Have you actually heard the Dandy Warhols? I have their previous album and have seen them live, and both were great. I have liked all of PJ Harvey's previous stuff, but I just saw her live and the new material didn't thrill me, to say the least. And Eminem _didn't_ make you gag? I can't see how that could get on any critic's lists at all. From what I have heard/read, there is no musical quality whatsoever, just homo and femme-bashing, and even his voice is annoying to me anyway. Personally, the Dandy Warhol's always make me gag. They are the suckiest sucks that ever sucked. > And Eminem _didn't_ make you gag? I can't see how that could get on any > critic's lists at all. I havent heard the whole album, but what have heard is pretty good stuff. Any knocks on the musical quality would be old tired "it isnt music" slams of rap. Theres alot more to it than just femme and homo-bashing and most of those songs are done in some sort of character. As far as his voice well i can see where you are coming from on that one. At least 10 trees split right down the middle and two of them are 60+ year old pecans. One just missed my house on the way down and the other just missed my truck but caught the right side mirror. The powerlines are all out, taken down by falling trees and the road is nearly completely washed out. If I hadn't put those AT tires on the back, I would not have made it. The joys of rural living. I hope everyone has so far had a happy holiday. It hasn't been much fun here, but it could be a lot worse. Hell, I'm lucky just to have a house and a right side mirror to replace and a generator that I hope to get working tonight. The little struggles that most all of us occasionally deal with should help us appreciate even more how easy most all of us have it. gss ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Dec 2000 11:45:45 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: gag reflex >Have you actually heard the Dandy Warhols? I also saw the group live, once (opening for Supergrass). I think they're complete poseurs. The fans often sweat and strain to rationalize the band's phoniness -- oh yes, it's a self-aware send-up, blahblahblah -- but I ain't biting. Derivative hacks. I wouldn't call their music "unbearable" or anything like that, because it's well-produced and listenable. But it sure is trivial. >And Eminem _didn't_ make you gag? I can't see how that could get on any >critic's lists at all. From what I have heard/read "From what I have heard/read".... ;) I think Eminem has a load of flair and charisma, and does some really interesting things with point-of-view in his raps. His music doesn't quite win me over on a personal level, but I definitely have "professional respect" for his work. It sounds like he's a total asshole in his private life, but that doesn't mean he's untalented. And for the record, it isn't so much *Radiohead* which makes me gag, but just the overblown idolatry which follows the group. (Speaking of rationalization, just listen to the huzzahs for Kid A's "daring experimentation," etc.) Speaking of concerts, I also saw Radiohead once, when they opened for PJ Harvey. This was during the early "Creep" period. Now that they're so huge, I kinda wish I had paid better attention. I think I was standing in the back chatting with biz-weasels during most of their set.... (Hm...I probably should've had a "top 5 concerts" list in my previous "2000 in Review" blurb. Oops.) Cracker, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Elliott Smith, Laika, Amy Correia, Chris Knox, Richard Thompson.... But I think the top 5 would go as follows: 1. Brian Wilson (September 24, Hollywood Bowl) 2. The Who (August 14, Hollywood Bowl) 3. Supergrass (May 20, Viper Room) 4. Rufus Wainwright & the Oppressive Udders (November 29, Largo) 5. Eels (June 25, Roxy) Wire definitely would've made the list, if only the show hadn't been so damn short. And, of course, the most *fun* concert was undoubtedly Spinal Tap.... And I'm sure sorry that I missed seeing Oasis (again), Einsturzende Neubauten, Badly Drawn Boy and all-acoustic Beck. Stupid bonus list! Oh, the torture never stops.... Hey! Herman's Head was a great show. I loved its surrealism, cerebral humor and irreverence. IMO, it got cancelled way too quickly. It's one show -- along with Twin Peaks, Sports Night and maybe one or two others -- that wasn't allowed to run its full course. Cheers! - -g- "America's a great country isn't it?
