Can we cut in line with all the early Fegs? We probably won't be able to get to the Aladdin super-early, unfortunately. Thanks! Carole ------------------------------ Date: 23 Jun 2000 06:32:20 -0700 From: "John Barrington Jones" Subject: From today's Oregonian (RH content) Songwriters on the same stage, but not by accident Grant-Lee Phillips, formerly of the brilliant rock/Americana band Grant Lee Buffalo, and British eccentric Robyn Hitchcock both are distinctive singer-songwriters with devout cult followings, and they're friends whose performing paths have crossed often. So it's fitting that they would team up for a short tour together. "We've wound up onstage together so many times by accident," Phillips said recently by phone. "It seemed high time to make it official." Unofficially, what they're doing is exporting a little taste of one of America's hippest clubs. Largo, a small Los Angeles hot spot, has gained a reputation as an experimental haven where some of pop's most creative figures (perhaps most notably the multitalented Jon Brion, who's best known for producing Fiona Apple's latest) test-drive new material in a friendly, freewheeling atmosphere. Phillips, a longtime regular, has taken part in imporomput musicmaking there with Hitchcock, Elliott Smith, Crowded House's Neil Finn and others. "It's a comfortable room, because the people are sitting down, and those that want to talk and mingle are usually outside," he says (and he almost could be referring as well to the Aladdin Theater, where he'll play Friday). "But it's also a room that's filled other performers, so that kind of raises the bar. It's king of a loose environment, and the folks who really blossom there are the ones who're willing to fly by the seat of their pants and just engage the moment." In this instance, he'll have to engage Hitchcock, too, as the two are learning some of each other's songs for the show. "Which is always interesting, becasue I have to check with Robyn," he notes. "I'll have to ask him, like: Are you singing 'ice cream pants'? (Affects British accent): 'Oh, no. Ice cream _hands_.' Then you talk about the girl's legs? 'No, no. _Eggs_, it's her eggs.' The path of least resistance may be entirely wrong in this case. I'm looking forward to it, though. It's always inspiring to move within Robyn's bubble." 8 pm Friday, Aladdin Theater, 3017 SE Milwaukee Ave: $13.50 advance, Ticketbastard, 503-224-4400. -Marty Hughley ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 21:12:05 -0400 From: johann johann Subject: Re: Unscrupulous capitalism... when we last left our heroes, matt sewell exclaimed: >found this whilst cruising evilbay... > >http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=365322220 > >anyone else think this is a bit out of order? the usual modus operandi on tori-boot (i'll fill in the insult to save you the post, Eb) when someone is auctioning off a tori amos cd-r is to e-mail the bidders letting them know that there are a lot of people out there more than happy to trade them copies of said bootleg for nothing more than the cost of postage and media. also, i'm pretty sure ebay has a ban on auctioning cd-r. hmmm. yep: i'm not a registered ebayite (and, thus, can not get the address of the bidder(s)), so perhaps someone who is would like to do so? woj n.p. the apples in stereo -- the discovery of a world in side the moone ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 22:48:03 -0400 From: overbury@cn.ca Subject: Re: What? I've got Bitches Brew, so it's not that I don't know what I'm talking about, and I know it was labeled "fusion" and that jazz and rock were the two elements of that music, but it still sounds to me like rock sounds being used within a framework that is still very much jazz. I'd feel just as odd about Chicago being nominated for the jazz hall of fame. Chicago incorporated jazz elements into the rock music they made, and Davis incorporated rock elements into the jazz music he made. At least that's the way it sounds to me. > > This reminds me of why I never set up an "Ambient" category in my CD > collection - I didn't want to split up my Eno. Grant & Robyn are the yin and yang of folk rock. They are the vaudevillian heroes of our time. I wish I had a setlist for you, but I don't. I saw Eddie taking notes though, so hopefully he'll post tonight's setlist AND the sweetwater one soon. Sad to say, but from tonight and what I've seen and heard, all the sets are pretty much identical with slight variations here and there. So, go look at the GAMH setlist, and you'll have an almost spot-on idea of the show. There was an improv song tonight about the State of Maryland. And Grant Lee did some great impressions: Casey Kasem, Willie Nelson. I taped, but wasn't in "conscientious taper" mode. I had a crappy side change, and brought a 100min tape to a 120 minute concert. But Eddie, Michael Keefe, and Michael Wolfe all were seen with taping gear, and those level lights were blinking. It was great to finally meet Chris Franz and Tom Clark, and great to see Cynthia Peterson again!! I wish we all could've hung out more either before or after the gig.
