Hmm. Mmm... 'Trout Mask' certainly has some unaccompanied poems on it (Orange Claw Hammer, Well, and the Dust Blows Forward and the Dust Blows Back) but the only time I ever remember Don reciting onstage was at a concert where he read out the first verse of 'Electricity' and then left the stage while the band played the song as an instrumental. But there was a time when he would do some free-form word associations in things like '20th Century Quaker'. I once saw Kevin Ayers and the Whole World do a brilliant thing - a short story more than a poem - where there was this pilot who was determined to scare his wife's lover to death by bizarre acrobatics. I think Lol Coxhill read the story while the rest of the band (Mike Oldfield, David Bedford etc) did the aeroplane noises. Don't bother they're here! Hey Splangies, First, SXSW was well organized, peaceful, smooth and well worth the trip. Lots and lots of good bands playing mostly for free, and I saw very little rowdiness until about 2:00am, when we were on our way out anyhow. Even the wristbanders and cardholders had to stand in line for the 'big' shows. The key to being a walkupper is, get there about 1 hr before the doors opwn and you should get in. After the Soft Boys show ended at a about 11:00, we walked over to see Eric Johnson and they had stopped letting walk-ups in about three hours earlier, so the long line, that wasn't moving at midinite was full of wristbanders and badgeholders. There is no in, out, in for walkups so if you want to see the late show you are gonna have to wait. The first evening show at the Austin Music Hall was Mark Eitzel, kinda disappointing though he does have talent but needs to refine his show. The bass/slide/lead player is was good, as well as the keyboard player who played bass when the other guy didn't. The electronic percussion guy played some kind of Korg, pedal looking device, like a keyboard. I didn't get a good look at it but there was only a single 1/4" line coming out the back. If anynone knows what that thing is, let us know. The Soft Boys sounded good, except for just a little extra string buzzing here and there and I would say the show was excellent. Robyn played a shining, slightly grained blue Telecaster and Kimberly played a white Strat. Mathew had a black Fender Precision, and Morris played a Fibes(?) trap kit. I just hope the Portland show is nothing but new material. Ooh, sorry, that's the Portland show next year. They did play at least something unfamiliar plus the set was less than 50 minutes so they could have new stuff rolling out as they go along. The recordings are pretty good, but I think the mic was playing a little out of it's league. Maybe less than on 1% of the recording can I hear any distortion, or what I call crackling. I will get the songs named and make a few copies. If anyone wants one let me know and we can probably work something out. Those with sites who would like them uploaded send me a note. Am I still allowed to talk about this stuff or is some short guy with a funny hat and a plaid sports coat escorted by a constable gonna come to my door and serve me with a summons or a notice to appear? gss ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 16:39:24 -0500 From: "Irish Airman" Subject: Tapping the Feg creative consious Eb or Robcow or someone brought up: >a cover of Fairport >Convention's *exquisite* "Tale in Hard Time,-- Ah yes. Robyn Hitchcock's Invisible List story by Jaan Uhelszki Robyn Hitchcock has been called a latter day Syd Barrett, with his skewed vision of life, which stops just this side of the macabre. The witty and whimsical artist made his first mark in the post-punk psychedelic group the Soft Boys, until the beloved outfit called it a day in 1981. Following what many consider the premature demise of the Soft Boys, Hitchcock spent his time writing for the equally eccentric Captain Sensible before forming his own group the Egyptians with Andy Metcalfe, Morris Windsor and Roger Jackson. This new outfit cut a wide swatch through music's "outsider element" with raging monologues on the odder aspects of life. Songs like "Man With The Lightbulb Head," and perhaps their best-loved release "My Wife And My Dead Wife," a modern day ghost story about the intrusion of the protagonist's late wife into his current relationship, exemplified the Egyptians' appeal through surreal subject matter. Creem Magazine's Bill Holdship once proclaimed, "God walked among us," after witnessing a Hitchcock performance, an experience that even jaded critics have described as hypnotic. Considered one of the most respected singer-songwriters of recent times, Hitchcock has influenced the Los Angeles Paisley Underground Movement, and bands from R.E.M. to the Replacements (who once begged Hitchcock to produce an album for them). This hero of alternative music is currently in the process of reforming the Soft Boys and recording a live album with them March 29th at Detroit's St. Andrews Hall -- a reunion sure to cause flutters in the hearts of hard-core fans akin to the reconstitution of the Beatles. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 20:18:45 -0600 From: "Gene Hopstetter, Jr." Subject: Mucky the MP3 >From: "brian nupp" >Subject: Re: South by Soft Boys > >If anyone's interested www.underwatermoonlight.com has a lovely mp3 of QoE >from last night. Oh, and careful listeners will note that Robyn is in fact singing "Mucky the pig" in the song, not "Lucky," "Chucky," or "Plucky." Hmm, wonder what other old threads I can resurrect while I'm at it? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 22:17:27 -0800 From: "Russ Reynolds" Subject: Re:beautiful boy > As long as they do "Once bitten twice shy", "Roll away the stone" and "All > the young dudes" I'll be happy! I wouldn't count on Roll Away The Stone, but the other two would pretty much have to be in the set. > - - Mike "last saw Ian Hunter in 1974" Godwin Easily my favorite non-Hitchcock shows have been Ian Hunter shows. First saw him in '81 on a rainy night at the Old Waldorf in SF. Mick Ronson was playing keyboards that night because the regular keyboard player was ill. Loose, fun show. At the Waldorf the band had to walk through the crowd to get to the dressing room. I shook Ian's hand and told him he was God as he walked by. I don't think enough time had elapsed since John Lennon's death for him to be impressed with that. Saw him a few years later at the Stone in SF, some time between All Of The Good... and YUI Orta. He was too damn cool. I'm trying to remember who opened...I think it was Paul Young? He (Hunter) had some hotshot 21 year old (or younger) bassist who was technically pretty amazing but a bit too much of a show-off. I forget his name but I believe he played on most of YUI Orta. I actually went out and bought the "Teachers" soundtrack after hearing "I'm The Teacher" that night. It was nowhere near as good on the record. When I think of great shows I've seen, that one ranks at or near the top. Saw him again after YUI ORta, with Mick Ronson again at the Oasis in San Jose. Extremely pathetic turnout but another great show nonetheless. This might have been Ronson's last tour, I don't know. I know he was diagnosed with cancer not long after. Ian Hunter is just a great performer, an underrated songwriter and one of the coolest living humans. > PS Who Roger Hodgson? Must be a keyboard player, presumably. Supertramp. - -rUss ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V10 #82 *******************************
