Not to quarrel, but I wish the "baby" tees were available in grown-up sizes as well. Dang, Set list: not too different from Balto, with the notable addition of "Element of Light" which was of course wonderful. As with most reunion tours, the person with the most successful solo career is the highest in the mix, which means you could hear Robyn's guitar wonderfully and Kimberley's hardly at all. A very drink friend of mine insisted on referring to K. as "Bev Bevins" after the show. Whatever that means. Two encores, nearly 100 minutes in all. Wonderful stuff. Morris looks like a Michael Palin gangster from Flying Circus, while Kimberley has clearly been working on his Nigel Tufnel lip-curl. Cant want to hear the "new direction." To me it sounds like it's Bryan Ferry's first solo album (or did he do an official one prior to that)? That's not a big deal if you can stomach that stuff (I have Bete Noire, but couldn't deal with Mamouna, and never have bothered with any of the others), and I think we all know that "More Than This" is pretty much unassailable. I can see why Robyn would want to play the album, but -- and I know this is heresy -- I don't really like his Roxy Music covers very much based on what little I've heard. His voice is about 180 degrees from Ferry's, and while they _are_ great songs I don't think it follows that a song is just its skeleton. The lush arrangements _matter_. If you strip them out the song isn't the same, and sometimes it's just as good but different, and sometimes it's ruined. Having said that, I can imagine Robyn's versions of "More Than This" and "Take a Chance With Me" working okay, just not in total stark acoustic mode. Fitting, then, that they should suddenly re-form to tour in support of a reissue of their 1980 album, Underwater Moonlight, long regarded as a classic of sorts or, to put it more accurately, a classic out-of-sorts. Hitchcock was still a young man when he wrote such hummable relationship-bashing songs as "Insanely Jealous," "He's a Reptile" and "I Wanna Destroy You." Now that Hitchcock is 20 years older and looking positively Peter Cook-ian, with his hair on the salt side of the shaker, songs such as "Old Pervert" ("Let me show you what's in my fridge") make far more sense than perhaps they ever needed to. Kicking off the reunion tour Saturday night at the South by Southwest music festival, drummer Morris Windsor, bassist Matthew Seligman and, most significantly, second guitarist Kimberley Rew (also in silver-gray-hair mode and sporting a semi-delusional, fixed smile throughout the band's performance; maybe he was afraid someone was going to yell out for "Walking on Sunshine") provided the instrumental power and pop, with the kind of jangling, jagged-edged arrangements that made them cult-worthy to begin with. There were those in the crowd at the full but not jammed Austin Music Hall who seemed to be disappointed that the group's cerebral rather than physically draining performance of this music from 1980 hadn't actually made them feel like it was 1980 again. To which all we can say is that it's important to remember to remember that the Move once had a hit in the U.K. with a song called "I Can Hear the Grass Grow." They spend their energy differently over there. This was one of the best shows I've seen in years!!! This was my first venture to Fletcher's and was surprised to find it so small. What, maybe a 100-125 people? This was the first night of their tour aside from the SB's brief appearance at SXSW. The YFF were obviously damn near giddy having the opening slot and were EXPLOSIVE with enthusiasm. The band just rocked! They played a pounding 45 minute set and did a nice cover of the Kink's "Picture Book". Most of their songs were from their excellent double release with the Minus 5. You never know what to expect from reunion tours, but this one was for my own personal record book. Absolutely one of the best shows I have ever witnessed. This was a highly charged show that opened with Robyn welcoming all to the UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT 21st birthday party. And it had that party atmosphere. I though the band was exceptionally loose. You know sometimes you go to some shows where the feeling is just "electric", this was one of them. Most of what they did was from UM of course but they also delved into a few Egyptian and Robyn tunes as well. Kimberly Rew was so animated I thought he would spontaneously combust. I loved his hearing his "high vocal" accompaniment with Robyn again. I've seen Robyn *many* times, but I've never seen him rock like this. Most of the heavy guitar work was actually footed by Kimberly though. Very psychedelic, very heavy, with Robyn and Kimberly doing dueling leads at times. WOW!, and "The Old Pervert"...intense! Sorry for any of the Fegs that I missed an opportunity finally meet, but it was rather chaotic just getting up from Chapel Hill, NC to see it at all. How did everyone's recordings turn out? Mine came out quite well except I missed 2 songs I think due to logistical reasons. "I wanna destroy you", and they meant it, they did. - -Larry "the past sure is tense" Don van Vliet _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 10:50:39 -0500 From: "Poole, R.
