All right! When does my membership card arrive? So, the new album roundup (why are there so many right now?) so far looks like this. Nick Cave - Certainly the most admirable of the lot. Not quite the most enjoyable, yet...it's not a grab-you-by-the-collar and turn-you-upside-down record like Let Love In, and so far there isn't a song that gives me chills the way "Are You the One That I've Been Waiting For?" did, but I suspect it will grow on me. Some of Cave's vocals sound unpleasantly strained, as if we're too close and can detect too many stretches. Someone will tell me that the effect is greater emotionally than it would be if he could (or did) nail those higher notes. David Byrne - Well...less exciting on the second listen, especially after checking out Feelings again in between listens. Still very good, and I think it improves throughout. REM - The first half is pretty stunning. The music is beautiful stuff, almost too sunny now for Stipe's voice, which I like but which I prefer amid thornier music like early REM. Still, he sounds energetic and comfortable and happy and it's a good thing. The second half of the album slides by a little too easily for me, but maybe it too will grow on me. Depeche Mode - It took me a very long time to warm to _Ultra_ after being burned by _Songs of Faith and Devotion_. Now I would count _Ultra_ among my favorite DM albums, though I'm not really a big fan anymore. So this album is basically the sequel, and it contains one EXTRAORDINARILY awful piece of crap entitled "The Dead of Night," a bunch of fairly tolerable songs in the vein of _Ultra_, and a good single in "Comatose." DM has no remaining energy and nothing really to say, but the sound they've settled into is nice enough. The cover art is nice, though (perhaps not as good as the striking cover art Cave used). And on to the subject line. Michael Stipe isn't gay, of course, at least not that he's stated, as far as I've read. He also didn't really just "come out." Almost ten years ago, he would state in various interviews that he wasn't "100% straight or gay" but that he wasn't keen on being labeled "bisexual." (This is actually pretty typical among gay-leaning bisexual guys, in my experience.) So his revelation that he's in a long-term relationship with a guy is not really a revelation to anyone who reads interviews. What's annoying is that the headlines are making him out to be 100% gay, which is probably really bothering him. Unless, of course, this "revelation" was carefully timed to promote the new album.
