He was 76. Barty had been hospitalized in Glendale for heart problems and a lung infection, said his publicist, Bill York. Barty appeared in his first Hollywood feature in 1927 at the age of 3 and has performed for radio, television and on Broadway. He played a number of outrageous characters, including a wizard in the movie ``Willow'' (1988), a tongue-in-cheek role as a German spy in ``Under the Rainbow'' (1981) with Chevy Chase, and a suspected stalker in ``Foul Play'' (1978). In the late 20s and early 30s, he played Mickey Rooney's kid brother in the ``Mickey McGuire'' series of comedy shorts. He had several TV appearances, most recently in an episode of ``Frasier.'' In 1957, Barty founded Little People of America, an advocacy group for others with dwarfism. He later started a non-profit foundation that bears his name. Barty was injured in May when he fell of a motorized scooter onto concrete stairs, bruising his face and fracturing an eye socket. He had been using the scooter since undergoing hip surgery earlier in the year. Despite the injury, he said he was feeling alright. ``I feel good. I just look horrible,'' he told The Associated Press at the time. Barty in Millsboro, Pa., in 1924. A graduate of California State University, Los Angeles, received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater in 1995. He also had been appointed to the City Commission on Disabilities and the County Commission on Disabilities. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; a son; a daughter; and a granddaughter. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2000 10:30:00 -0500 From: "Disinformant" Subject: RIP Victor Borge http://uk.news.yahoo.com/001224/80/atg0v.html ________________________________ FS Thomas mailto:ferris621@earthlink.net (home) mailto:ferris@ochremedia.com mailto:ferris_thomas@mcgraw-hill.com (work) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2000 12:14:26 -0700 From: hbrandt Subject: ho-ho-ho The Waits performance on PBS last night was a real treat and reminded me of another Xmas ditty (alas, too late for Bayard's compilation) -- Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis - Tom Waits /hal, sad to hear of Billy Barty's demise ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2000 11:54:47 -0800 From: Asshole Motherfucker Subject: Re: wishing you all... well, eid is on either tuesday or wednesday. that's the big party- day to celebrate the end of ramadan. however, since it's based on lunar, rather than solar, cycles, ramadan begins (and ends) ten days earlier each year. so it's not really seasonal. just happens to coincide with the christmas stuff this year. and it also means ramadan will not as easy at it was this year for another thirty-five years. hmmm...any of you math wizard-types wanna figure out how often eid and christmas will fall on the same day? missed it by only two (or one) days this year.... is it the one i made a few years back? i think the only fegs i sent it to were quail and woj. don't consider myself an "artist" by any stretch, though. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2000 22:46:26 -0700 From: Eb Subject: [LIST] [ebmaniax-l] [Radiohead-bashing]... The L.A. Times published its critics' consensus of the year's top albums, today. Yup, Eminem won all right. [album titles skipped] 1. Eminem 2. Radiohead () 3. Shelby Lynne 4. PJ Harvey 5. U2 6. OutKast 7. D'Angelo 8. Emmylou Harris 9. The Dandy Warhols () 10. Jill Scott (I don't think I've heard Shelby Lynne, D'Angelo or Jill Scott at all.) In other news, I did a radio show today at my old college station. First time I've done one in about, oh, a year and a half? Only two hours, but it was a lot of fun. When I get a shorter slot, I usually have some semblance of "concept," and today's was half music from 1990, half music from 2000. Sort of a then-and-now deal, as the millennium passes. It ended up being a really poppy show, but that's OK -- I took 50 CDs to the station with me, and the 19 which I didn't get around to playing tended to be the more "ugly" or groove-based ones. I'd feel dorky posting my playlist (I did play Robyn's "Daisy Bomb"), but I'll send it to anybody who emails. Maybe I'll send my copy of the show to Bayard or one of the usual offenders, and they can tape-tree it. ;) Merry on ya, Eb PS I also saw the "Austin City Limits" repeat with Waits, last night...neat to finally see that. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Dec 2000 10:40:42 -0500 (EST) From: dmw Subject: Re: [LIST] [ebmaniax-l] [Qualified praise for Shelby Lynne]... The Shelby Lynne really isn't bad, in fact, if i were to make a list of my ten favorite major label releases this year, it might well be on it. (It wouldn't make my overall ten best, though.) I don't know a lot of the recording details, but it's intriguing in that while it was mostly recorded by a small core band, it *sounds* like an old-fashioned, lush, big studio record, gobs of strings (some of which are real, bonus points for that) and multi-layered backing vocals. the presence of real drums, or the absence of percussion, on most of the tracks is also appreciated; the handful of programmed tracks don't work nearly as well for me, but it should be well established by now that i'm a pretty serious "real-drum" snob. the guitars are often just a tiny bit messy -- a partly muffled string jangling here and there, a little 'chirp' on the changes -- in a way that's pretty engaging (and very human). it's also not padded -- the songs are in the 3ish - 4ish minute range and the disc is under forty minutes. most importantly the compositions ("life is bad" might take my top honors; "why can't you be?" is pretty good, too) sound more like songs than like calculated marketing excercises. they're written mostly by lynne and bill bottrell, her producer/primary acompanist, and they're nicely organic. they're also very much in-the-pocket, not the most memorable melodies you've ever heard, and nothing very surprising -- i think this record is primarily about its overall sound, feel, and groove. but the lyrics aren't embarrassing, which is a nice change of pace. and oh yeah, she's got a pretty good voice. minus points for using the ol' "sex sells" routine though. happy merry good etc., where applicable - -- d. - - oh no, you've just read mail from doug = dmw@radix.net - get yr pathos - - www.pathetic-caverns.com -- books, flicks, tunes, etc. = reviews - - www.fecklessbeast.com -- angst, guilt, fear, betrayal! = guitar pop ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V9 #379 *******************************
