The quality of the vinyl wasn't all that par, kinda turned me off. Too bad cause I really like Chris Squire's playing. Been really diggin' Yes' Drama and the Buggles' Age of Plastic lately. These were out the same years as Underwater Moonlight and A Can of Bees respectively. It's fun to listen to other music that was out at about the same time as these records. Totally different music though. I wonder what Chris Squire would have done to Robyn's Music. Probably a good thing they never hooked up! Fish Out Of Water is a must have if you like Yes from what might be called the classic period. When the Proggie mood strikes me, I've been known to listen to it 3 or 4 times in succession. Sorry, but Collins English Dictionary lists "judgment" in preference to the variant "judgement". CED is used in many UK governmental places as the official source of spellings, usage and definition (we were pleasantly surprised to find out). > a g followed by anything other than a vowel is always > be pronounced as a hard sound (as in 'regret', 'Gross', etc.) English has no rules without exceptions (I guess that might be an apophthegm, which in itself proves the exception). This is Robyn Hitchcock at the time he was writing warm and peaceful ditties such as "Trash" and "Sandra's Having Her Brain Out"? The words immediately before "_The Maxx_" were "That vaguely icky feeling I got all the way through". > What don't you like about The Maxx? If I could be more specific than "that vaguely icky feeling," I would be. I mean, I know it was supposed to be somewhat sordid and creepy, but I felt as if I couldn't trust the author in some basic way and that made it twice as scary. I don't know how to explain it. I mean, I liked the series -- I own all the issues (I think) -- but it left me feeling kind of queasy. I had the same problem with _Watchmen_, but there I think the feeling was more understandable. And while we're on the subject of comics, why can't I enjoy any of Neil Gaiman's work when it's not in word balloons? When he does it with dialogue and "staging" it seems so much more eloquent and skillful than when he fakes it with overly cute prose. >From: grutness@surf4nix.com >before on this list, a g fillowed by anything other than a vowel is always I love this new word "fillowed"! This word is used in a Firesign Theater sketch, and I have long wondered, somewaht subconsciously, what it meant. Given that Yes was one of the first bands I became a fan of (I think Fragile was about the tenth album I ever owned), it's somewhat surprising that I've never even heard Fish Out of Water. But if I saw a cheapie vinyl copy somewhere, I'd probably buy it to check out. Hopefully, it's better than the Jon Anderson solo album I got stuck with a few months ago.... (And that was supposedly Anderson's *best* album.) I ended up buying those half-price Sony MDR-V600 phones, as much to test them as to keep them. Now that I've heard them, I'm almost certainly returning them. And I was checking the headphone discussion forum at http://headwize.com, and this seems to be *the* headphone model which everyone beats up on...whew! And they have the same general criticisms which I have: "bassy, murky and muddy." Hrm. I think I'm heading back to Fry's, to ask if they have any MDR-V6s left for sale. I'm also trying to find somewhere local which sells Grado stuff -- I got an email back from the Grado website last night, giving me a phone number.... Those web forums are bizarre. Remarkable, how immersed folks can get in this topic. You'd think no one would need to own multiple pairs of headphones, beyond folks in the recording biz.... Rock on, Soderbergh! I don't own any Bo Diddley LPs, but I can remember seeing him play a moribund amusement park in the late '70's to an audience that comprised, aside from me and my friends, maybe 4 people who likely didn't have a clue who he was. My buds and I sat out the set; the others headed for the Salt and Pepper Shakers long before Mr. Diddley did all dat he do. I later married one of the people who lasted the full Bo show. I'm afraid I got the response I was expecting: No word on any warmup dates, which is why we took the mention of the possiiblity off the site - not sure if it was actually going to happen or not, and there's still no word on it, sorry. I hope they're not going to do secret warm-up gigs... is it really worth moving to Clerkenwell, drinking every night in the Three Kings just on the off chance..? In those Enderby books by Anthony Burgess, he uses "borborygm" (no 'us') to mean "fart". Onomatopoeic, I suppose. - - Mike PS I need hardly say I'm with James on 'judgement'. Beatles related news - The SBs have recorded Let Me Roll It for a Paul McCartney tribute album. jmbc 1.5 hours for Elvis/Sun....hmmmm - So that's the first recordings made by Rufus Thomas, B.B.
