I saw them once before awhile back, but I'd like to see them again, now that they have three albums instead of just one. Especially since the new one is my favorite of the three. Check it out, if you haven't. It was a commercial disaster, naturally.... Since listbiz is dead slow beyond set-list and "where's Randi?" threads, I'll toss out a weenie question with a bit more juice than the norm: What rare, out-of-print albums are at the top of your frustrated "search" list, which you can't find anywhere? I was making a mental list the other day, and came up with the Bats/Compilately Bats (now out of print in the States, though it's available as a pricey import), three Mrs. Miller albums (Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing, The Country Soul of Mrs. Miller and Will Success Spoil Mrs. Miller?), Dinosaur's self-titled debut, the T. Rex album titled simply "T. Rex" (I believe it came directly before Electric Warrior?), the Electric Prunes' Underground, the Hollyridge Strings' Beatles Songbook Vol. 2 (heh) and any of the four Dome albums (they're apparently available as import two-fers, but I've never seen them in a store). The early Snakefinger albums on Ralph would be great to find, too (especially Chewing Hides the Sound). You? Heck, maybe you'll name something which someone else on the list can tape and/or burn.... Speaking of annoyingly out-of-print albums, I just read in the L.A. Times that Rhino Records is reissuing Brian Wilson's 1988 solo debut in September, with *11* bonus tracks. Great! Well, yes! Good on ya, Eb. It reminds me... I've been searching for a compilation CD by O-Level ("A Day in the Life of Gilbert and George", I believe it's called) for bloody ages. It's Ed Ball stuff, pre-Television Personalities, and was released by Creation or Rev-Ola in the UK sometime in the early 90s. But, obviously, it's vanished now. They probably only pressed two copies or something. Anyone who can give me information leading to the capture of said CD will gain a reward of $50,000. * - -- Matt Browne *: Or a Matt Browne World Domination Committee sticker. I'm still trying to find Jodie Foster's Army - The Blatant Localism EP. I've seen it on Crack-Bay, but I'm not about to pay $50.00 for a 10 minute EP. And yet I still have yet to see it on Napster. Go figure. It was released once upon a time on CD (wow!), kind of as filler at the end of the Valley of the Yakes album. I wouldn't mind seeing Bill Nelson's entire back catalogue reissued. You'd think that his affiliation with Discipline Global would facilitate that???? Oh well. It'd be nice to see Bill Nelson's "Getting the Holy Ghost Across" come out on CD someday. I have the vinyl of it, one day I'll get around to burning it on CD for my listening enjoyment. I also want the Stranglers - Raven album. It probably still costs like $25-30 bucks to get it on cd now, right? ugh. Why isn't that stuff available in the states??? It is tons better than Feline, or any other Stranglers stuff I see in the bins here. It took me forever to find Black & White on cd. That was quite a find-- found it at Jelly's on Oahu. Where are all the set-list threads Eb is talking about?? There's like three or four shows that have gone completely undescribed! That's unheard of on this list. :) =jbj= ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jun 2000 16:47:10 +1200 From: digja611@student.otago.ac.nz Subject: Re: fegmaniax-digest V9 #167 >>>hang on, how many folks have already been inducted total? there are >>>five or six folks on that list that i'm shocked aren't in already, >>>probably topped by reed and smith, though i would've thought parsons' >>>'beautiful corpse' status would've got him in in an LA minute, too. >> >> the velvet underground was inducted in '96. i'm going to see mr. >> reed tonight. check out the complete list: > >patti smith wasn't eligible to be inducted until this year. the only >thing that works in her favor in terms of a quick induction is that >clive davis would probably support it. and you forget: and LA minute >lasts around 5-7 years, depending on your waiter.. It wasn't an entirely pleasant trip, to be honest, for several reasons, but there were many bright spots. Both shows were great, all the fegs were and are splendid people, Grant Lee Phillips not only knows who Thoth is but even knows his Egyptian name (Tehuti), and Mt. St. Helens remained dormant. Oh, and I kicked Tom's ass with aikido. No, hang on, I didn't. Other folks can describe the shows in greater detail, but I must emphasize that Grant was terrific - as good as I remember from seeing him back when I was in college - and very funny as well. He was thoroughly tanked at the Seattle show, but fortunately he's a happy drunk. I was also impressed by Robyn's unexpected physicality, particularly the hilarious improvisational mime during "Ashes to Ashes." I saw a lifelong dream fulfilled by witnessing live performances of "Flavour of Night," and more importantly, "Kung Fu Fighting"! Scott McCaughey looks even more like a Muppet than Kimberley Rew, but was less entertaining. I didn't get to buy a T-shirt, but I did buy Grant's record from the friendly British merch lady (possibly the person who runs the British incarnation of the Museum of RH). Viv and Jeme played it in the car on the way home, but I was comatose and couldn't offer an opinion on it. I'm still pretty tired, but recovering. Thanks to the providers of transportation (Eddie, Jeme, and the Seattle transit system), Michael for showing me around the U district, Simone for offering to let me sleep on her shoulder during the show, and all the other fegs, large and small. n. p.s. You have to approach him in the right humor, or spirit, or something. Some of his stuff sounds totally tossed off, and bad ("Bad Jazz," "Hong Kong Blues"), some of it is the same totally lovely backing track with new vocals ("Man's Tight Vest" = "Alison"), and some is just tiny and terrific. _Ugly Beautiful_ is (usually) a great introduction, but a little time spent with the earlier albums it picked and slicked from shows you how much fun the man can be in four tracks. But he's not for everybody. Drew ===== Andrew D. Simchik, schnopia@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get Yahoo!
