Sim makes some sweeping absolute statements which are patently false. nevertheless, one can try to read the essay as if it were written by a reasonable person, substituting "most feminists" or maybe "the mainstream feminist consensus" wherever he says "all women". the problem is that we're still left with some very wide-ranging statements, propped up by very little except for Sim's credibility. now, don't underrate credibility. any writer's got to have some, because no matter how many facts you buttress your claims with, you're counting on the reader's trust. very few people follow footnotes or look up references; if an author wants to take things out of context or, hell, invent facts, there's not much stopping them. so if Jason Lutes, who i know nothing about except that i like his first novel, started spewing statements which seemed completely contrary to fact, i'd give him the benefit of the doubt. i'd think about them and wonder whether he was onto something that i just hadn't realized yet. Dave Sim, though, has squandered the benefit of the doubt. when you have nothing to offer except bile and bullshit on topics where your readers CAN evaluate how reasonable you are, there's no reason for them to listen to you on topics where they're still trying to figure out what's true. > Aaron, I wouldn't have responded to your opinion piece were it not for > your subject header. This is going to be a Robyn Hitchcock record with a really good backing band, which has happened before (cf Egyptians). It'll have the sound he's currently favoring. It's not going to sound like "Can of Bees". The major difference will be material. Matador will probably put this one out, and obviously, they have a bit more money and reach than "Editions PAF!".
