About the biggest name act to grace our happy stage has probably been John Hall of old Orleans fame (though I all can remember are those 80's ABC station breaks..."Still the One that'll blah blah blah, Still the One...") and a few old folky types like John Koerner. Anyway, Feb 6, 8pm...Victoria Williams along with hubby Mark Olson! I'm a tad thrilled here and just wanted to share. My wife and I were gonna go see Vic in Orlando on the 5th, but now we don't have to. Apparently John (KB owner) had sent away for an autograph and slipped in some info about the place, then he gets a call from the booking agent or whatever. John says he can't guarantee any money as Kool Beanz is just barely keeping one nostril above water. Conversation ends. Then a few days ago, they call up and say Vic wants to do it! Anyway, as I say, I'm happy. For those of you that know my wife Dianne, she may even get to open the show!! Okay, enough of that. Sorry for the long-overdue interruption. She started at KKGO in 1979 and went on to work for >> KCRW, KMET, KNX/FM and KLSX. Yeah...I heard this, but didn't think it would interest anyone outside Southern California. I guess you're posting this because of that A&M promotional 12" from years ago, with Deirdre interviewing Hitchcock? Either that, or because the story invoked the B-word. I never listened to the Beatles show, but I did listen to "SNAP" quite a bit during the mid/late '80s. It's somewhat ironic that she ended up with a nostalgic Beatles gig, because she actually had a notable hand in veering my own tastes from classic rock (including Beatles) toward more contemporary, alternative sounds. In fact, practically the first modern-alternative record I ever bought was This Mortal Coil's debut album, and this was directly due to hearing it on her show. I believe she also introduced me to Victoria Williams, Downy Mildew, Danielle Dax, Hugo Largo and maybe a couple of other artists who were important to me back then. The Jazz Butcher? Quite possibly. After awhile though, her gushy, unconditional-love manner became grating, and her jangle-pop tastes started to seem wimpy and reactionary. Once I gained more potent sources for info about the college-rock underground, she ceased to be useful to me. I had stopped listening to "SNAP," by the time it went off the air. Maybe other "SNAP" listeners outgrew her too, and that was why she had to switch to a safer, oldies format. Still, it's sad. And I wonder why there seems to be some secrecy about the cause? The Times printed a longer version of the above obituary, and it implied she's been having significant health problems since 1991. But, no further details. I wonder if she might have been at the recent Go-Betweens show I saw...that would've been right up her alley. Mmm, probably not. I think I would've spotted her.
