Speaking of Bowie, it reminds me, back on the Grant Lee Hitchcock tour, in San Francisco, the last encore was "Ashes To Ashes" (which was utterly dynamite, and half the reason all by itself that I'd like to find a tape of that show), "Sound And Vision" (without "kung fu fighting"), "Satellite Of Love", and "Across The Universe". Let's see... two Bowie songs, a song Bowie produced, and a song Bowie covered. Some reviewers have claimed that they were making fun of Bowie with their whole take on it, but I think I detect something a little more reverent under the surface. I don't believe I've ever heard RH openly acknowledge Bowie as an influence, but I think it would make sense. I got his last CD a few months ago. Whistling While The World Turns, it's OK - not up to his very best, but he's certainly still around and doing stuff. Around the late '70s early '80s he was one of those other 'out-of-time' artists I admired alongside Robyn/Soft Boys. I've got Urgh on vinyl as well. Don't expect BBD to be anywhere as frenetic as Red Noise, it's more Bill in guitar hero mode. You might try to find his early solo stuff - The two-fold aspect of everything (2 discs), Vistamix, Quit Dreaming And Get On The Beam, and The Love That Whirls (Diary Of A Thinking Heart). I'd never tell anyone *not* to check out BeBop Deluxe, and three of the studio albums are available as imports. But, alas, not Drastic Plastic, which begins the transition toward Sound-On-Sound. There are several live albums, and there are some good customer reviews of those at Amazon. Of the in-print albums, I'd suggest Blue Moons & Laughing Guitars and After the satellite sings. If you like those, go for the others. Much more information at www.billnelson.com. It >seems to have more attack than the Syd version, and that cool organ solo >in the >middle. I don't know about the Pulse version though... I also like the Ummagumma version better, mainly because the band inserts an extra passing chord which adds significant drama to the melody. You know, in the third line of the verse, where the major tonic chord jumps to the major chord a half-step higher and then immediately jumps back down? Weird thing, though -- for quite awhile, I owned the first two Floyd albums via a homemade tape of the A Nice Pair compilation. And on A Nice Pair, the label inexplicably substituted the Ummagumma version of "Astronomy Domine" onto The Piper at the Gates of Dawn! So, when Piper and Saucerful were reissued separately during the CD age, I was surprised to hear a Syd version of "Astronomy Domine" which I never knew existed. (This dialogue reminds me that Floyd's More soundtrack is pretty much *the* catalog album I don't own...it has been at the top of my "git list" for years.) >Waitaminnit - just saw Eb's post... was the second song "The Man Who Sold >The World"? I could swear it was "Boys Keep Singing." Eb, if you could find >your copy of that video tape... Well, I absolutely know he sang "Man Who Sold the World" and "TVC15"...maybe he sang *three* songs? That's entirely possible. "Boys Keep Swinging" does ring a bell. But I know I remembered the SNL version of "Man Who Sold the World" for several years before I bought the Man album, and when I finally heard the album, there was a bit of cognitive dissonance for me. I was expecting Bowie to sing the chorus the way he sang it on SNL, and he didn't. I prefer the SNL melody -- instead of ending the chorus with "...the man who sold the world" in sort of alternating, adjacent notes, he sings "the man who SOLD [leaping to a high note] the world." I think that works better. :) I taped those performances only a couple of years ago -- when NBC first started showing "Classic SNL" episodes at 3 am on Saturdays, they seemed to be consciously picking episodes with landmark musical performances. They showed the ones with Kate Bush, Elvis Costello, the Rolling Stones, Zappa, Laurie Anderson, Devo, Talking Heads, etc. They also showed the Bowie episode. Unfortunately, after several months, NBC switched from classic Aykroyd/Belushi-era episodes to "classic" episodes from the Carvey/Myers/Hartman years. And whenever I flick it on nowadays, that's what I get. Phooey. The Comedy Central reruns seem to be the same story. Carvey's material has aged *horribly*...blecch. Now that I think about it, it makes perfect sense that there were three Bowie songs. There was one song with the "sarcophagus" (hrm...I never would've described his outfit with that word, but OK), one song where he had the superimposed marionette body and one song where he was wearing the "stewardess outfit." (All three of these costumes have been cited in previous posts.) And I *think* they match up sarcophagus = "Man Who Sold the World," stewardess = "TVC15," marionette = "Boys Keep Swinging." Right?? It would take me quite awhile to find the tape, unfortunately. I have a *lot* of little TV performances taped here and there on the ends of taped movies, and I don't really label the tapes beyond what movies are on them. Christ, I was scanning through an old tape not long ago, and discovered a taped Tom Waits/Letterman performance from the *Rain Dogs* era! Undoubtedly, you could find the Bowie/SNL info on the Web somewhere...or you could ask the Bowie newsgroup. I go to one of my pet record stores, find other used bargains and buy those. More gets put off for another day, which still hasn't arrived. I could say the same about 10-12 other long-missing albums, such as Yoko Ono & the Plastic Ono Band, a few releases by Guided by Voices, Pere Ubu/Pennsylvania, Komeda/What Makes It Go? and Sleater-Kinney/Call the Doctor. And then there's the King Crimson ProjeKCts and the Velvet Underground box -- heaven knows when I'll get around to taking the plunge on those pricey baubles. Found a few mentions of Guided by Voices, so I figure you guys can't be all that bad. I'm interested in Robyn Hitchcock as of about three days ago. I was reading an article in Magnet magazine about the Soft Boys "Moonlight" reissue... the Yo La Tengo and Elf Power and other testimonials convinced me to go get a copy... and I rented Storefront Hitchcock on DVD while I was out. The movie ended about 5 minutes ago (though I confess I was just listening, not watching, so I'll play it again later tonight). Obviously I was impressed by the CD, or I wouldn't be here. I haven't even listened to the bonus tracks or disc 2 yet... just played the first 10 tracks a few times in the car to see what all the fuss was about. So, a few questions to start... The USA tour is over, correct? Did the Soft Boys come through Atlanta? I'd hate to have missed them here just because I heard the album a few weeks too late. Is the DVD available in widescreen, or just standard? I noticed it went wide for the split-screen Timecode effect, and the disc says "standard" in red letters, maybe implying that there are other options. If I love Underwater Moonlight and also dug Storefront (especially Devil's Radio, Filthy Bird, Let's Go Thundering, Yip Song), what would be the best thing to get next? I just graduated from college and have yet to find a job, so really, buying albums is the last thing I should be doing... I'm trying to limit myself to mp3s until the first paycheck arrives... but if I can't find anything online, I might buy something else once Moonlight sinks in. From my brief mini-tour of webpages a few minutes ago, I got the impression that Hitchcock fans tape/trade/collect a lot of live shows. Does he usually present little rambling stories before songs, like in the movie? Play a lot of covers? Do any old Soft Boys songs? Allow/encourage taping? I wish there were more "concert films" like Storefront or Stop Making Sense. I heard that Martin Scorsese did one, but I forget which band it was for.
