Why, let me whine, too! Well, I haven't posted in a while! But mark's recent statement of joblessness has prompted me to finally reveal some of what's going on in Quail-world. To put it simply, due to the dot-com crash, I no longer have the funds to run The Modern Word as a full-time venture. I am currently back on the market, looking for work. I have until April 1st, then I draw a small monthly retainer to keep the hosting fees paid, and I have to run the site the way I did from 1995-1999, which is essentially as a part-time obsession. So my entire energies have been focused on building a resume, ramping down the site, and looking for a new job. Yes, this is a profound disappointment, on the other hand, I did get to pursue a dream for almost two years. I have no real complaints, and I still plan to let the Modern Word/Libyrinth grow at whatever pace I can. Anyhoo, there you go! So Mark, you are not alone -- maybe we can open an ice cream shop together, Quail & Sharkey's? What do you think -- willing to relocate to Vermont? - --Quail - -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Great Quail, Keeper of the Libyrinth: http://www.TheModernWord.com The places I took him! I tried hard to tell Young Conrad Cornelius o'Donald o'Dell A few brand-new wonderful words he might spell. I led him around and I tried hard to show There are things beyond Z that most people don't know. I took him past Zebra. As far as I could. And I think, perhaps, maybe I did him some good... Oh, by the way, why did the US government ban the bitter almond tree in the 1950s, and what is the sweet almond? Oh, my favorite song by the Ramones: "Beat on the Kid." [I think she means "Beat on the Brat"--MT] Those people with those kids. I wish they would go out in the pesticide lawns and eat the grass and do us all a favor. Their parents are so stupid they fuck like rabbits and can't seem to stop or have sense to use birth control. What a bunch of dumb fucks. Would someone poke them with drugs or something and stop them already. The middle class are the worst, because they spend so much money on those spoiled brats--they are brats, brats, brats, brats, brats, and we are supposed to treat them as special. I'm special--and I'm an adult, and I refuse to treat their kids special. Our world needs less of those dumb shits. Oh, well. Don't tell neighborhood watch--I mean the witch hunters--about me. They are so afraid of terrorists! And the media is pumping them with dis-information as usual--to be afraid of their neighbors--that's the same thing Hitler did. Doesn't anyone know their history? What a bunch of dumb fucks! Please would someone help me get to Italy or Europe somewhere where there's some intelligence! Please--before they send me to a nuthouse, and there are even stupider people there, if that is possible. A couple of days ago, I did look up Eddy's top-10 lists for the past three years, on the Village Voice site.... 2000: Eminem, Everclear, "Bring It On" soundtrack, I-F, Angel in Heavy Syrup, DJ P & DJ Z-Trip, Daphne and Celeste, Queens of the Stone Age, OutKast, Chicks on Speed 1999: Kid Rock, DMX Crew, Les Rythmes Digitales, Days of the New, Arling & Cameron, the Coup, Tim McGraw, Turbonegro, Cobra Verde, the Gathering 1998: Everclear, Faithless, Madonna, Los Umbrellos, Mindy McCready, Monster Magnet, Rammstein, Dr. Bombay, Stereo Total, the Donnas I can't complain much here, because I haven't even heard (or heard OF!) many of these bands. (Have you?) I will say Everclear is about the sappiest tripe I can think of, Rammstein is godawful and there's not any album here which personally means much to me. I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me out, 'cause I'm really stupid. :P Okay, so this weekend I bought a DVD player (Panasonic DVD-RV20, Dolby and dts compatible, 96 kHz/24-bit audio D/A, 10-bit video D/A converter for enhanced DVD picture quality) and a home theatre system (700-Watt Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Receiver with 5-Speaker Package and 200-Watt Powered Subwoofer, 700 Watts of Total Power with Dolby Digital and DTS Surround Decoding, 100 Watts for Left, Center, Right, Left Surround and Right Surround Speakers, 200 Watt Subwoofer Amplifier). Got all that? Awright. I have no idea what to do with this stuff. :) I mean, okay, the wiring for the surround system was color-coded, so I got that hooked up with no problem, but there are a few things I don't understand, and the manuals are not very helpful. I was wondering if anyone here has any answers for me (I'm sure the info is out there on the web somewhere, but darned if I can find it. Someone needs to create a search engine that doesn't allow BUSINESSES to register their sites!) So here are my problems: 1) My television has only one kind of input: coaxial cable. I gather that this is the worst kind of hookup you can have? Does this mean that having a dvd player is pointless? Will my video be any better than it is with my VCR? 2) My home-theatre receiver doesn't have a coaxial output, and someone told me I need an "RF converter" from RadioShack in order to connect from the reciever to the TV. Is this true? Also, I've only got one input on the TV, so in order to connect both my VCR and DVD player, will I need to get a splitter, or can I connect both the TV and DVD into the reciever and then just go RECEIVER > CONVERTER > TELEVISION? 3) The indicator on my reciever doesn't show all 6 speakers lit up when I put in a DVD (it only shows the front left and right). Is this because I don't have an optical cable connecting the DVD player and the reciever? Do I need to use an optical cable instead of rca plugs if I want surround sound? 4) Finally, what the heck should I have my reciever set on? Dolby Digital 5.1? DTS? Dolby Pro Logic? Stereo? 3-Stereo? I had no idea there were so many different kinds of sound! :P So totally confused. I realize that a lot of this stuff is probably specific to my particular components, but any and all help would be much appreciated.
