I just purchased a pair of McIntosh MC-30 amps. Their chassis are mint, one runs well within specifications, and the other needs its power transformer replaced. Anybody have recommendations on a shop to do this or good replacement transformers? Also, I'll need a pre-amp with a phono stage (I bought the MC-30s with a pair of McIntosh C-8s, but I intend to replace them). I'm considering buying an Fi Yph from Don Garber, but I've also had AudioNote, Cary, GAS, and Conrad-Johnson recommended. Anybody have any advice about these components? I am partial to Gerber's "low power, fast components" school of thought, tho. The amps will power a Lenco L-75 turntable (which is currently being refurbished, and will use an MC cartridge) and a run-of-the-mill Sony CD player. Ought to sound real nice and warm with the Yph and the MC-30s. I can also see a Rega CD player in my future, too. I have too many CDs not to invest in a decent CD player. It's amazing how quickly this hobby becomes expensive, but I do find it fascinating. "Music is art, hi-fi is engineering" I've heard it described as. I have no engineering aspirations whatsoever, but I absolutely adore the act of listening. I thought music fans were particular -- these audiophiles make music fans seem like petty amateurs in the hair-splitting arena. Ack. But I know the payoff is worth it, even if it takes me three years to get the system built. I'd love to hear other people's hi-fi stories. I've read all I care to on www.audioreview.co, but I haven't actually had conversations with people who share these interests. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 10:03:52 -0700 (PDT) From: John Barrington-Jones Subject: Fwd: how very...Robyn - --- Luther Gaylord wrote: > Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 10:24:30 -0600 > To: John Barrington Jones > From: Luther Gaylord > Subject: how very...Robyn > > Police Find Human Head Inside Giant Cod > > BRISBANE, Australia (Reuters) - Workers at an > Australian fish wholesaler > were shocked to find a human head inside a giant cod > they were preparing > for sale, police say. > > Police in Cairns in the far north of Queensland > state said the 97-pound > flowery cod was caught by a fishing trawler off > Townsville at the weekend > and had been delivered to the seafood wholesaler > before sale to the public. > > ``On preparing the fish they observed the remains > inside and contacted > police,'' detective sergeant David Miles told > reporters Tuesday. > > ``It was fairly big and the head appeared to be > fairly much intact inside > it,'' he said. > > Forensic tests were being carried out on the head as > police attempted to > identify the remains. > > Local media suggested the head could have belonged > to a trawler fisherman > missing after falling overboard about 31 miles off > Townsville early Sunday. > > Police said a search for the fisherman, 39-year-old > Michael Edwards of > Cairns, was called off after the discovery of the > head inside the 5.2-foot > fish. I don't know whether you're asking "will be in the UK in the near future" or "have made live appearances within the last few months," but the latter is certainly true. They were a hoot. So were the Go-Gos, though Belinda was bloody obnoxious (though still suspiciously hot). The show even made me finally like the Psychedelic Furs. Drew ===== Andrew D. I see that Sony just released a consumer oriented SACD player in Europe. It's actually less than the Rega Planet, so it might be a new contender in the "reasonably priced" CD player area. (Especially if it's anywhere near as good as the top end model, which has gotten uniformly great reviews). >It's amazing how quickly this hobby becomes expensive, but I do find it >fascinating. "Man, we haven't had that much trouble finding something juicy since the 'Weird Al' episode," VH1 senior vice-president Bill Flanagan said. "We can almost always hit paydirt with a band's groupies, but in They Might Be Giants' case, they're all 31-year-old computer programmers." The They Might Be Giants episode largely focused on keyboardist/accordionist John Linnell's harrowing early-'90s addiction to Tetris. ===== "Life is just a series of dogs." -- George Carlin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
