Now, Sayer was over on Wednesday and he says that he gets ALL of the material for his radio show from Napster and gets calls every week from people thinking he just has the most amazing record collection of rarities and hard-to-find tunes. He also said Napster has increased the breadth (is that right?) of his musical tastes, but has also made him more selective in artists. He collects very old country music and does a great job with Napster. Just sharing someone else's experience. And I will try to iron things out with Eddie ... But here is the deal. There was a bunch of money I had - then didn't have. All my money for the month of June disappeared. Also, I'm low on blood - no way! you say ... And, I fell in the middle of an intersection here in Portland, luckily my guardian angel Carole was there to help me, but the event yielded scratches and bruises. So, I used a heating pad on the particularly painful spots. I must have fallen asleep - do not try this at home boys and girls! - and woke up with second degree burns on my tummy. Somehow the heating pad had slipped in a very odd way as I slept. So, at Carole and Natalie's prodding and gentle {? : } insistence, I went to the hospital. The doctor was less than amused, as was I. Second degree burns from a heating pad! that's just craziness ... I'm on antibiotics, and I have to change the wound dressing twice a day ... aren't I just the girl who has never ending fun ; ) So, I may just ride with Eddie to My Unka Nick's house and see the Mill Valley Show and the SanFran show .... instead of making it all the way to L.A. oh ... I'm not allowed to drive ... I should mention that extra crunchy goodness fact ; ) However, I feel terrible because I had promised myself I'd meet all the L.A. fegs. The doctor said "no way are you spending all that time in a car - unless you want to get an even worse infection" ... so I don't think I "can " go to L.A. Unless someone has a brilliant idea ... I feel so bad! I'm so sorry! I suck!!!! But any help, suggestions, declarations of "we don't hate you Randi" would really help. On the way to the doctor again now ... the burn has to be checked every three days. I really suck!!!! I haven't. The new Juliana Hatfield albums are conveniently divided up into the two types of songs that she seems to like to do, IMHO. Choose your poison. The one by Juliana Hatfield has a lot of quiet pop songs. The one by Juliana's Pony has a lot of noisy songs with feedback and profanity and stuff. I bought the box set which includes a bonus Police cover tune and some multimedia. It was what I expected. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to the uninitiated. I am happy that her label is letting her do what she wants. I am not happy that people in Japan get bonus tracks. Regarding cover tunes, I don't know how this fits into this discussion, but doesn't the song have to have been released in the US for you to release it? It is my understanding that the album Original Sin by Pandora's Box was not released in the US in order for the producer, Jim Steinman, to be able to control who could release the songs stateside, i.e. Celine Dion and not Meat Loaf. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 15:46:19 PDT From: "The Kielbasa Kid" Subject: Re: Randi & Mill Valley as stated last week, i've got l.a. and mill valley covered, and the tomster has the rest. OK. In about seven hours, Viv and I embark on our little... um... vacation. The plan is more or less what I spilled a week ago, so I won't bore anyone with more detail. Magritte at SFMOMA is a must for me on this trip, so that'll be worked in. Mark, expect us Sunday or Monday. We'll call several times from Shasta to San Francisco, so you'll be plenty forewarned. If you're not going to be around, Viv and I can work something else out. That's not a problem... but we do want to see you and Viv wants to meet your cats. Nick, I just got a new digital camera today. It's not the fanciest on the market, but the image quality's pretty darned good and it's supported by GNU software, so I'm pleased. I suspect there'll be fegfotos aplenty. Viv and I are going to Ashland, SF, Santa Cruz (Aptos), and maybe someplace else. If you want to meet up, you know where to find us. (Oh, and we're on the bay area list, too, so that might be more convenient.) I'll be carrying my pager the whole time. Go ahead and send text messages to pager@bitmine.net or numbers to 800.537.7858. This is a change from my last trip to SF, so if you think you have that info, you don't. And man o man, my pager number is listed in the AT&T Toll Free directory as belonging to a balloon company in Peurto Rico. I get some of the strangest pages. See some of you in a few days. Byeee. Je. I just looked up "Bremsweg" and my Langenscheidt gives "stopping distance" as translation. However, that does not necessarily mean that that expression is in common use. What do you think? > Is it true what we used to joke about when determining whether > a user interface could be translated -- that there are also thirteen- > syllable German words for eight-letter English words? I can't name one offhand, but the tendency is certainly there. I think that every language has neat words that express a concept in a very concise fashion. Those words are usually the ones that end up as borrowed words in other languages, e.g. the German Weltschmerz or Kindergarten. But if you do a comparison between languages, you'll find that English is about the "shortest" language there is. Take any novel and compare the English, the German and the French version and you'll find that the English one has the fewest letters, followed by German and the French. Things might look a little different if you were to count syllables instead of letters, because French has so many silent letters in its orthography... > No. It's as weird for me not to know how to ride a bike as it is for > my girlfriend not to know how to drive. "Praxis", for any of you who by the merest chance aren't well-versed on the history of East-European communism, was a Yugoslav philosophical journal first published in 1964. But it could also (loosely) be described as an "ideological collective," whose basic schtick was "humanist Marxism," communism without totalitarianism, etc... Dissident stuff, you might say. In some respects, it actually *was* the most landmark ideological collective since the United Nations, though IMO that isn't saying much. As Eddie would tell you, the Little Rascals had better TV ratings than the UN and Praxis combined, so their ideas (such as the ethical imperative expressed in the line, "It weren't right to steal that nickel from Alfalfa's lemonade stand, Spanky") probably had much more impact, at least in the West. I guess it depends on how you define "landmark." (The word "Praxis" is actually a Latin-derived term meaning "practical application of learning," or something to that effect. Not in common usage, but hey, I'm sure somebody would point that out if I didn't.) So this is what I'm wondering: Is it possible, Eb, that the bio to which you're referring actually referred to the *Yugoslav* Praxis in some way? Or maybe it's a parody? I'm just curious, I suppose. (How old is/was this record?) Here's my anecdote about band bios: The only one I ever wrote for my own band basically stated, "our goal as a band is to get famous and wealthy, so that we can use our fame to set a bad example for children and blow our enormous gobs of money on wasteful luxury items and suicidal cocaine habits." From that, we got an entire page in Washington's City Paper (this was 1983), and the best review we ever received from anybody, for a *cassette album*! (Not even a particularly good one!) That could be taken to mean that the press appreciates it when you tell them the truth, except that I never did use cocaine. OTOH, I'm hardly a good example for children, and I did just buy a DVD player. Which reminds me: "Storefront Hitchcock" and "Yellow Submarine" are fine reasons for buying DVD players, but to me, the real purpose of DVD is to be able to instantaneously skip to *precisely* the Monty Python bit one is seeking, whenever one durn well pleases. Well, there's the most obvious answer, which coincidentally can be derived by throwing Praxis and the Little Rascals in a conceptual blender: Fat Albert & the Cosby Kids. Now there was a band throwin' down some heady shit. (The Praxis album came out in 1992, JH3. I can't speak about the specifics of the bio, because I don't remember them. I just recall that I was laughing out loud at how ridiculously pompous the text was.
