"Goodbye to Love" is my favorite, too. I don't own any Carpenters records (unless you count the A&M tribute album), but they had some (*some*) good material and KC's voice sure was purty. I also like "Close to You," "Yesterday Once More," "Rainy Days & Mondays".... I almost like "Superstar" a lot, except there's one bit which just drives me up the wall: that one line in the chorus, where the songwriter just decided "F*ck, I can't think of another line! Maybe she can just sing 'Baby, oh baby!' a bunch of times." Only McCartney's "My Love" ("whoa wo-whoa whooooa") rivals it for sheer verbal laziness. ;) Eb np: The Doors/Essential Rarities ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 14:57:09 -0500 From: Gene Hopstetter Subject: Re: The real problem with MP3... > From: Stephen Buckalew > > I may be forever lambasted for defending the Carpenters on this list, but > so be it.... > Not quite -- I'm a fan of the Carpenters, and the Carpenters Phenomenon, in particular. I've got two made-for-tv movies about them on tape, one or two of their video collections (but I do not have a copy of Todd Haynes' "Superstar", tho.) Ray Coleman's book "The Carpenters: The Untold Story: An Authorized Biography" is a good read, too. As a matter of fact, I was listening to the "Close to You" album when I read the post. That's good stuff. It may make me look old, but I enjoy the Carpenters quite a bit -- their attention and dedication to songwriting, arranging, recording, show business -- is something woefully lacking in today's pop music, IMNSHO. But, granted, I cringe whenever I hear their recording of "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft." Abysmal, but hilarious. Thank you oh so much for that one, Klaatu. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 13:02:53 -0700 From: Natalie Jacobs Subject: Bagge, continued > He's talking about "YEAH!", a kiddie comic about an all-girl rock band > who are only popular on other planets. He said that he wrote it with his seven-year-old daughter in mind, which meant that it was aimed at a totally non-existent audience: little girls who frequent comic book shops. (This got a big laugh.) > Again, I say...Resurrect Stinky. Problem solved. :) In the screenplay treatments of "Hate" he's been trying to write, he said he always resurrects Stinky.
