Do you like how they call it "illegal material" even before it's distributed? And at what point is it "manufactured"? I mean, I understand that you have to manufacture a real pressed CD, but is burning a CDR "manufacturing"? How many do you have to burn at a time to become a "bootleg manufacturer"? It's so much hooey. The association says that hundreds of millions of dollars are lost annually through the various forms of bootlegging, and this new technique should add to that total. Yeah, they've lost millions of dollars to boots. Forget the fact that boots are used primarily by people who already have all the "official" material (i.e. hardcore fans). As if people get boots and then DON'T get the album. Lost sales, my ass. Although I never did get around to responding, I very much appreciated the input! :) As to the other films... > "Brazil" I've heard such good things about this movie, and it really failed to live up to the hype. It was a boring re-hash of a hundred tired sci-fi cliches. There were a few funny moments (the funniest of which being when the waiter *demanded* that the patron say the number of the entree that he was ordering), and Gilliam certainly knows how to create and control the mood of his films, but overall this flick just didn't work for me. Maybe I was just in a pissy mood when I watched it, but I was really expecting to be wowed; I wasn't. 1 star (out of 4). > "Blood Simple" I elected not to watch this one. I'm going to wait until the "Director's Cut" is released on video. > "Your Friends and Neighbors" This was enjoyable and also had a few funny moments. I'd recommend it in a pinch, but it's nothing to rave about (certainly not worthy of the lavish praise heaped on it by Roger Ebert). It's from the same director who gave us "In The Company of Men", which was a much better film, IMO. I thought Jason Patric's performance was excellent. 2 stars. > "Mission: Impossible" I hate action movies, but I always liked the old M:I television shows, and since everyone on earth has seen this flick, I figgered I'd better see it. I was pleasantly surprised. The plot was engaging and, although Tom Cruise can't act, DePalma's direction made a really good film out of this. Perhaps I liked it more than I should have because I was expecting to hate it, but I give 3 stars anyway. Fun stuff. > "12 Monkeys" Again, Gilliam sure knows how to create mood. The first part of the film felt contrived, but as the story progressed everything fell into place nicely. Well-produced, if not superbly written. The ending, of course, was terrific. Bruce Willis is always fun to watch. 3 stars. > "Kingpin" This movie sucked wanker. 1 star, and that only because of the scene wherein Woody Harrelson's character had sex with his nassssssty landlady. > "BASEketball" This movie isn't listed above, but I did rent it, and I laughed my ass off. I never thought this movie looked good, but I was always just a little curious about Stone and Parker, so I gave it a shot, and I'm glad I did. It suffered in a few spots from Zucker's trademark overkill, but Stone and Parker brough a hilarious subtlety to their roles and saved this from being another in the long line of Zucker-comedy duds. I'll probably buy this one. 3 stars. Subject: In defense of Oliver Stone Salvador-Good movie for a first try Platoon-At times it seemed he tried too hard, but overall a great flick. Excellent casting, and a Stone maistay = always getting good performances out of his actors. Johnny Depps first movie, and we can't forget Keith Richards. Born on the 4th of July-Stone even mangles Tom Cruise into some decent acting, though Willem Defoe rocked in this one. Talk Radio-We've talked this one to death. Heaven and Earth-Tommy Lee Jones did his 10th movie of that year, and even looked convincing. Great story, and it ended Stones Vietnam Trilogy. Wall Street-Once again, great casting, and great story. Nixon-What? A foreigner playing Nixon? Plodding, dull story, but it was a passion of Oliver Stone, so forgive him ; ) The Doors-Val Kilmer scared the shit out of me. I could've sworn it was Jim, and Val did a lot of his own singing on the soundtrack. Not bad at all. JFK-A lot to swallow in just 3 hours. Stone brings about every conspiracy there is, and gives Kevin Bacon and John Candy a hand at *acting*. Magic bullet my ass. Natural Born Killers-Best movie in the world, and it made me fall in love with Juliette Lewis. oh, and to the wag who sent me a barb about that, see Cape Fear, and you'll see why Lewis received an Oscar nomination at age 16. Any Given Sunday-dark, depressing. this was one movie of Stones that I did not appreciate, and I'm even a football fan. Of course, good performances all around, but still, yeeeeesh.
