I have to admit, I prefer the pans - they have much better writing, such as in this gig review: "A crazed little Angus Young disciple on lead guitar and grimaces, for instance, shares the stage with a defiantly passionless and abrasive black statue of a singer. They begin by chanting an absurd rhyme and staring blankly at the back of the hall. A good tactic -- it means they don't have to watch the crowd squirm uncomfortably and glance at their friends for clues on expected reaction." P.S. I'm confused), and _Kabuki_ (still haven't made up my mind on that one, but I do love the artwork). Bought the first three issues of _Zero Girl_ (Sam Kieth's latest series), which I'm really not sure about. That vaguely icky feeling I got all the way through _The Maxx_ is back and worse than ever, but I'll let it warm up before I make up my mind. From the pages of Eightball, he collects the serialized stories and releases them as trade paperbacks/graphic novels/your term of choice. "David Boring" was serialized in three issues/chapters of Eightball (#19-21). Further reading: If you want an hilarious commentary on comics and their creators, check out Clowes' "Pussey!" David Boring is a story that ran in issues 19-21 of Eightball. Kabuki is pretty but the story is ho hum. Strangers in Paradise is like a bad thirtysomething-esque tv series. Zero girl is just as icky as the Maxx Jason Wilson Brown - University of Washington - Seattle, WA "I don't speak fascist." -Grant Morrison ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 15:05:54 -0500 (EST) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: np: roxy music, stranded On Mon, 12 Feb 2001, Andrew D. I've spent $$ and reading time trying to see what the SIP fuss is about and was left with the same impression (and a couple of purchased, but left unread, TPB's.) The artwork is nice, but that's it. Below are the top candidates which catch my eye...any views? Sony MDR-V6 (an out-of-print model, but it's still available on the Web and lots of people seem to adore them...? I found a *demonstration pair* at a local electronics spot, and liked their feel...I'm not sure if the place actually had any for *sale*, though!) Sony MDR-V600 (sort of the replacement for the V6, and they seem to earn more mixed reviews) Grado SR-60 (*raves* about the sound quality all over the Web, and yet I'm concerned that there's SO much talk about how uncomfortable they are....) Sony MDR-V300 (probably lesser quality than the above three...not crazy about the small earpieces, either) I'm really wondering about the V-600, because my local Best Buy right now has an opened pair for half price ($50)! They won't be there for long -- should I dash back and grab 'em?? Any help is appreciated.... I have the MDR-V6 and still use them occasionally (mostly to answer the question, "what would this sound like on the MDR-V6?"). To my ears they add an unnatural sizzle to the highs, almost like an aural exciter. The pads are notorious for crumbling after a few years. I don't know...Kim & Andy look about 5'11" to me (based on the fact that they're about the same size as a friend of mine who claims to be 5'11"). Seems like Morris ought to be shorter but maybe that's 'cause he's usually sitting down. I don't remember him ever being the "premier drummer in popular music" though. Incidentally I remember a similar piece on the Beatles--questionaire style, I believe--which had John, Paul & George at 5'11" as well (Ringo a mere 5'8 or something). The only other thing I recall about it was that John disliked shaving. - -rUss ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2001 19:31:44 +1300 From: grutness@surf4nix.com Subject: Re: fegmaniax-digest V10 #40 >ps: My spell checker and paper-based dictionary both accept "judgement" as >a legitimate spelling. look in most reputable dictionaries and you will see that judgement is the recognised spelling everywhere in the world except the US, where judgment is the most used form. I hope I'm not too technical when I write this: "Closed-back" means that the headphone is sealed on the outside of the ear can. Most headphones these days are not of closed-back design- more like sieves than containers, to allow the listener to hear things happening in the room. This reduces the *M2RC ratio. As my place of vocational headbanging has plunged me into a considerable amount of migraine-producing tedia in the form of numerous, unblinking, sesquepedalien sessions at the computer, I decided to uncork some of my ancient musical pleasures. I have listened to many CD's, but aside from Crimson and Primus, who I think have something to do with music in its current state, I'm taking a rare prog diversion into ELP's boxed set and Chris Squire's _Fish Out of Water_ solo CD, which I bought as a Japanese import some years ago and didn't really listen to (I used to have the album when it was new- yes, I know that was before half of you were born.) I mostly enjoyed ELP. I say MOSTLY, because each time I was lured into a state of enjoyment they would put on something so beyond incredibly crappy that I would have to take my headphones off, change CD's, or jam sharp objects into my eyeballs. I'm really glad for yet more reasons now that I never sat through the movie _An Officer And A Gentleman_. As far as Chris Squire's CD was concerned, if I can ignore the "yessy" lyrics, I thoroughly enjoy the CD. It is mercifully short, which makes both listening and enjoying it possible. The recording could have been better, but I'm glad I have it. There truly is some magic to the sound of a picked Rickenbacker bass, no matter what tall bass-playing fegs might say.
