He's generally reverent when playing covers ("Visions Of Johanna", "Caroline Says", "Wolfpack" etc.), but what's wrong with Robyn having fun with lines like "Ashes to ashes/funk to funky/we know Major Tom's a junkie..." ? Let's hope Robyn never writes a "sequel" to one of his own songs. > the new album by Dogstar (yes, Keanu Reeves plays > bass). The walls are layered with endless strata of stickers. My friend said, "I put a sticker up a month ago and it's still here!" I said, "I don't think any sticker has ever left this place." I arrived just in time to see "Glass Flesh II" contributors Marshmallow Coast, who are basically Of Montreal with a different singer. I was impressed by his finger-picking. They were pretty good in a cute 'n' cuddly kind of way. The Minders were great, as usual, though they played exactly the same setlist as at the Elliott Smith show, which was a bit of a bore. I desperately want to give Martyn Leaper a haircut. A few more inches and he's going to start looking like Brian Eno circa 1974. Some drunk, air-guitar-playing dudes in the front row made Martyn laugh in the midst of a "serious" song. These guys continued their air-guitar-playing, devil-horn-sign-making, sing-alongs, and "conducting" throughout the show. Of Montreal put on a surprisingly good show. They can make a lot of noise for a bunch of cutsey-poo doofuses - they're also really tight and good musicians, and pulled off the de rigeur instrument-switching shtick without a hitch. The bassist bobbed his head a lot and seemed to be grooving in his own little world, which was fun to watch. Their set was a sampling from all their albums, plus an entertaining sprinkling of goofy skits and props. The audience was *very* enthusiastic - the highlight of the show was the spontaneous mass singalong at the end of the epic tale of "Nickee Coco and the Invisible Tree." Good clean fun. Due to weariness and lack of enthusiasm, I only passed out about half my Thoths. Marshmallow Coast guy Andy Forrester did not know who Thoth was! Obviously he is not a serious Robyn scholar! I was most pleased by a compliment from David Barnes, the guy who does Of Montreal's cover art, as he is a professional artist (sort of). Nothing else exciting happened. At this point, I would like to refute LJ's long-ago charge that Of Montreal are "ugly." Admittedly, they aren't the most attractive folks in the world - - singer Kevin Barnes looks like the love child of Laura Carter and Peter Tork - but they're no more ugly than any other band I've seen. In fact, the drummer was rather cute. If you wanna see a truly ugly band, have a gander at Elf Power... or better yet, don't. :) Next up: Robyn on Friday! Whee! n. So, with all of the hubbub of Abba and Claudine Longet media coverage, you may have missed out on the fact that a certain beeplus artist is performing on the western coast de los estados unidos. I'm guessing that Robyn really likes to play with Grant Lee because he had the best time I've ever seen him have on stage. Most of this was infectious last night at the Great American Music Hall in San Fran. That said, if I were in "humbug mode" I probably wouldn't have had such a good time. He played a setlist of mostly things I'd heard him do before. The exceptions were the covers and he did Trams of Old London and Sleeping Knights of Jesus. Yea, I've heard him do them, but rarely. On a humbug note: I really like Queen Elvis but he doesn't have to do it every time I see him. I wonder if the last time I saw him do a full set without it was before it was written. Maybe it is just California that makes him do that song? Things I noticed about the show: Hard to tell how good GLP's songwriting is, as stylized mumbling is such a big part of his presentation. It was a little annoying. Those songs I did hear well didn't knock me over. He applied a samey treatment to each of his own songs. I thought Grant Lee displayed excellent playing skills, though I wanted him to actually play the piano and not just tinker with it (he clearly knows what he's doing, but maybe hasn't worked out real piano parts for the songs on which he played.) I think he is vocally and musically very skilled and talented. He blends his voice very well behind Robyn's. I think GLP did a very respectful and wonderful job backing up Robyn, and I think Robyn didn't add quite as much when backing GLP. Grant was very funny. Hysterical when doing a Robyn Hitchcock impression. Robyn's jumbo Larivee guitar had a monster bass, but was a little mushy in the lower mids. It was a beautiful guitar, however. I kinda wish he'd use a Taylor, Collings, or Santa Cruz grand auditorium or maple jumbo guitar and let me EQ the board. Robyn's voice seems to be holding out well, considering that he's jamming a bunch of gigs together on successive nights like some sort of road warrior or other silly post-apocalyptic movie. Robyn Hitchcock is as "white" dancing as Steve Young ever was. I think he knows this and it is part of his own brand of, er, sophisticated comedy. Nick and I will get to copy those steps and body movements for Glen's wedding unless bribed significantly. "Fgz": It was marvelous meeting up with the cast of 20, or so, wonderful feggy persons. Some of the usuals didn't make it and were missed, but we still managed to have a great time. Tom, Nick, Glen, Carol, Randi, Jeme, Viv, Cynthia, Steven "Michael" "David," Eddie, Chris, Sydney, Susan, Doug, Dan, etc. (sorry if you fell into "etc."