This is one of two new copy-protection schemes to hit the news within the last coupla weeks. The two are kinda similar, in that they both hide purposely bogus data in sub-code bits in the CD data. A regular stereo player will assume they're garbage due to a physically flawed disc, and thus insert "corrected" data so you don't hear the flaws. But, computer CD-ROMs will read the data and faithfully reproduce it when ripping to a .wav (or .mp3) file, resulting in garbage. Another company's scheme hides similar garbage data, but they go so far (or at least, they can potentially) as to tailor the garbage data in such a way that it can easily cause physical damage to your loudspeakers if you attempt to play a ripped copy of songs from the disc. One or both of these schemes are defeatable (at least in one way) by a program that's already been around for a couple years - - CloneCD: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/20947.html http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/20945.html So, I guess that answers your question above: new tech - dead on arrival. The MacroVision scheme is allegedly defeatable by a substitute CD file system driver (cdfs.vxd), which tells your CD-ROM how to read a music CD: http://www.cdfreaks.com/document.php3?Doc=48 Other interesting articles: http://www.cdfreaks.com/news2.php3?ID=2418 http://www.cdfreaks.com/news2.php3?ID=2392 http://www.cdfreaks.com/news2.php3?ID=2384 da9ve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Aug 2001 01:10:52 -0700 From: "Sirloin Stockade" Subject: Roger Moore = Man/Machine <6. He is amazing. Can anyone recomend the top 5 albums (High Fidelity reference) I should get to appreciate him more? I never realized how well his instrumentals would work in a Tim Burton film until now :) Herbie np - Tom Waits "Alice (demos) " One Two And Through Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo! Those articles said it was already deployed on millions of discs, which took me aback. aaron ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Aug 2001 08:25:59 -0400 (EDT) From: Jill Brand Subject: Jeopardy Was that a mainstream or MTV/VHI jeopardy question?
