Well, at the River Lea(e) outing, he went straight in with the vocal after a 2-chord intro which sounded exactly like the opening of the Byrds "All I really wanna do". No 'service is perfect pain' or anything like that. - - Mike Godwin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 08:55:45 -0700 (PDT) From: Vivien Lyon Subject: just another persistent misunderstanding - --- Ken Kenster wrote: > <>come on. that's the worst symptom of "late capitalism" you > can > >possibly think of? > > No, I was responding to Vivien's statement.> > > yeah, but you compared it with the worst symptoms of a > totalitarian system. That tenacious little meme just won't lay down and die, will it? Just to clarify, for all two people who are even still awake at this point, I used Coke v. Pepsi, Britney v. N'Sync etc. as examples that the media artificially limits our choices, not that our choices are actually limited to two similar things. It was supposed to be the equivalent of the media offering us only two presidential candidates when in fact there are at least four people running for president. In no way were the items listed meant to illustrate the perils of late capitalism- it is the winnowing away of perceived choices that is a major peril of late capitalism. So there. Hello! some of you will remember the "spoken word tape" project. With the advent of mp3, there really is no need to confine this to a cassette tape, eh? I was thinking we could change it to a "spoken word page" on the web. i have plenty of space for this and i think it would be really supercool. also, almost all the people listed on the spoken word page have left the list (or at least changed email addresses.) Those who trade on md, cdr or mp3 could send sound clips direct to me. what do you think? for those going "huh?", read here: http://www5.palmnet.net/~mrrunion/wordtape.htm =b ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 14:06:39 +1200 From: digja611@student.otago.ac.nz Subject: Re: fegmaniax-digest V9 #226 >>Are the NZ media full of this drivel too? a fair deal - the Republican conference got big coverage, and there was a news article on Leberman the other day. Are these real headlines or New York Post headlines? Anyway, the butler wasn't drunk, was he? - -rUss PS Bet you've never seen a crazier headline than "49ers Beat A's"...Someone I know actually came up with that after skimming an article about a San Francisco/Oakland football game. Somehow that made it to print in whatever paper she was working for at the time. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 22:36:18 -0700 From: "Russ Reynolds" Subject: Re: Rush > After reading Vince's post yesterday evening, I went home and played > Rush's _2112_ for the first time in years. Who else did likewise? I tried to but I looked all over and couldn't find a single Rush recording in my house. My introduction to Rush came when I was in college and the goons in the dorm next to mine used to blast that crap every day. I showed them, though. I blasted Queen's "News Of The World" right back at them. Later, when I worked as a DJ for a rock station I gained a mild appreciation for Rush. It sure beat the hell out of Foreigner, Ozzy and Def Leppard. You can gain an appreciation for just about anything if you play it right alongside Foreigner, Ozzy and Def Leppard five nights a week. Once when I was filling in for the morning guys I went to the door to let a guest in while playing track 3 of the "Roll The Bones" CD. As fate would have it the security pad malfunctioned and I got locked out of the studio. By the time someone finally showed up to let me back in the CD was halfway through track 10. I gained a reputation among our listeners as a huge Rush fan that day. - -rUss (echoing with the sound of salesmen) PS: Bay Area Rush fans will want to tune in to 98.5 KFOX some time around August 23 when we get to the X section of "The Classic Rock Experience A to Z". PSS: I like Robyn Hitchcock way better than Rush. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 17:41:37 -0700 (PDT) From: Carole Reichstein Subject: This is what while ostensibly working at the bookstore Hey, I just discovered something interesting. Please ignore me if you guys know all about it. So here I am at work, trying to find a picture of a pull fire alarm so I could update the safety map here at Powell's Technical Books. Yeah, big whoop, but hang on. I wasn't having any luck with "Yahoo," so a coworker turned me on to the AltaVista search engine. Look to the left-hand bar, and click on "Multimedia: Images" in order to look for a graphic. So, I found my pull fire alarm in no time flat. Hmmm..what else could I find? I typed in "Simon Le Bon." Lots of 1984 pictures showed up. What a hoot! Well, the obvious next one to type in was "Robyn Hitchcock." And up came several 1984 pictures as well. Including this one: http://w1.498.telia.com/~u49803144/bilder/rh.htm Hmmm! Is that guy on the saxophone Matthew Seligman? Fegs, please forgive me if you already know all the AltaVista image archive, but *I* just found it and it's a gas! xxx Carole ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V9 #228 *******************************
