That's because Sim has said that READS is directed at a very narrow segment of CEREBUS readers; more specifically self-publishers (like himself). READS represents a convergence and a splitting apart of the CEREBUS readership. It's a cautionary advisory explaining why creative men should be devoting their time to pursuing their Muses instead of women, since the "female agenda" (in the majority of cases) tends to be focused on the all-consuming goal of "breeding" -- which usually consumes an individual's time for a great many number of years. Note Sim's motif of repetitive patterns and wallpaper throughout the "Reads" series; I'm guessing that he sees "female existence" as something that implies connectiveness, uniformity and repetition, but not creating anything that is particularly noticeable, note-worthy or stand-outish -- just like the patterns on wallpaper. (Whereas, in Sim's view, "male light" is capable of creating great innovations and masterpieces.) So Male Light should do best to avoid the Void that would drain all its energy away and prevent the creation of more original and intellectual endeavors. /hal ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2001 15:59:47 -0800 (PST) From: Viv Lyon Subject: Re: [comics] Re: sim and chicks (beware: liberal use of the "m" word) On Fri, 23 Feb 2001, hbrandt wrote: > It's a cautionary advisory explaining why creative men should be > devoting their time to pursuing their Muses instead of women, since the > "female agenda" (in the majority of cases) tends to be focused on the > all-consuming goal of "breeding" -- which usually consumes an > individual's time for a great many number of years. You know, I wouldn't mind this _at all_ if he were saying that creative PEOPLE should stay out of relationships and devote their energy to creating (one of the tenets of Straightedge philosophy, my Dead Kennedys-listening boyfriend informs me). The fact that he frames it as a fundamental dichotomy between the two sexes, instead of between "normal", non-creative people and "inspired" creative people, suggest a certain amount of, well, sexism. Note Sim's motif of > repetitive patterns and wallpaper throughout the "Reads" series; I'm > guessing that he sees "female existence" as something that implies > connectiveness, uniformity and repetition, but not creating anything > that is particularly noticeable, note-worthy or stand-outish -- just > like the patterns on wallpaper. My existence is nothing like wallpaper, and I don't even consider myself particularly creative. Good lord, how can you fail to see this as totally dismissive of the talents and creative energies of women? How can you fail to see this as the misogynist clap-trap that it is? You're admitting, here, that these are in fact Mr. Sim's views (which was patently obvious in the first place). So what now prevents you from labelling him what he in fact is? You seem like a reasonable guy, Hal, and that's why I keep harping on this. Is there something you're not telling us? Like, you happen to sort of agree with Sim's views, but you don't think you're a misogynist? I'm perfectly willing to countenance other explanations, but at the moment I can't come up with any. Guess (being that I'm a woman) that shouldn't be too surprising. Vivien ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2001 16:48:11 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Oh, I almost forgot! Well, I'll admit that they are Viktor Davis' views. Most likely they reflect Dave Sim's views as well, but as I said, I don't know the guy. I just read his comics (which are state-of-the-art, by the way.) > You seem like a reasonable guy, Hal, > and that's why I keep harping on this. Is there something you're not > telling us? Like, you happen to sort of agree with Sim's views, but you > don't think you're a misogynist? I only happen to agree that Sim's views are as valid as any other "story" and are certainly no more irrational/harmful than many Feminist tracts, which are applauded daily without opposition on shows like Oprah. I don't agree that Sim's writings make him a "misogynist" (necessarily). For all I know, Sim could just be satirizing Ayn Rand. To address your question of my personal views, I certainly don't agree with all of Sim's (Viktor's) writings. I tend not to agree with vast conspiracies of "Devouring Rapacious Female Voids" and "Rational Male Lights" or, for that matter, Theories Of Everything. I don't have delusions of self-grandeur or paranoia. Now, I do find Sim's attempts at "Balance" in this (Feminist/Cirinist/Kevillist?) society and the Emotional reactions and ripples that result amusing to observe. However, I'm far from being a willing and/or qualified candidate to "defend" Sim's views. I'm sure Sim would find my life Pathetic (being in "Merged Permanance" myself, I'm a mere "male" in Dave's eyes, and certainly not a Man). I don't know of any who subscribe to Sim's ideals who aren't single or heading that way fast. > You know, I wouldn't mind this _at all_ if he were saying that creative > PEOPLE should stay out of relationships and devote their energy to > creating I agree with you here.
