I was never even aware of the band's debut, but the >new >album is just *wonderful*. I saw 'em live a few months ago with a stripped-down line-up (just three of them, I hear they actually have a much bigger line-up) and thought they were fabulous - really mesmerizing, beautiful stuff. Then I bought the debut album and found it a little too nebulous for my taste, for some reason. Maybe that was the point, though. They're opening up for the Pernice Bros. at the end of October so I'll get to hear some of their new stuff. Speaking of nebulous, I picked up the new album by the Circulatory System, which is the Olivia Tremor Control's Will Cullen Hart accompanied by scads of his E6 pals. Much less poppy than OTC - lots of dense, dreamy psychedelia, somewhat lo-fi, without OTC's usual musique concrete interludes. I'm not sure if I like it yet, but I think it'll grow on me. There's some really nice bits, e.g. all the songs that feature lots of clarinet, and one song that has a gorgeous cello solo. I admit that W. Cullen is not half the songwriter that his OTC compatriot Bill Doss is, but he's nothing to sneeze at, either. Oh yeah, and the album is dedicated: "For Hannah, love Will." His girlfriend, I guess. *sigh* Oh well. :) n. p.s. Yesterday was my birthday! The people who have attacked, firebombed, whatever, the homes and workplaces of Moslems in the US are terrorists. Six concerts, actually - totalling (I'm presuming) 17 discs at 3 per except for one that's just 2 discs (the first five have actually been released and sent to those who ordered in advance, and the sixth one follows in October). And they're planning on releasing another six-show bolus every six months for, um, a while. Price is fairly decent - roughly 18 to 20 bucks per show including postage, and they come in a plastic CD-album page that will fit into a binder they're also selling. Clever marketing - - they know their niche. If you're a Phish phan (I am), and are into it enough to have accumulated a stack of live shows (I am) - then this is exactly the kind of thing you'll like. The recordings sound fantastic (they're soundboards - apparently with a bit of mic'd audience noise mixed in) - way better than the "dankest" of the standard taper-section fare. If you're not a phan by now, eh, this probably won't change that fact. Though, to beat an oft pummeled horse, you just don't know what Phish are all about till you hear 'em live. I'm hoping they release at least a few of their Halloween shows, where they play an entire album by another group as their 'musical costume.' da9ve ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 16:25:09 -0700 From: "Jason R.
