I can't think of much in music I liked this year. I guess there were more disappointments than there were surprises. A few CD's I loved: 1Eurythmics-Peace (I don't care if it didn't come out this year... I heard it for the first time this year) 2- James Millionaires (Once again- I heard it for the first time this year) 3- Bunnymen-Avalanche (so it's an EP...I LOVED What are you going to do with you life) 4- Beautiful South- Painting it Red 5- Ian McNabb- A Political Party Broadcast on Behalf of the Emotional Party (Might I recommend this to Fegs who love acoustic music and amazing voices) That's it. That's all I can think of. The BORING meter is peaking for the following: XTC- What's up with one of my faves? BORING!!! Both new CD's put me to sleep. Radiohead-What's the fuss about? I can't sit through Kid A. That's not music U2- Dull. Just boring. Too little too late. I don't buy much music anymore. Phoenix doesn't have the used record stores that LA has, so I guess I try out less music. Thankfully there is Napster. Someone on this list mentioned Badly Drawn Boy's Campfire song was "pretty". Ah, now there is an adjective I dig in music. I'm downloading it right now, hoping it will truly be "pretty". I'll try The Shining after that. I really need some new artisits... Look, if anyone has any suggestions about bands that aren't afraid to be too "pretty" or "wimpy", I'd like to know. I'm tired of the Kid A nonsense. I'm looking for the perfect pop album. Terry Hall writes these really short CDs that always leave you wanting more. I've come to really respect that in an artist. It shows an incredible amount of restaint. In an age where you can put 80 minutes on a CD, we often get filler crap that would be better suited as non-CD tracks. Anyway. If you know of some wimp-pop bands, I'd like to hear about them!!!! Because there are quite a few people on this list I'm going to ask you to pick a date and a six hour time span on that date. This way any date can have up to four people guessing. The 'star wars' missile defense system don't fucking work and second even if it did work as envisioned, and it wouldn't stop the delivery of a nuclear weapon in the trunk of a car, in a train, in a truck, in ship or by any of the other unconventional methods of delivery and that should be the biggest fear we should have as far as that shit goes. The countries who have intercontinental missiles also have nuclear warheads for these missiles. We know when they are launched and from where. If some egghead somewhere sent one or 20 flying, the retaliation from our highly esteemed Democrat or Republican dominated government, or any other controlling body in the world whose country was targeted and who had the means would either wipe everything out or make us wish they had. That is unfortunate because like the old saying goes, 'don't fight fire with fire'. The best thing for any country to do in a highly unlikely situation like that, would be to do nothing and then try to recover. I think we should kill the democrats and republicans. Ok maybe not kill them, but use them as sex slaves and as semi-renewable energy sources. gss np-summertime, miles davis ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 11:48:50 -0700 From: hbrandt Subject: Re: The Good Dr Bayard wrote: > re. the Soft Boys Tour: "The good dr. hunter s. > thompson (bless him) will be supporting on most, if not all dates reading > & mc'ing the evenings activities." > > Cool, huh? When Iowa singer/songwriter Dan Bern smashed a perfectly good guitar onstage at Palookaville on Tuesday night, he drew some sharp words of discontent. While his game-but-rhythmically challenged fans kept getting lost in a sing-along about a wooden Jack Kramer tennis racket, Bern did a John McEnroe and shattered his Martin on the stage. Bern made jokes about turning the guitar into abstract art and tossed the neck into the crowd. The crowd murmured. ``You could have given that to someone who needed it,'' one woman yelled scornfully. ``That was a $1,000 guitar.'' ``Bern, you are a piece of work,'' said another. (Was that his manager?) Opening act Jim Page stomped out. Bern threw up his hands and appeared ready to call it a night. He ducked backstage, and a slightly subdued Bern returned with his backup ax and rolled through a lot of new material, and a surprising sing-along on his lyrically complex ``Jerusalem,'' in which the audience knew every nuance. And he solicited donations. ``If anyone has a nice Martin guitar in their basement they aren't using . . .'' You can still catch his act tonight at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, Friday at the Palms Playhouse in Davis and Saturday at Amaranta Gallery in Palo Alto. Long awaited, but nearly completed is the live concert video from the Grant Lee Hitchcock tour. I'm told that its being brought down from Seattle in a Ryder truck with a police escort as we speak. I'll keep ya posted on that one. Neat! I wonder which show(s) will constitute the video? East coast fegs: were any cameras in evidence for any of your performances? I'll let you know if I spot any Ryder trucks in my area. - -Michael Wolfe ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 15:59:37 -0500 From: "Thomas, Ferris" Subject: Attn: Mr. Quail "Ulysses" episode sells for 1.02 million pounds NEW YORK (Reuters) - An autographed manuscript of an important chapter of legendary Irish author James Joyce's novel "Ulysses" has sold for $1.5 million (1.02 million pounds) at Christie's in New York, the auction house said. The manuscript is an early, previously unknown draft of the "Circe" chapter of the 18-episode "Ulysses," which Joyce began as early as 1915. It was serialised from 1918 before being published for the first time in book form in Paris in 1922. A Christie's spokeswoman said the manuscript sold for $1.546 million -- above the pre-auction estimate of between $600,000 and $900,000. The price included the auction house's 10 percent commission. The spokeswoman said the identity of the buyer could not immediately be disclosed. The auction house said the manuscript consists of 27 large sheets, densely handwritten, with additions, corrections and deletions in the margin. The "Circe" episode narrates the nightmarish experiences of Leopold Bloom and Stephen Daedalus in the red-light district of Dublin. "Although Joyce's "Ulysses" is one of the most thoroughly studied works of modern fiction, almost no significant Joyce manuscripts have appeared on the market in some 25 years," Christie's manuscripts specialist Chris Coover said before Wednesday's auction. ______________________________________ Ferris Scott Thomas programmer McGraw-Hill Education 860.409.2612 ferris_thomas@mcgraw-hill.com (email) "We keep you alive to serve this ship, so row well... and live" - Ben Hur ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V9 #367 *******************************
