I've always thought Truffaut is a bit overrated in general. He doesn't really have the singular "sense of purpose" or manifesto which most of his French New Wave peers have -- he's more like a traditional (if detached) storyteller who just happens to use some New Wave editing tricks now and then. "Day for Night" and "The 400 Blows" are at the top of my list, too. Another really good one which I saw in recent times: "Small Change." It's all about schoolchildren, and it's remarkable what he extracts from these kids, whom I gather weren't even trained actors. And yeah, I wasn't as keen on "Jules and Jim" as some other folks seem to be. I just remember liking how brutally deadpan the "sad" climax was presented. I've heard his covers of More Than This, Avalon, and Take A Chance With Me (one of my favs). Are there any more? Anyway I've heard very little of Roxy Music, but I really like the whole feel of this collection of songs (album). All of the songs sit very well together. Good for the mellow me. One surprise was a guest apperance of Paul Carrack on piano on one of the tracks. So this ISN'T what Roxy Music normally sounds like? If I like this one what would be the next logically one to get? If you're crazy about Avalon and want something similar, you probably should buy the adjacent Flesh & Blood or Manifesto (though personally, I'd say these are the weakest Roxy Music albums). I like Manifesto more than Flesh & Blood, myself -- the latter is rather sappy/sugary/simplistic at times. Or if you want an overview, perhaps try the live Heart Still Beating album, which was recorded during the Avalon era. It peeves me a bit that Robyn seems so fixated on Avalon, at the expense of every other Roxy album. I guess it just comes down to the Avalon songs being a lot more "strummable" than the more jagged material of the early days. Maybe this will get us away from the Dipthong Thread. I'm thinking about putting out a zine about an evil ex-boyfriend of mine. No, I know this isn't exactly a very original/interesting topic, but then, you haven't met this sociopath that I dated 5 years ago. This guy's last name is "Lockett." He used to brag about what a fantastic painter he was, and insisted that he was a misunderstood genius and that, in 100 years, art schools would teach "The Lockett Method," which he "invented." To me, his paintings looked a bit like Dali paintings, lots of photorealism..they certainly weren't bad at all, but since I didn't go into paroxysms of ecstasy upon seeing them for the first time, he always held this against me and accused me of not supporting his art. (whatever!) The point of this: could I be sued for putting out a zine using this guy's last name? Is anyone familiar with the law about these sort of things? All of the events that I'd write about are absolutely true, and quite amusing in a sociopathic kind of way (this guy fits all the criteria for "Narcisistic Personality Disorder" in the DSM IV). And has anyone ever done anything like this? Please dish. Carole, happy to be currently dating a very normal, sane gentleman. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2001 18:04:03 -0500 From: steveschiavo@mac.com Subject: Re: Avalon On Friday, July 13, 2001, at 02:01 PM, Eb wrote: > It peeves me a bit that Robyn seems so fixated on Avalon, at the > expense of > every other Roxy album.
