I'd been under the impression that this was merely some kind of swinging Roma movie, circa 1960, but it turns out this title is heavily ironic-there isn't much "sweet" about the vacuousness of the lifestyle led by Marcello, and his endless search for the so-called "perfect" woman. Like so many of us, Marcello only wants what he can't have, and is haunted by a past he can't reconcile. This film is also a telling indictment of the shallowness of a celebrity crazed culture, which has only become worse since that time. The main character is a gossip columnist who loathes himself for doing such work, yet on the other hand seems fascinated by much of it. Marcello Mastroianni gives a superb performance, and this has encouraged me to seek out some of his earlier work, such as Antonioni's "La Notte." Highly recommended, and you may find it at your local library. Aha, I never heard this factoid before. All right.... Now, how come the Soft Boys covered the worst Roxy Music song EVER, which is from a different album? This recent discovery still creeps me out. ;) >which is not >surprising, since that's when it came out and it is by all accounts a >fantastic album. Is that so? It's a pretty, atmospheric album, but I think it's much more "a product of its time" than some other Roxy Music releases. I used to really adore Avalon back in the day, but in the post-'80s era, I'm much more likely to pull out Siren, Stranded or Country Life. Those discs aged better. I also think Ferry's solo career has hurt Avalon's stature -- instead of being the graceful coda to Roxy Music's catalog, Avalon now seems more like the first warning sign of Ferry's descent into tuneless, groove-based muzak. In any case, so much of Avalon's appeal is based in arranging and production values...I think Robyn overestimates the songs' value when reduced to unadorned, acoustic music.
