I sooo wanted to be home Tuesday! I am still very unsettled like most. My friend who I stayed with in Oakland lost her cousin in one of the towers. I don't like this kind of 6 degrees of separation. I am happy to say airport security is beefed up, but sad to say not as beefed-up as it should be. I got right through with my pen knife on my key chain. The lady sitting next to Venus was knitting a wall hanging. She had neddles and sharp things. I guess we'll all just have to stay more alert when flying the friendly skies. I have a feeling "those were the days" will be a catch phrase widely used even more so since Tuesday. I am glad to hear of all the fegs safe comings! Good to be home, now I must go mow the lawn! Best! [found this posted on Usenet] CNN using 1991 footage of Palestinians celebrating the invasion of Kuwait By Marcio A. V. Carvalho All around the world we are subjected to 3 or 4 huge news distributors, and one of them - as you well know - is CNN. Very well, I guess all of you have been seeing (just as I've been) images from this company. In particular, one set of images called my attention: the Palestinians celebrating the bombing, out on the streets, eating some cake and making funny faces for the camera. Well, those images were shot back in 1991. Those are images of Palestinians celebrating the invasion of Kuwait! It's simply unacceptable that a super-power of communications as CNN uses images which do not correspond to the reality in talking about so serious an issue. A teacher of mine, here in Brazil, has videotapes recorded in 1991, with the very same images; he's been sending e-mails to CNN, Globo (the major TV network in Brazil) and newspapers, denouncing what I myself classify as a crime against the public opinion. The organiser, who was more like a host making everyone feel welcome, also tried to get people up and dancing, and the atmos was spherical. Bizarrely a bloke came up to me and said "Hi, it's Micky Godwin, isn't it?". It was biker Simon Hicks who I haven't seen in Bath for years, apparently because he now lives in (wait for it) Evershot! He was amazed that anyone would travel 50 miles for a Soft Boys gig, so I pointed out matt from Oxford and JT from the Smoke*. Simon said that the organiser was Robyn's sister's ex-husband. I've no idea if this is correct, but it would provide a connection with this one-horse village. Set lists: Set 1: Narcissus is a long boy Kingdom of love Tonight Disconnected from the ruling class Old pervert My mind is connected to your dreams Queen of eyes Underwater moonlight (no spoken bit!) Mr Kennedy Set 2: Astronomy domine Unprotected love Bells of Rhymney In the pulse of your heart Airscape Leppo and the Jooves Train coming round the bend Sudden town White light (it says on my set list but I don't remember what it means: _not_ WLWH anyway. It might even be an incomprehensible comment on 'Sudden town') Only the stones remain Encores: Human music Where are the prawns?** Strings Unfortunately my recorder battery didn't work: it's a shame because there were so many new numbers - Robyn said the band were trying out material from the new album. Kim has had a smart Michael Clarke-style haircut and looks silly in a whole new manner. It's a shame he wasn't turned up to 11 but I seem to remember that that was how he broke up the Soft Boys 20 years ago. Before BoR, Robyn said briefly something along the line of "Killing more people doesn't bring anybody back". Airscape was introduced as "Let me take you back to Shanghai in the 1930s" (what???). There was a magic moment in it when Robyn spontaneously sang the word "Elvis" (IIRC) and by pure telepathy Morris sang the same word in harmony! Having got into an Elvis frame of mind, Robyn stopped L&tJ after a couple of bars and said "Hold it fellas - that don't move me" which is of course what Elvis says after the false start on Milk Cow Blues Boogie. They obviously hadn't planned a third encore and Robyn said they were trying this new song because they had run out of material, but there were several songs from the recent tour which weren't played (Have to go sideways, Face of Death, I got the hots, I wanna destroy you [I can see why he didn't play that] and one or two others). "Strings" currently appears to be a one-chord bash with the word "Strings" occurring frequently - not remotely a sensible choice to finish a show with. The two new songs in the first set were very good, however. If I wanted to be critical I'd say that 'Sudden town' just isn't strong enough to follow 'Train round the bend': even in a throwaway song like TRtB, there is a magisterial quality to Lou's writing which makes it stand out. And (very surprisingly) Morris's harmonies were a bit off at times - probably because there wasn't room for adequate foldback on the small stage. Blissful gig, anyhow. And thanks very much to Brian Hoare for the lift! See you next time, Brian. - - Mike "sha la la la la la la la la la" Godwin PS There is no sign which I could see on the A37 south of Yeovil to tell you that you are entering Dorset. I had assumed that as soon as you crossed the border, you would be surrounded by pitchfork-wielding harvesters, gloomy masons desperate to get into Oxford, and that woman farmer with the odd name (Tess of the Doobie Brothers? something like that?). But not even a glimpse of Terence Stamp. Oh well... Footnotes: * I was telling my wife how many familiar faces there were, and she said "Why does he play all round the country if the same people come to all the gigs? Why doesn't he just stay in one place?". Hmph! Arabic is a Semitic language and the populations of many Middle Eastern countries are Semitic. Ancient Egyptian monuments often show the Egyptians capturing people who are recognisably Semitic and are often called the p-l-s-t ("peleset" similar to "Palestine").
