I had a small, but thouroughly unusal(and delightful) experience yesterday and I was wondering if anyone could help me shed light on it. Im planting bulbs in the yard when I hear something in the grass behind me. Turn around. Its a pigeon, a prince among pigeons(or as my neighbor commented--" thats no skyrat.") Glossy clean coat, golden-eyed with a shining, iradescent emerald and pink neck and an alert, curious manner. And its walking towards me. Its inches from me. Jesus Christ, it's hopping up on my leg. It perching in my lap. What the ... . I dont know what to do. I coo at it abit. Seems to like that. I start singing. It really seems to like that, it moves its neck around and looks quizzically up at me. It has a blue band on one foot, a yellow one on the other. The yellow one reads 1F 2001 PAOF 1656; the blue one is blank. I move, it hops off and starts circling me. Several times. I move around the yard. It follows me. Keeps doing the circling thing, always left to right. Perches on my foot for awhile. It likes the songs I sang as lullabyes to my daughter, "Make New Friends", "Orange and Lemons", "Jerusalam" "What Goes on in Your Mind" but, as dusk is coming on I decide to give a try to "I Often Dream of Trains" and, well, it up and left then and there. Last I saw it was waddeling away down the middle of Roanoke St as the twilight deepened. Its was obviously not a wild pigeon but what was it? A messenger bird, a racing pigeon, a pet? Any pigeon experts here? What did the yellow band mean? Im of course playing it for all the symbolic worth I can. The problem is, when you look this stuff up you get a whole lot of different, meanings. Such as: constancy, gentleness, a fool, dupe, deity messenger, sincere love, dove, Holy Ghost, a form of Zeus, herald of Yama-a death god and ... if thats not all confusing enough, "a green stone pigeon invoked by the Maoris as an oracle called Kortangi. Ooooh no! You won't be getting any of that. It's not even considered an official Damned album by the band. Mr Scabies released it without permission and pocketed the cash (such as there was). They've been playing "Eloise" and "Shadow Of Love" now and again but that's likely to be the only post Sensible stuff you'll hear. As long as the play "Melody Lee" and/or "Noise Noise Noise" I'm happy. >I think Patricia Morrison sucks in the band. Just doesn't >work in The Damned. And that's EXACTLY why I wholeheartedly support the bill now pending in Congress for a $10 billion emergency bailout of the Jacuzzi industry! It's certainly not *their* fault that the recent terror attacks have shattered the public's confidence in the safety and security of consumer-grade bathtubs and sauna equipment... I'm not worried about the thousands of laid-off bath-product workers, of course; that's just good-ol' fashioned capitalism. But it's *absolutely vital* that Jacuzzi executives maintain their current salary and bonus structures -- otherwise, they might be hired away by those carpetbagging bastards in the kitchen-gadget industry, and chaos will inevitably result! I'm through with posting show reviews here, but I'm going to add a "concert diary" to my website sometime soon. I also gave the new Stereolab album a couple of definitive listens. I'm a little disappointed with this one -- I adore "Space Moth," but too much of the music comes off clinical and bloodless. I think the band could stand to increase the guitar content on their next release. The compositions are starting to sound like mere sequencer fodder. I continue to be in awe of how prolific this band is, however, and I love that such "difficult" music is still coming out on a major label in these alt-hostile times.
