One of Robyn is blurred in a really humorous way- the lighting and the movement sort of combine to make it look as though he has this giant hooked nose like a fairytale witch. There's one really good of Robyn, one classic Kimberley and one ok Kimberley, and one soso Matthew shot. Also one fairly good Morris-in-action shot, and a soso sans-Matthew band shot. I'm a big Henry Cow fan and was delighted to see them mentioned several times in Jonathan Coe's excellent new novel The Rotters' Club (which is, of course, the name of a Hatfield and The North's second album). To add a little more to this essential topic - Bayard made an oblique reference to Cow Cow Davenport, the boogie-woogie pianist, and as the list's resident Presley idolator I'll just chip in to say that James 'Kokomo' Arnold is generally credited with Milkcow Blues Boogie, not Sleepy John Estes. How about Rawhide, though the cattle here are rather confusingly referred to as 'doggies'. Is this the same as cocks being called roosters because the early Puritan settlers thought the former word was rude? Link Wray had an instrumental hit called Rawhide. Wooly Bully? Henry Cow were so called as a silly pun on the name of avant garde composer Henry Cowell. Someone mentioned Pagan festivals being assimilated by Christianity. I think the word for it is syncretism. Isis's temples being turned into shrines to the Virgin Mary etc. Did you know that the Hebrew word applied to Mary in the Bible actually means 'young woman' not ' virgin'...? Blimey I'm meandering tonight, and I haven't even had a drink... Saw Yo La Tengo in the week. They were excellent but didn't get any Soft Boys vibe off them. Broadcast, who supported them, were pretty disappointing. Also saw Sun rockabilly legend Billy Lee Riley (Red Hot, Flyin Saucer Rock'n'Roll) who was in fine fettle for 67 years old. Good novel which deals with syncretism is Anglo-Saxon Attitudes by the late, great Angus Wilson. There was a TV adaptation a few years ago which made a fair fist of it. You may or may not be weird, but I'd say the reason it struck a nerve is that it was/is based on a flawed premise. You're assuming that he can't get noticed some other way, such as on his own, which isn't necessarily the case. Sure, it's obvious that the SB's are getting more attention now than Robyn solo was with Warner's, but that's almost always the case when an artist signs to a new label, isn't it? The publicity machine always seems to wind down after the first couple of albums fail to go platinum, especially with big labels like Warner's. My opinion (shared by many if not most) is that he should never have signed with Warner's at all. Also, there's really no reason why the Soft Boys 2001 can't make a record that's just as interesting now as the Soft Boys 1980. I agree that they'll *probably* just be Robyn's backing band, but who knows? They might surprise you/us/themselves. You've GOT to give them a chance, man! They're COUNTING on you! >>But I bought unbelievably expensive shoes instead. >Capitalist swine. Another false premise! He'd only be a capitalist swine if he *invested* in the shoes, had someone else wear them, and then exploited that person in some way by virtue of his "ownership" of the shoes. As long as he wears the shoes himself, he's actually using the fair compensation from his own labor to fulfill a personal need; therefore the money spent on the shoes can't be considered "capital" at all, can it? Unless the shoes were *directly* involved in the creation of wealth without contributing some form of work. You could call him a "consumerist swine," I suppose. I'd rather just call him "Imelda Marcos-like swine." But that's only because he doesn't have the same hair color as Ivana Trump.
