On July 20th the Soft Boys will be playing the Clerkenwell Festival near the Feghorn (aka the Three Kings) in London. This will probably be free and very likely be around 7:00 P.M. Since they've undoubtedly been rehearsing new songs they'll hopefully be playing some of them. The Soft Boys will be opening for the Pretty Things at the Royal Festival Hall on October 19. That's a Friday, at 8:00 P.M... and something else will be happening around that date, predictably enough to those who followed the tour diary. woj ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 23:52:31 -0400 From: "Ultimate Goal" Subject: rubbing like strangers A few months ago I ran into a rare NM/NM copy of the 12'' remix for Nightride To Trinidad. On the b side is a remix of Kingdom of Love (Unreleased Version). Tonight was the 1st time I listened to it and I compared it to the version that appears on the Rhino CD release Groovy Deco. To my surprise they differ in many ways! On the vinyl version there is electric guitar (sounds like ka-chunk) and pretty fills from an acoustic guitar. The CD version has no guitars. Also on the 1st chorus the harmonies start later on the vinyl than on the CD. Both intros are slightly different too. Near the end the CD version lacks the whispering *ahhs* that sound so mysterious on the vinyl version. There are a few other details not worth mentioning, but I have to say I like the vinyl version much better. I wonder why the original wasn't put on Groovy Deco. Probably for insane collectors like me. I really haven't given a close listen to Midnight Fish and the 12'' remix of Nightride To Trinidad yet. But I assume they are the same. Don't no if any one cared, but there it is for the record (not album!). I realized that it was probably in my old car when it went to the junkyard, so now I must face a future that doesn't include the spider story, or a Day in the Life, or Robyn getting confused on the verses of City of Shame. Could someone make me a replacement copy? Whatever media you offer will be great (with the few exceptions of DAT, minidisc, vinyl, and wax tubes) and you will be reimbursed for it. Anyone else find themselves scanning the music listings and finding exactly zero interesting shows and not many more even familiar names headlining the clubs? I used to go into 2nd Avenue records and not only recognize half of the t-shirts hanging from the ceiling, but wish I had the cash to buy half of 'em. Damn, I just turned 27, and if I'm not exactly square, then I'm at least a good deal more rhomboid than I'd care to admit. So, how does everyone here fight this? The musical niche that encompasses my tastes is steadily ossifying, and while it's nice to have a good idea about what I can expect to enjoy, it's hell on learning about good new music. I've gotta say, one of the best things to happen to my musical world in the last 5 years was learning about Elephant 6 from this list. But it sure is depressing to have a nice collection of favorite bands that gets steadily winnowed away due to them breaking-up (Grant Lee Buffalo), going on infinite hiatus (Neutral Milk Hotel), or putting out moribund release after release (REM). Oh well, at least it's better on my tinnitus. But anyway, I *did* go into a record store yesterday, and I *did* find something worthwhile; the PA was playing some very pleasing, acoustic, British-invasiony stuff, and I really found myself grooving on it. Almost as an afterthought, I asked what it was on my way out. It was The Shins -- their new album Oh, Inverted World. It turns out that I had just come in when the best song on the album (New Slang) was playing, but the whole thing is pretty darn good, I must say. I got halfway home, then decided to turn around and pick up a copy. All Music Guide only gives it 2.5 stars, but I like it better than that, and the review text certainly places them in good company. So, I guess random chance is the way ya' gotta go -- that and keeping your ears to the tracks. Maybe I should sign up for the feg mix tape exchange. - -Michael Wolfe ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 12:31:03 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: Youth Culture Killed My Dog >Anyone else have the experience of going into a music store >recently and wondering what the hell all these bands are? On the one hand, it seems like for anything really good, you should be able to get back into the suspense of it on later viewings, despite knowing the ending. Lots of very old stories, like the Oedipus myth (Oh my God! SHE'S HIS MOM!) depend on "surprise" endings, I think a good many fairy tales. I guess in some ways, as far as art's concerned, I aspire to be like Ani Difranco's goldfish with no memory, for whom the little plastic castle is a surprise every time. On the other hand, tons of modern stuff, from E. A. Poe on thru P. K. Dick (even by someone as stuffy as Henry James--The Turn of the Screw resolves in the last sentence) all focuses on surprise as if it was a key philosophical point, or maybe a metaphore for modern shifting viewpoints. For instance I recently watched Nicolas Roeg's (how do you pronounce his name?) "Don't Look Now." I think it's a great, spooky film, if sorta depressing. What I like about it is that the surprise ending doesn't give you a quick jolt then tie everything together, it shakes things up further & adds another level of grim interpretation (no cosmic reunion, the universe really doesn't care about us). Anyhow, I guess the thing about surprises is that big 1st time, which you remember on every subsequent reading/seeing. Or hearing--I always remember the shock of that bowed guitar in "Little Games." Or "She Said She Said" going into double time at the end (that's as close as I'm getting to Robyn). So that's why I warned about spoilers. At home I have a PC (Windows 2000) and a Sun workstation, both sharing the connection via an SMC Barricade 4-port broadband router, and it works perfectly. I find it hard to believe that you can't use the Linksys with the Mac. All it should need is computers with TCP/IP. I can think of two possibilities, though: The router doesn't have an HTTP interface for management functions, and their proprietary software only runs on PC's, or the box doesn't route AppleTalk. You're OK on both accounts since a) you've got a PC to set up the router, and b) you don't need AppleTalk. If you've set up the router to use NAT for your intranet, set up the Mac with a private static IP (e.g., 192.168.0.1) and use your router's IP (i.e., the address assigned to you by your ISP) as the Mac's router address. I can't imagine what about the router wouldn't support Macs. If you have a healthy TCP/IP config and a browser then you should be able to admin the router from either a PC or the G4. Linksys even has an applet on their website for updating the firmware from a Mac. Can you ping the G4 from the PCs, or vice-versa? Can you ping the router (typically 192.168.1.1 by default) from the G4?
