I'm not sure about the Dukes disc, but I've already got five of the ten main XTC re-issues (www.absound.ca - ordering through Canada into the US is a great way to avoid import tariffs) - and they're fantastic. I've even compared the sound of the new vs. old issues directly on Black Sea on a friend's audiophile/high-end system, and the difference is significant. Lots more depth, imaging and clarity in the reissue. Can't seem to find confirmation of the Dukes re-issues either. >While I find a lot of his bird and elephant noises stuff plenty >grating, I like the fact that Belew is willing to experiment >in big ways -- even if the end product comes off as odder than >(for him) usual (like with that bar band from Cincinnati he hooked >up with a while back). This whole fetishization thing is weird... It's like, even though there are reproductions of the Mona Lisa everywhere, people flock from all over the world to see the REAL, touched-by-Da Vinci item... but what's the difference, really? Likewise, there's a million pairs of round wire-rimmed glasses in the world, but we pay money to see these particular pairs, because they were worn by St. John. What intrinsic value to they have, apart from the identity of their owner? What if they were exactly the same except for not being owned by St. John? Would they then be valueless? Encasing Lennon's holy relics under glass just reminds me of that bit at the beginning of "The Invisibles," where King Mob needs to consult a god for advice, and chooses Lennon - who, after all, has pretty much been deified. The quality of the clips was poorer than I expected - obviously shot on a very low budget, but then I remembered that, in the 80's, ALL videos had low budgets. They also weren't nearly as bizarre as I expected, either. The first two ("One Long Pair of Eyes" and "Madonna of the Wasps") looked a bit like A&M was perhaps attempting to segue Robyn into the mainstream market. There were plenty of Robyn-esque elements in some of the other videos, though (extensively choreographed dancing fruit and canned goods, for example). Come to think of it, "The Man With the Lightbulb Head" and "Balloon Man" were fairly bizarre. Just not in comparison to the songs themselves. The weirdest thing, though, was seeing Robyn doing all that 80's-era music-video posturing. It just didn't look...right. And what was with the hat?! I guess /no one/ escaped the 80's unscathed. Finally, a couple questions: is the clip of "Brenda's Iron Sledge" from the "Gotta Let This Hen Out!" performance? Or is it a different performance altogether? The initial allocation of free tickets has sold out, but I was advised to turn up anyway. A number that seems to work for finding stuff out is 0131-226 3864; the admin office will initially try to get rid of you, but plead nicely and they'll check the master database, which contains the details of how things are, unlike the booking system, which contains details of how things were earlier in the year. So, in short, I'm gonna try to go on both nights anyway. If it doesn't work out, I can always hang out with friends. If anyone finds out more about the Edinburgh gig, can they **please** cc in my home e-mail -- I'm off to points west (Missouri and Colorado) for a week and a bit and I so want to go to this show. - -- Stewart C.
