I know the U.S. system is far different from Canada's ... but I was wondering if the above might be true for both Canadian and U.S. citizens. Also, does everyone seek out and use their voting privileges, or not. *I* know some people who don't even bother registering, because the process has become: "voting to make sure "the bad guy" doesn't get in" ... and lots of Canadians are fed up with that whole process. I've always noticed (that it seems) that there are fewer people per capita that vote in the U.S.A. (compared to Canada) ... is it my imagination? is it a cultural difference? do you feel that one vote won't change the outcome in any way? ... or is it that one can't be bothered? I may be talking to a group of people who all vote and take that right very seriously ... but maybe someone can offer me some insight as to the grand scheme of things. I don't mean to bring politics to the list, so feel free to respond privately :-) Btw - is it *really* true that the Soft Boys are going to make a new record? ... because wow ... i find that pretty damn cool too! fading back into yesterday before tomorrow comes, Randi *what scares you most will set you free* ~ robyn hitchcock *and the longer you hide ... the more you deny* ~ neil finn *acting steady always ready to defend your fears* ~ aimee mann *when I've got nothing left I find I've got it all* ~ michael penn ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 01:39:14 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: mostly non-robyn related - voting related *twofangs/randi* & ~tjf/tim~ wrote (a big out of order): > I don't mean to bring politics to the list, so feel free to respond > privately :-) yeah, because that never happens on this list... nosirree.... > Now, I must ask something about the forthcoming U.S. election; > do you vote for the candidate you like, > or do you vote to make sure a candidate you _do not like_ *does > not* get in? honestly, it depends on how close the election looks like its going to be, whether or not there even _is_ a candidate i like, a lot of different factors. i admit that if going into the last weekend before the election, if it looks like bush could win california (i assume you know that we have this bizarre (and byzantine) electoral college system that makes our presidential votes indirect; if not, there has to be a site that makes it comprehensible) i might chicken out and vote for gore, and then look for a bucket to puke into for several hours, just as i did in the CA gubernatorial race in 1990 (when dianne feinstein lost to the mega-ultra-evil-venal pete "makes gw bush look like a genuine statesman" wilson) even though i don't particularly like feinstein (now a senator). i cast my vote for clinton in 92, but that was definitely a vote against bush sr. on the other hand, in 96 i voted for ralph nader for president, and that was definitely a vote FOR him. same with voting for dan hamburg for CA gov in 98. > I know the U.S. system is far different from Canada's ... but I was > wondering if the above might be true for both Canadian and U.S. > citizens. > > Also, does everyone seek out and use their voting privileges, or not. > > *I* know some people who don't even bother registering, because the > process has become: > "voting to make sure "the bad guy" doesn't get in" > ... and lots of Canadians are fed up with that whole process. > > I've always noticed (that it seems) that there are fewer people per > capita that vote in the U.S.A.
