Is this unique word count or total word count? > Is there where someone tabulates the corresponding Robyn list? ;) Well, I have all of the songs in text files and, in order to speed up the search database, wrote a program that makes a list of all the unique words more than two letters long. There are 5419 distinct words in Robyn's songwriting vocabulary (minus the few unique words in the few songs that aren't in my lyric collection). Because of the nature of the data, I can give you the actual word count or the unique word count of any song with one command. For example, My Wife and My Dead Wife contains 116 unique words out of 319 words total (this includes the title and any Ohs and Ahs, unfortunately). The highest word count? Hmm. Lemme write a very long command line. So Do The Chisel is shortest, with 17 words (counting the title and the Oooh at the end). And Happy The Golden Prince is the longest at 834. As for the most unique words, well, I don't know right now. Let me sleep. I would assume the answer to both questions would be "yes." The person who posted the list talked about using MS Word's word-count function, so I don't think he worried about repetition (and why should he?). Maybe I'm jaded but it's hard to find any credibility in a show that passes itself off as a documentary when it includes interviews with people who have never met the subject and punctuates them with "recreated" scenes using lookalike actors. Still, out of curiosity and respect for a fellow feg's passion I will make an effort to watch some of this show on June 11 between innings if there is a good game on that day. > Eb, mildly disappointed that he wasn't recruited to offer banal soundbites > as one of E!'s featured interviews :) Not only is this disappointing, it's almost surprising! > So, which is the most disappointing, the new Sonic Youth, XTC or King > Crimson album? There are a some strong tracks, some weak tracks and a lot of dumb tracks but they're all pretty fun. I *was* hoping for something a little more profound from them though, so in that sense I guess it still rates as a disappointment, but I'm getting plenty of enjoyment out of it so I've stopped complaining. - -rUss ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jun 2000 13:11:02 EDT From: BLATZMAN@aol.com Subject: Alright, Yeah, I forgot I forgot to be totally specific when I said Alright Yeah didn't make it to the album it was written for. I just assumed that everyone knew what I was talking about. I assumed every person on this list has heard the far superior Leckie-produced version that was relegated to B-side status from the Respect sessions. I'm sure most of us know about this tune, but if you haven't heard it, I beg you, find it!!!! It is soooo wonderful. And this fact actually only cheapens Moss for me. Who wants to hear 2 new versions of a song from the previous album? May I suggest 3 Britpop survivors from the 80's who are still going strong? Nick Heyward turned his amp up to 11 a few years ago, and he ROCKS!!!! And Roddy Frame from Aztec Camera put out a solo album last year called The North Star that is just loaded with great songs. And finally, Terry Hall, still churning out the "shouldabeen hits" If you haven't heard Terry Hall's album "HOME", let me give you this info: Andy Partridge co-writes 2 songs(better than anything on AV1&2) Nick Heyard Co-Writes 2 songs Ian Broudie (lightning Seeds) Co-writes & produces Chris Sharrock from Icicle Works drums Les Pattinson from the Bunnymen plays Bass Craig Gannon from all over the place plays guitars. It's a freakin supergroup of 80's pop stars and it is GREAT!!!!!!! I have two pet peeves about "E! True Hollywood Story": 1) The show is *obsessed* with age. Count how many times during an episode the narrator tells you the subject's age. "And for the 23-year-old actor...." "After returning from Paris, 26-year-old Soupy Sales stayed in Boise...." It's awkwardly slipped in *everywhere*. And when someone gets married, it's "For the 38-year-old Gwynne and the 23-year-old Twiggy...." Sheeeeesh. 2) It's conspicuously geared toward idiot channel-surfers with no attention span. Before every break, they waste a minute telling you what's coming up, and after every break, they waste another minute telling you what just happened. I figure about seven or eight minutes of every hour is pure dross. >Still, out of curiosity and respect for a fellow feg's passion I will make >an effort to watch some of this show on June 11 between innings if there is >a good game on that day. Testify, brother. They're not bad songs, they just don't have any sort of twist to them that makes them special. And I really wish he'd abandon that mid-tempo 4/4 "Penny Lane" shuffle he's been using forever. I said earlier that Dave Gregory was missed, but I couldn't really put a finger on why. But I realized it's because a lot of XTC's musical appeal (at least with their guitar-based material) was based around the complex interplay between the two guitarists; with one guitarist missing, the music feels thin and threadbare. "Wasp Star" makes me sad, because it makes me think that my heroes may be losing their touch. "Jewels for Sophia" makes me sad for the same reason. Since "Apple Venus" and "Moss Elixir" were both really good, I'm hoping that these disappointing records are just glitches rather than signifiers of a genuine decline. But somehow I doubt it. :((( gnat "help me get through these cynical days" the gnatster p.s. More info on Great Lakes, please. REUTERS -- Olympic Gold Medalist Edwin Moses died Sunday at his home in Marina del Rey, following a massive brain haemorrhage. Mr. Moses first gained notoriety at the tender age of 15, performing spectacular feats of derring-do on a dirtbike he had built himself using parts obtained from the town dump. But it was not for long, the life of the daredevil. The man-child once labelled "utterly fearless" by an awe-struck Walter Cronkite felt the beck and call of the Track and of the Field. "I got out of it before I completely mangled myself," Moses recalled in 1997, referring to his upstart career as a very real contender for Evel Kneivel's unholy throne. But there was no looking back for the star whose light would eventually shine brighter than a million suns. Moses dominated the 400-meter hurdles for much of the rest of the 20th Century, winning two Olympic gold medals, and one bronze before finally hanging up his running shoes in 1988. Were it not for the unfortunate decision of then-President Jimmy Carter (fresh off his encounter with the "giant swimming rabbit") to boycott the 1980 Moscow Olympiad, Moses would surely have struck gold in the USSR as well. For, while none thought it coneivable that it would last fully seven more years, Moses was at the time in the midst of the most remarkable feat in Track and Field history -- he did not lose a single race from 1977 through 1987, winning an astounding 122 races in a row. Not since Joe Dimaggio had whacked out a basehit in an unthinkable 56 consecutive games had American sport witnessed such a transcendent steak. But Moses, commenting on Carter's decision in 1986, insisted that he had "no regrets" for having been forced to abort his preparations for the 1980 Games at their most crucial moment; and that he held "no animosity" for the ex-peanut farmer from Georgia -- a stance which incited Jim McKay to remark that, "Of all the Olympic champions, Edwin Moses was the most easygoing." A source close to Mr. Moses assures Reuters that, "He will be missed." Moses was 45. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V9 #140 *******************************