- I'm just shocked that I could remember this many names) may be some of The Great Quail's laboratory accidents but yer all great. I have come to the realization that despite having what I think to be massive success in cultivating friendships in real life, I met something like half of my favorite people through this list. All in all, I found it to be a very enjoyable show. I don't know if I could have had a bad time hanging out with great fegs, watching very likeable guys who also happened to be having a great time. Maybe my humbug chip is broken. I feel that I must blame Eddie. Hope to see a bunch o' ya tonight.... Mark, in general I agreed with all of your comments regarding the show last night. Just wanted to offer a differing opinion on Grant Lee. I'd never really heard the man's music before last night, unless you count a couple of campy numbers from the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack. I was really impressed. It's probably not music I would have come to any other way -- stylistically it's not my usual bag -- but I was floored by the passionate delivery. On the whole I felt that he contributed a real emotional undertow to the evening, and the alternation of his kind of swooning songs with Robyn's more upright "clever" songs worked very well. I'll agree that they didn't immediately distinguish themselves from one another, but several of them were very memorable to me. I don't at all regret shelling out $15 for the 30-minute CD. It's actually not nearly as good on plastic (what does one call CD material? it's not vinyl...?) as it was live, IMO, though. I love Grant Lee's voice and guitar playing and while I had reservations about the pairing at first I'm now thrilled, and I can't wait to see them tonight. Incidentally, it was terrific to meet so many prominent fegs for the first time! I decided not to try and play guessing games at the Edinburgh Castle, so I ended up standing near the front of the stage looking at these people who all looked pretty familiar, trying to think of a secret password-type question to ask that would test my hunch. But before I could do it, Jeme beat me to it with the clever and cryptic question, "Are you Andrew?" Well, after a minute's thought I realized that I probably was, and there we were. Stipe fan, i'm used to that :). i thought he did a good job backing up RH for the most part, but would also have to agree that RH did more to back up GLP in the way of playing than he did singing. not to say that they weren't great together - au contraire! they have a great stage chemistry and obviously had a lot of fun together. GLP does a great RH impression, and RH does a truly inspired Bowie impression that had everyone rolling and cheering. i was also thrilled to death to hear "Gene Hackman", as i have never heard it in any form other than the way it appears on _Jewels for Sophia_ and last night's version had some extra lines. that song always makes me laugh. the friend i brought with me was familiar with some RH stuff (but is by no means a big fan) and, like me, didn't know GLP at all. he came with me because i didn't want to go alone (my husband and i have some very different musical tastes), and afterwards, thanked me profusely for bringing him along - he was very impressed with both RH and GLP. all around a great show! anyway, enough rambling for my first post. :) again, whoever you are, thanks for talking to me last night - i hope to hear more about the recording and where i might find it or trade for it. :) - - Eclipse (hoping she hasn't put her foot in her mouth on her first post) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 13:00:43 -0700 From: Glen Uber Subject: Directions to the Sweetwater For those of you going to the Mill Valley show, here's how you get there: *From San Francisco, go north on Hwy 101 across the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin County. As for "accuracy," I seem to recall "Sound and Vision" consistently botching an important chord change. However, I did like "Sound and Vision" all right, mostly because it's an uncommonly covered Bowie tune. Also, because there wasn't all that much song to "trash" -- the original was more about production quirks than actual songwriting. By the way, "Sound and Vision" squeezed in quotes from a couple of other songs...um, one of them was that old disco tune "Rock Me, Baby." Looks like I'm seeing the Eels on Sunday.
