For political reasons I'd feel uncomfortable about flying the Confederate 'southern cross' though (which an appaling number of people think was the CSA flag...) Furthermore, it was not called the "Stars and >Bars" at the time. hang on... did I get all that wrong before in my last message? When I said I flew the stars and bars, I meant just that - three horizontal stripes red-white-red, with a blue canton containing a circle of seven white stars. That is the stars and bars, and was the flag of the CSA. The 'rebel flag' is the Southern Cross, used by IIRC one Tennessee regiment and the CSA navy - - this has a blue saltire (X) edged in white, containing 13 stars. It was based on an earlier flag, which was identical other than being square and bordered in white. This is usually referred to as the ANV Cross (referred to above as 'the army's version'). The Stars and Bars was used until (IIRC) about 1863, when its similarity to the USA flag brought it into disuse. Several flags were used after that time, notably the Stainless banner. BTW - a friend of mine of African-American descent once got angry with me when he noticed that I had a CSA "Southern Cross' flag in my collection - until I showed him that the same box of flags also included a Garvey UNIA flag... Don't worry, you had it right. A vast number of Americans get it wrong, though; most people here seem to think that "Stars and Bars" refers to the "rebel flag," and assume that the rebel flag was the national flag of the Confederacy. I didn't write my, umm, flag post to correct anyone in particular on this list; in fact I hadn't even received your message by the time I sent it. Heh. I'm originally from one of the more urban areas of Alabama and spent what they call my "formative years" in the South. I don't think this makes me an authority, but I'll say that I agree that (a) no matter how catchy you might find them downhome backwoods ballads (nobody loves that shit more than hip city folk, in my experience) or charming and homespun those quilts or tasty the iced tea, you're apologizing for a culture where diversity (and evolution) is anathema in the name of "cultural diversity," which I think is without merit; and also that (b) "redneck pinheads" exist in every part of the country and were much worse in central New York where I went to high school and college than they were where I lived in the South; and also that (c) hip urban folk can be bigoted, small-minded pinheads too. It's a delight to be discovering (c), in a cynical way. I always suspected it but I reserved judgement till now. > While I appreciate some of the > same > rural traditions and folklore that you pointed out, I can definitely see > that -- amongst my kissing cousins, at least -- there's a dangerous > mindset filled with hate, paranoia, homogeneity, and close-mindedness > that > I feel isn't healthy to cultivate or celebrate as "cultural diversity". A-fucking-men. If the South has a saving grace, it's not that rural traditions and such are wonderful things that we should appreciate, perhaps trading beads for or some such, but that, as someone pointed out, the stereotypes are simply that. The region is brimming with intelligent, educated folk (as well as rich folk in mansions -- just like before the Civil War, I guess) who resent the stereotyping and are as -- what? modern? -- as the rest of us. Wacky music news of the day: ADD N TO (X)'s "Add Insult to Injury" smells like... GRASS. In conjunction with the upcoming release of Add Insult to Injury by ADD N TO (X), Mute Records will release a special limited edition version which will smell like freshly cut grass. This will be made available on CD and vinyl. Both formats will also contain a page of stickers. The band wanted to add an olfactory element to the visual and aural elements of the album. The synthesized smell concept involves something unnatural from something natural. This supports the common concepts the band explores in their music: the natural world vs. man vs. the machine. The band believes each song has its own landscape, its own psycho-geography.
