wonder that those of us on this list take a jolt from reading a good, furry tracklisting. dolph np Luka Bloom - Turf ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2001 21:28:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Mike Swedene Subject: Fwd: Concert for NYC... Here's a press release issued Friday: 'Paul McCartney Speaks Out On the Concert for New York' A One Night Only Fundraising Event to Benefit the Victims of the September 11th Attack On the U.S. and to Honor the Heroic Rescue Workers NEW YORK-- To Air Live On VH1 On Saturday, October 20th, 8pm (ET/PT) From Madison Square Garden Paul McCartney, who last week was reported to be looking to stage his own benefit in New York City, has agreed to play ``The Concert for New York'' to raise awareness of the fundraising efforts on a broader scale. VH1, Cablevision and Miramax Films will join together on Saturday night, October 20th at New York City's Madison Square Garden to present LIVE ``The Concert for New York,'' a one night only music event to benefit the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks on New York City. The concert also will pay tribute to the rescue workers who worked tirelessly to save the lives of others. PAUL McCARTNEY: ``I'm doing this benefit concert because, in short, I love New York. I was there when the tragedy occurred and I witnessed the last moments of The World Trade Center twin towers. Heather and I were sitting on a plane at the airport, waiting to take off. Suddenly the captain announced that all the planes had been grounded. From our side of the plane we could see the Towers smoking and in flames, we couldn't believe what had happened. ``A tragedy like this affects everyone and everything. A few days after the attack we went down to the Canal Street area and you could smell it and feel it, people were still in a daze. ``At first I felt useless. I thought 'what can I do?' I knew I had to do something to help. So I'm going to do this concert. Although the events are dreadfully sad, in a way I was glad I was in New York when it was all happening because I was able to witness the tremendous heroism that has come out of the city since the disaster. ``This concert will honour those heroes and heroines and I'm very proud to be doing that. It will benefit the families of the victims, including the families of the firefighters involved. I feel a connection with the firefighters because my Dad was a volunteer fireman in Liverpool during World War Two. ``So I'm going to do this benefit show to show solidarity. The thing is that people may disagree with how we live, but this attack has crossed the line; it is a real no-no and you have to show the people who have done this that we are not going to put up with it. ``You've got to stand up and do something. I can't fight fires, but I can do a concert. It will be a difficult night, but it needs doing and I hope to help raise a lot of money for the families of the victims.'' But despite all the stories all over the world, Maria Morriss tells us she called Madison Square Garden and they weren't confirming any info about the show today. In an interview quoted by the Scottish Daily Record, Paul said, ": "I am doing this benefit gig because, to borrow a phrase, I love New York. I was there when the tragedy occurred and I watched the last moments of the World Trade Centre. I was on the runway at JFK airport when the captain announced we were grounded. We couldn't believe what was happening. Although I was very sad, I was able to witness the tremendous heroism that has come out of the city since this disaster. Update (9/25/01) From Skokiaan: Just heard a spot on Q104.3 FM in NY. They auctioned a 1957 Gibson Les Paul Reissue guitar signed by Paul. The winning bid was over $30,000. Proceeds to charity - I'm assuming related to the WTC, but I didn't catch the entire spot. And from Patti Murawski: Q 104.3 in New York, the classic rock station auctioned off an autographed guitar signed by Paul this morning. When I was leaving the car around 7:30, the price was at $8,600. I don't know what the winning bid was. I assume this was for one of the many charities aiding the victims of the WTC attack, because in the short time I had it on in the car they never mentioned which group was benefitting from the auction. Update (9/23/01) The New York Post reported Saturday that Paul and Heather took a cab down to the area near the World Trade Center Thursday night. While on Grand Street, they listened to President Bush on the radio. Then later walked down Varick Street and were allowed past the barricades by Lee Fryd, a local resident. "He [McCartney] said America saved Europe in World War II and that Britain was behind the U.S. 100 percent," said Fryd, a publicist who lives near ground zero, reported the Post. And from Gary Lyons: Just caught a clip of McCartney speaking from the back of a limo in NYC on MTV. Basically said that we should keeps our heads up and that Britain is behind us. Then he sang a verse of "Let It Be." Very nice. Update (9/22/01) * Reuters: McCartney plans firemen benefit (Thanks to everyone who sent us links.)
