I've already notified them (twice) about the particular Soft Boys show that's being auctioned; they're a bit slow sometimes to get around to checking out these reports, but I've gotten plenty of bogus auctions shut down before. It's a bigger thing than just any one artist's material - some bands who allow taping - and I'm thinking of Phish among others - - have said explicitly that they might reconsider that policy if sales on eBay and in other forums don't slow down. I enjoy this generous privilege granted by many bands, and am glad to spread the word about trading. It seems that many/most of the people who bid on these items just aren't aware of these chummy mailing list/newsgroup/fan networks and the ready availability of live recordings for the cost of media and postage. A couple years ago, eBay allowed any member to look up any other member's email address, given their username. I contacted a few people who had bid up a Roger Waters live disc to such a ridiculous amount (over $60 for a single disc - burned on a dollar blank CD-R and WITHOUT artwork) that I just couldn't stand it. I explained to them, politely, about the existence of trading networks, and offered them each a copy of that same disc (since I had it already - and yes, I actually DO have a life, but also a sense of fair play) for standard B&P terms. Three of the five I contacted took me up on the offer, and the seller presumably ate the eBay fee when the winning bid wasn't paid. Good. These days, eBay doesn't allow any user to look up other users' email addresses unless they have a pending transaction with that other user, so it's not as easy to contact the bidders. But, you still can report auctions of disallowed classes of items - - CD-Rs, specifically - here: http://pages.ebay.com/help/rulesandsafety/42030200.html >Ehh, whatever. Okay, which is it, guys? Property or > not > property? Cain't have it both ways. > I'm not an expert on this by any means, but my understanding of the very tricky subject (and very imperfect system) of patenting genes is not that they become 'property' of the patent holder. Rather the ability to use the FUNCTION of the gene to profit is what it is all about. If I discover a gene, or gene-product, I generally cannot just go out and patent it, without clearly knowing the biological function, and making clear statements on how the use of that genetic information is worthy of patent protection. I am not clear on how drug companies want to "deny regular folk the rights to their own genes". Most of us do not have the ability to profit from our genetic information, although I would love to learn how! (Besides 99.9% of my genes are identical to yours - so if I OWN mine, then do I own yours?) The idea of patenting a gene, in principle, is not a whole lot different than many other patents in biotechnology. However, it does sound kind of scary, and I think the media and common interpretation of patent holders "owning your gene" is not entirely accurate. The system clearly isn't perfect and the rules are not crystal clear (on getting gene patents) - but I think the future may get even worse in this regard. As genome sequencing becomes more common, and the small differences among individuals become understood, the idea of personalized pharmaceuticals, based on your own genetic makeup, will grow. THIS, I think, is where the real battles between us "common folk" and BigPharma will begin (regarding privacy and ownership). It is way rad, and I had the revelation that > GBV's excellent contribution, "Titus and Strident Wet Nurse," is actually > about Gormenghast. Think about it, won't you? Thank you. I have thought about it, and I agree. Actually, I thought about it long before you mentioned it, so I guess it's actually _you_ who agree with _me_. Sort of. I don't know. > I was recently at the comics shop and saw a comic written and drawn by > Archer Prewitt (one of those guys I'm supposed to know about but I don't) > called "Sof' Boy." Huh. I had a dream last night in which the French were calling the Soft Boys the Softies Boys. Or something like that (although, and as I've noted before, the French would call them "Les Garcons Softique"). Also in this dream, someone had soptted Robyn in the crowd at a Stereolab show, and reported that he seemed to be "vibrating with delight." I don't know how pertinent any of this is to Archer Prewitt. Um. I used to be friends with Barry, who was in The Coctails with Archer Prewitt. There. That was pertinent. Sort of. I don't know. > I would gladly sell my hair on Ebay. I wish I'd kept the abundant clippings > when I chopped off my Afro when I was 17. For all who do not know, Natalie Jane Jacobs has a lovely mop of curly soft hair, and should I ever be blessed enough to see it grow long, I shall take up scissors and hack it off in her sleep, and put it on top of my own head, and prance around, cooing softly. Beware, gnat. Beware. Vivien ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V10 #132 ********************************
