As far as I'm concerned, we have albums on LP, albums on cassette, and albums on CD. They're all collections of songs, in the same way that a photo album is a collection of photos or a stamp album is a collection of stamps. In fact the photo album analogy is very good - the songs are snapshots of the way the writer and musicians were feeling at a particular moment in time. >Patriotic songs-- oh wait... what's that Catatonia song about being thanking the Lord because she's glad to be Welsh??? And what about Van Morrison's "Celtic Ray"? A case could probably be made for the Proclaimers "Letter from America", too. And then there's "Belfast Child" by Simple Minds and "Only a Northern Town" by Billy Bragg, both of which are in the category of 'a good place despite everything'. In some warped, twisted way, I want to add "The dead heart" by Midnight Oil. Then theres all the crap songs put out when the world cup soccer rolls round again, exhorting various national sides. has anyone mentioned Gordon Lightfoot yet? Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Alberta Bound, et al? Or, for that matter John Denver (Rocky Mountain High, Country Roads, etc). I suppose they count as regionalistic rather than nationalistic, though. Hm... the Beach Boys' "California Girls", perhaps? Or are we moving out of the 'contemporary' (presumably meaning modern) era? After all, if we go back that far we can add Harry Belafone's "Island in the sun". Is there any reggae that's pro Jamaica (Funky Kingston, maybe? Don't know the lyrics...)? Off the top of my head, I can't > come up with even one. "England" by the Angelic Upstarts made me wish I was English. That ought to be their National Anthem--but I don't get to vote on that. Over on this side of the pond, The Tubes "Proud To Be An American" was probably 90% tongue in cheek but I think the sentiment may have been genuine. It's certainly falls more on the positive side (third verse not withstanding) which was what Eb was gettin' at originally. Lyrics follow, 'cause I think they're fun: I'm proud to be an American I'm proud of the groovy things we've done There's television, free religion, Rock 'n' roll, Standard Oil, Times Square, Jimmy Darren, Corey Wells, and Smokey Bear, price reduction, reconstruction, Peace Corps, and lots more Culture that we got to lend I'm proud to be an American And I'm proud Had a great time bein' one There's your school and my school and both of us in high school, surfboards, cigarettes, homework, Southern Comfort Boy's dean was real mean, Made us keep our locker's clean Failed nearly every class Ditchin' was a gas I'm proud to be a young American I'm proud, just think about it All the far out things that we've begun There's revolution, constitution, land, sea, and air pollution, cold wars, hot wars, gas wars, and confrontations, constipation, consternation, open hearted palpatations Muscular Dystrophy I'm proud to be an American Because we got department stores full of cheap guitars But when Sputnik plays 'em, you just go go go go I'm proud to be an American (we got two chickens in every garage ) And I wish every other kid could be one-- (in my country, the medium is the massage) 'Cause it's impossible to give Equality and justice to inferior foreigners too jealous to trust us Gimme your weak and your homeless How 'bout checkin' the oil ah, fella? Certainly worth listening to ;-) Their first full length album, got a lot of press attention at the time. Reach exceeds grasp at times IMHO, but there are some great songs. It was available on CD for a while so it's not all that obscure. I still have the vinyl as well (and I'm sure a few other fegs do too) so by all means let us know if it turns out to be a gold mine. +brian ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Jul 2001 17:42:18 -0400 From: "Maximilian Lang" Subject: Gotta Let This DVD Out. Hey, Just got a copy of the DVD, problem. It plays on my computer but not in my DVD player. Is this because I have an EVIL DVD/DIVX(which won't play VCDs for that matter)player? Or did I wind up with a PAL formatted disc, if it's PAL would it play on my computer? Yes I am Frustrated. Any suggestions welcome. I'm guessing $10 or so. I'm not sure whether Alias still has the reissue CD in print or not...that would be the key variable. Myself, I still have a vinyl copy of the original "Alternate Learning" album from the pre-Game Theory band. One of these days, I'll do my best to rake in a pile of cash for this online. ;) If all goes right, tonight I'm seeing Daniel Johnston and *Wild Man Fischer*. A very exciting novelty.
